Up for Auction Santo Domingo Melon Shell and Turquoise Necklace In the 1960's and 70's my parents had an"Indian Jewelry" store in Arizona. They made several trips a year to the artisan's reservation to purchase jewelry for their store. On several of these trips I was able to accompany them and make purchases direct from the artists. This necklace is one of the pieces from my trip. I do not remember the artist. But remember well the experience of going onto the Santo Domingo Reservation. This stunning necklace is hand rolled to make the graduated beads of melon shell and turquoise. It closes with a simple hook and eye and is strung with a strong string most likely made of gut. The necklace is 21 inches long with the beads graduating from 1/4 of an inch at the ends and up to 1/2 an inch at the widest part at the center ... moreof the piece. There is no damage anywhere on this necklace. It makes a wonderful accessory and can be worn with multiple other necklaces. A great addition for any collector or person admiring the Indian arts. This gorgeous seafoam sea foam turquoise nugget necklace is strung with sparkling crystal and silver beads. The nuggets are polished and each one is unique and unusual. Measuring just slightly under 20 inches long with a nice solid hook clasp. The nuggets vary in size up to one inch. It is strung a little tight but still lays nicely right on my collar bone. Up for auction is a unsigned poloychrome Pueblo Indian Pot. I think it is from Santo Domingo Pueblo. One of their heavy. Hand coiled, style pots with the a painted spirit opening on the rim.It measures about 8.25 inches across and is about 3.5" deep. It has stains on the inside with a few very small paint flakes on the surface, no cracks.see phots) It is out of an Albuquerque auction. I think it was displayed and not used and it is not an older one but made in that style because it feels modern, post 1990 I think. So don't be fooled if you compare it to picture books. Antique Santo or Bulto San Francisco (St. Francis), Hand Carved
Antique Santo or Bulto San Francisco(St. Francis) Hand Carved Antique Santo or Bulto San Francisco(Saint Francis) Circa 1800s- early 1900s. Possibly older. Santos are Spanish colonial folk art saints. Bultos are Santos"in the round" I.e. carved from three dimensional cottonwood roots, pine wood, etc. Although today they are commonly defined as being from New Mexico, where they are still made, the art form originated in Spain and hence spread to all of their past colonies(where these older pieces are no longer as common) Provenance: This San Francisco is most probably from Guatemala; the elderly gentleman collector I purchased him from says that is where he purchased this piece a couple decades ago. He is executed in the traditional manner: hand carved wood with pegged together arms/appendages. Pegged onto a stand; covered in gesso, ... morehand painted, and varnished(probably with pine sap) San Francisco appears to have been pegged at the waist also(quite common) The waist joint is barely visible and still very tight. Condition: He shows the very typical wear and tear of age: rubbing off and/or chipping of the paint and gesso. Some crazing/crackling, minor cracking at some peg joints, etc. There does appear to be some white colored glue between the pegged hands and arms. Whether it is original or not I do not know, but it appears to be a more recent repair. He appears far older or much more used/touched or weathered than my San Pedro listing from the same collection, as much of his paint and gesso are worn down to the dark wood underneath. Size: The full statue measures 11 ½ in high by 4 in wide. San Francisco's body measures 9 ½ in. high(from robe bottom to top of head) by 3 in wide(from hand to hand) The base measures 3 7/8 in. long by 3 in wide by 2 in. tall. In the tradition of the Santo Domingo Depression-era"battery bird" necklaces. Mary Tafoya has shown herself to be the most skilled and creative of the new Santo Domingo jewelry artists. Her work is done using old-style techniques and materials(but with a modern twist) and her designs are original, creative and unique. As a child. Mary Tafoya learned to make jewelry by helping her parents, Frank and Anita Coriz, make the“Depression” necklaces that came out of Santo Domingo Pueblo. These folk art pieces, which substituted turquoise chips, battery casings, gypsum beads and colored materials such as plastic for the more expensive silver, coral and turquoise nuggets, were an affordable way for the artists at Santo Domingo to earn some kind of living during very difficult times. Recent scholarship, including a show at the Wheelwright ... moreMuseum in Santa Fe, have highlighted the cultural, economic and artistic importance of this type of work, and the older"Depression" necklaces have become extremely collectible. Of all the artists still working in the Santo Domingo mosaic style. Mary Tafoya is without a doubt the one producing the most interesting pieces. She cuts and arranges materials to form a colorful design on her jewelry using natural items including turquoise, coral, shell and pipestone. Once designed, Mary then uses a mixture of jet to bind the pieces to a foundation that is set on a serpentine base. This pin/pendant is strung on a strand of turquoise beads that is 17 1/8" in length. But the pin/pendant can be worn just as easily by itself. It measures 1 5/8" x 2 1/8" and weighs 19 grams. Worn and treasured as not only adornment, protection of good health, but also as portable wealth. Not having ready access to banks, or cash money, this jewelry would often serve as the family"reserve" or"emergency" fund. Excuse the reflections of my blue camera. This i s an old Native American Santo Domingo Pueblo Kewa sterling silver bolo tie with turquoise and mother of pearl triangle stones. The bolo has the hallmark for Sam Lovato. S conjoined with an arrow. The deceased Sam Lovato is mentioned in Hallmarks of the Southwest by Wright and The Little Book of Marks on Southwestern Silver by Hougart. The bolo tie weighs 40 grams with the old balck leather bolo strap. One of the silver tips is slightly bent right before the bead and I show a close up of that. I don't think it is noticeable but you could straighten it or replace it with different sterling tips if you prefer. I have not cleaned ... morethis so there is a tarnished patina that you could polish shiny if you prefer. The bolo measures 2 1/8" x 1 5/8" and the tips measures 2 1/2" long. A rthur& Hilda Coriz are both prize winning. Full blooded Native American Indians from the Santo Domingo Pueblo. Arthur was born in 1948 and deceased in winter of 1998. Hilda was born in 1949 and currently making pottery on her own. Arthur was a self taught artist. He observed his brother-in-law, Robert Tenorio and became inspired to learn the long lived tradition of working with clay. Hilda was coaxed by her brother, Robert Tenorio in the 1980’s to learn the art of working with clay. Continuing the traditions of their people are extremely important to them, and by working with clay they add to the long lived legacy of their people. This incredible bowl was purchased thru a estate sale in Santa Fe, This bowl was kept in a case. The bowl stands 14" tall and is 20" at its widest point. They specialize in handmade. Hand painted ... moretraditional Santo Domingo pottery. They gather natural clays and other pigments from within the Santo Domingo Pueblo. They hand clean the clay, mix all the materials with water, and begin hand forming the pottery using the coiling method. When the product has been completed they set it out to dry. Once the pottery is dry they sand the finished product, they hand paint many different designs of birds, animals, flowers, and geometric designs with natural paints which they boil from pigments like spinach plant and honey bee wax. Finally, they fire their pottery the traditional way, outdoors. They sign their pottery as: Arthur& Hilda Coriz, followed by a hand etched pot. Spanish Shipwrecks in 1554: The Wreck of the 300” On April 9. 1554, a Spanish convoy set sail from the Veracruz, Mexico, port of San Juan de Ulua, on their homebound voyage to Spain, where anxious merchants awaited the treasury on board. The fleet included four ships—the San Andrés, San Esteban,Espíritu Santo, and Santa María de Yciar—and carried more than 400 people. Among them were prisoners, old conquistadors, merchants, and wealthy citizens returning home to Spain. En route the convoy was to stop off in La Havana, Cuba. Of the four ships, only the San Andrés was to reach Havana. The remainder met a disastrous fate off the Texas coast. The story of the shipwrecks and the harrowing trials of the survivors provides one of the earliest and most interesting accounts in Texas history. Santo Domingo bowl by Monica Silva c. 1920-1930's 13" H x 10" A(30" circumference at largest part) Monica Silva was born at Santa Clara Pueblo around 1900. She married Santiago Lovato of Santo Domingo and moved to his pueblo. She is considered one of the best potters at Santo Domingo in the early 1900s. Her work is distinctive and this large jar has one of the notable characteristics seen on her work. A ceremonial break on the rim. This was told to me by a 90 year-old family member from the Malibu Estate where their collection was housed after moving it from their vacation home of 50 years on the AZ/NM border.
