Up for Auction Santo Domingo Melon Shell and Turquoise Necklace In the 1960's and 70's my parents had an"Indian Jewelry" store in Arizona. They made several trips a year to the artisan's reservation to purchase jewelry for their store. On several of these trips I was able to accompany them and make purchases direct from the artists. This necklace is one of the pieces from my trip. I do not remember the artist. But remember well the experience of going onto the Santo Domingo Reservation. This stunning necklace is hand rolled to make the graduated beads of melon shell and turquoise. It closes with a simple hook and eye and is strung with a strong string most likely made of gut. The necklace is 21 inches long with the beads graduating from 1/4 of an inch at the ends and up to 1/2 an inch at the widest part at the center ... moreof the piece. There is no damage anywhere on this necklace. It makes a wonderful accessory and can be worn with multiple other necklaces. A great addition for any collector or person admiring the Indian arts. If you would like any other information. Please feel free to contact me. Thanks for looking.
This gorgeous seafoam sea foam turquoise nugget necklace is strung with sparkling crystal and silver beads. The nuggets are polished and each one is unique and unusual. Measuring just slightly under 20 inches long with a nice solid hook clasp. The nuggets vary in size up to one inch. It is strung a little tight but still lays nicely right on my collar bone. A perfect length for summer frocks. Have fun bidding and be sure to keep watching for more wonderful summer turquoise items from fine California estates.

Up for auction is a unsigned poloychrome Pueblo Indian Pot. I think it is from Santo Domingo Pueblo. One of their heavy. Hand coiled, style pots with the a painted spirit opening on the rim.It measures about 8.25 inches across and is about 3.5" deep. It has stains on the inside with a few very small paint flakes on the surface, no cracks.see phots) It is out of an Albuquerque auction. I think it was displayed and not used and it is not an older one but made in that style because it feels modern, post 1990 I think. So don't be fooled if you compare it to picture books. Thanks for looking.

Treasure Roads Serving customer since 2003 14 day no hassle returns- 1 day handling time- 100% satisfaction guarantee Julian Lovato Sterling Silver Zia Symbol Pin Brooch Born 1925. active starting 1930's. The Pin measures 1 1/4" in diameter. The pin clasp on the back is strong and works. The Artisan Julian Lavoto worked under Frank Patania in the Thunderbird Shop. His Tribal Affiliation is Kewa Pueblo. The pin features the sacred Zia symbol. Often seen(and controversial) as a symbol of New Mexico, is overlaid on the Pin face. The letters(acronym) is SFTC. An engraving inside the Zia is the number 100. I am getting questions regarding the acronym. We have no certainty. But most agreement is that SF stands for Santa Fe. The Santa Fe trail is over 100 years old, and has organizations that use Trail Center and Council. Council is used ... moreby the BSA, and Center is used by a Museum at the head of the trail, where Julian once lived. In addition to Trail, we researched Tribal Council. While we could not find a Santa Fe organization that matched the name, only meetings from Tribal Councils in Santa Fe. I will add more info if I receive it, and info is most welcome. The pin makers mark is J. Lavato and the left facing eagle mark which was used by Frank Patania. Julian's teacher in silversmith work and given to Julian to use by Frank Patania. His signature is well stamped on the back side. Condition as seen, no cleaning performed.

Antique Santo or Bulto San Francisco(St. Francis) Hand Carved Antique Santo or Bulto San Francisco(Saint Francis) Circa 1800s- early 1900s. Possibly older. Santos are Spanish colonial folk art saints. Bultos are Santos"in the round" I.e. carved from three dimensional cottonwood roots, pine wood, etc. Although today they are commonly defined as being from New Mexico, where they are still made, the art form originated in Spain and hence spread to all of their past colonies(where these older pieces are no longer as common) Provenance: This San Francisco is most probably from Guatemala; the elderly gentleman collector I purchased him from says that is where he purchased this piece a couple decades ago. He is executed in the traditional manner: hand carved wood with pegged together arms/appendages. Pegged onto a stand; covered in gesso, ... morehand painted, and varnished(probably with pine sap) San Francisco appears to have been pegged at the waist also(quite common) The waist joint is barely visible and still very tight. Condition: He shows the very typical wear and tear of age: rubbing off and/or chipping of the paint and gesso. Some crazing/crackling, minor cracking at some peg joints, etc. There does appear to be some white colored glue between the pegged hands and arms. Whether it is original or not I do not know, but it appears to be a more recent repair. He appears far older or much more used/touched or weathered than my San Pedro listing from the same collection, as much of his paint and gesso are worn down to the dark wood underneath. Size: The full statue measures 11 ½ in high by 4 in wide. San Francisco's body measures 9 ½ in. high(from robe bottom to top of head) by 3 in wide(from hand to hand) The base measures 3 7/8 in. long by 3 in wide by 2 in. tall. We pack all items with lots of care. However. We highly recommend adding insurance to your shipment in case an item is damaged or lost in transit. Please let us know if you want this before you pay so we can let you know how much it will c

Both are 3/8 inch wide and have some flexibility to adjust. No markings, as is common with older Southwest Native American Indian silver. Probably from the Santo Domingo Pueblo. This is a wonderful early figure of the infant Jesus or Christ child. 18th century or early 19th century. It is hand-carved and polychrome painted with great detail to the face. Parts of the fingers are missing along with the backs of the ears. There is some damage to the top and back of the head. Both feet have been nicely repaired a long time ago. There is some chipping to the polychrome but there is great natural patina. Measures 16 1/2 inches long and 5 3/4 inches wide. In as found condition. Powered by The free listing tool. In the tradition of the Santo Domingo Depression-era"battery bird" necklaces. Mary Tafoya has shown herself to be the most skilled and creative of the new Santo Domingo jewelry artists. Her work is done using old-style techniques and materials(but with a modern twist) and her designs are original, creative and unique. As a child. Mary Tafoya learned to make jewelry by helping her parents, Frank and Anita Coriz, make the“Depression” necklaces that came out of Santo Domingo Pueblo. These folk art pieces, which substituted turquoise chips, battery casings, gypsum beads and colored materials such as plastic for the more expensive silver, coral and turquoise nuggets, were an affordable way for the artists at Santo Domingo to earn some kind of living during very difficult times. Recent scholarship, including a show at the Wheelwright ... moreMuseum in Santa Fe, have highlighted the cultural, economic and artistic importance of this type of work, and the older"Depression" necklaces have become extremely collectible. Of all the artists still working in the Santo Domingo mosaic style. Mary Tafoya is without a doubt the one producing the most interesting pieces. She cuts and arranges materials to form a colorful design on her jewelry using natural items including turquoise, coral, shell and pipestone. Once designed, Mary then uses a mixture of jet to bind the pieces to a foundation that is set on a serpentine base. This pin/pendant is strung on a strand of turquoise beads that is 17 1/8" in length. But the pin/pendant can be worn just as easily by itself. It measures 1 5/8" x 2 1/8" and weighs 19 grams. Hallmarked with her butterfly and MLT on the back-see photos. Winning bidder to pay $10 for shipping by USPS Priority Mail within the continental US. More elsewhere.
Massive 33" Tony Aguilar Santo Domingo necklace. Piece includes a large variety of stone including turquoise. Shell, coral and jet. There are four tooled bradd beads, two large barrels(1 1/8 x1" two tooled brass disks( 1 1/8 x 1/2" tooled brass cones(1 1/2" long) and six round untooled brass beads. Closure is hook and eye. This piece bears the artist's mark on the cones. I have the original tag stating he is the artist with the original price of $900. About the artist- Tony Aguilar's life certainly influenced his jewelry. He was born in 1919 at. From a family of jewelers including his own father and his uncle. Vidal Aragon, Tony Aguilar learned silversmithing from a Navajo jeweler while he attended the. The president of his class at the Indian School. Tony entered the United States Army during World War II. For ... more2 1/2 years, Tony Aguilar was stationed in Iran, and while there he admired the heavy, ornate jewelry designs of Middle Eastern jewelry. Tony would return to the United States highly influenced by those jewelry designs. The resulting jewelry that Tony Aguilar created post World War II was often bold, big and brass with intricate stampwork and large natural turquoise stones. Tony's frequent use of brass was quite exceptional, for brass is actually very difficult to work with and very few jewelers can create brass jewelry that does the metal any justice. Tony Aguilar was one of the few who could. His brass work is some of the best around!

Gorgeous 4-strand Santo Domingo heishi beads. The necklace is 30" long and the tiny shell beads are strung on thread; tied off on the top. The colors are clam. white) pipestone? browns) and turquoise. This is an older strand that I picked up at an estate auction. This is so eloquent and easy to wear and a great way to highlight your turquoise pendants.
This Santo Domingo necklace has about 23.5" of beads on 5 strands. No clasps. Just the old style tied off carpet thread making this necklace hang with a length of about 33" You can use as is, reset the knot, or add sterling ends. The red beads on first glance look like coral but they may be a red glass trade bead. The dark brown scattered beads look like pin shell. As found from an Albuquerque estate. It is used and in excellent condition. No Reserve. Shipping includes insurance. Thanks for looking.

Throughout our Indian lands the trading posts serve also as pawn shops with the trader usually involved in an earthy form of banking business- part of the process known as pawning. Most Hopi. Zuni and Navajo reservation Indians(The BIG Three) and many other Traders converted their turquoise and silver jewelry into cash. When in need of money or commodities their assets are used as securities for loans. At times the trading post vault is the safest place in which to keep valuables. In this case the Native American pawns their items for a minimum loan of cash and is happy to pay the interest rate in return for the security of his goods. Up for auction is a vintage old pawn Santo Domingo natural Turquoise chunk heshe necklace! Old Pawn Native American Jewelry refers to the pieces that were made. Worn and treasured as not only adornment, protection of good health, but also as portable wealth. Not having ready access to banks, or cash money, this jewelry would often serve as the family"reserve" or"emergency" fund. In times of need, this silver and turquoise jewelry could be easily used as security with an authorized trader(pawned) for cash to meet the current crisis. Then, when the crops came in, or the sheep were shorn, the jewelry could be redeemed and take its place back in the family. Unfortunately on occasions this jewelry would not be redeemed as planned. The lender would keep it for the agreed amount of time. And if the loan was not paid off by the ... moreagreed date, the Pawn Shop, or Trader would be authorized to sell the jewelry. Often, when the elders of the family die, their items are pawned and the money is divided among the family members. The necklace measures 24-1/2" length, and weighs 42.8g. Authentic natural turquoise and coconut shell beads make up this beautiful and timeless piece. The necklace pictured is the one you will receive. Thank you for looking and good luck bidding! Welcome! Fabulous Santo Domingo necklace inlaid onto shell and bovine bone using vinyl and plastic black and white and also turquoise. The inlaid turquoise matches the three heavy strands of turquoise on which the necklace is strung. Gorgeous and in great vintage condition. With no problems. The turquoise strands are about 17" long without the braided cord that extends the length, and the bale is huge, also inlaid to match with abalone shell added. Stunning. The pendant alone without the bale is 3-1/2" long and with the bale is 5-1/2" long. 3-1/8" wide. The turquoise chunks are smoothly buffed and very comfortable to wear, all different sizes up to or averaging about 1/2" long. Great necklace for your collection and to enjoy. Just gorgeous! A rthur& Hilda Coriz are both prize winning. Full blooded Native American Indians from the Santo Domingo Pueblo. Arthur was born in 1948 and deceased in winter of 1998. Hilda was born in 1949 and currently making pottery on her own. Arthur was a self taught artist. He observed his brother-in-law, Robert Tenorio and became inspired to learn the long lived tradition of working with clay. Hilda was coaxed by her brother, Robert Tenorio in the 1980’s to learn the art of working with clay. Continuing the traditions of their people are extremely important to them, and by working with clay they add to the long lived legacy of their people. This incredible bowl was purchased thru a estate sale in Santa Fe, This bowl was kept in a case. The bowl stands 14" tall and is 20" at its widest point. They specialize in handmade. Hand painted ... moretraditional Santo Domingo pottery. They gather natural clays and other pigments from within the Santo Domingo Pueblo. They hand clean the clay, mix all the materials with water, and begin hand forming the pottery using the coiling method. When the product has been completed they set it out to dry. Once the pottery is dry they sand the finished product, they hand paint many different designs of birds, animals, flowers, and geometric designs with natural paints which they boil from pigments like spinach plant and honey bee wax. Finally, they fire their pottery the traditional way, outdoors. They sign their pottery as: Arthur& Hilda Coriz, followed by a hand etched pot. Paulita Pacheco(sister) Gilbert Pacheco(brother-in-law) Ione Coriz(daughter) Andrew Pacheco(nephew) Juanita Tenorio(mother) and Andrea Ortiz(grandmother) are among some of the artists they are related to. Spanish Shipwrecks in 1554: The Wreck of the 300” On April 9. 1554, a Spanish convoy set sail from the Veracruz, Mexico, port of San Juan de Ulua, on their homebound voyage to Spain, where anxious merchants awaited the treasury on board. The fleet included four ships—the San Andrés, San Esteban,Espíritu Santo, and Santa María de Yciar—and carried more than 400 people. Among them were prisoners, old conquistadors, merchants, and wealthy citizens returning home to Spain. En route the convoy was to stop off in La Havana, Cuba. Of the four ships, only the San Andrés was to reach Havana. The remainder met a disastrous fate off the Texas coast. The story of the shipwrecks and the harrowing trials of the survivors provides one of the earliest and most interesting accounts in Texas history. The convoy was halfway to Havana on ... moreApril 29, 1554, when a storm hit. San Esteban, Espíritu Santo, andSanta María de Yciar were swept off course and ran aground on the sandbars off Padre Island, about 50 miles south of Corpus Christi Bay. More than 300 people died during the tragic event, which has become known as“The Wreck of the Three Hundred. The three ships wrecked within 2½ miles of each other, and it is believed that their crews and passengers banded together for comfort and safety. Master of San Esteban, Francisco del Huerto, salvaged a boat and sailed for Veracruz with a few seamen. Other survivors from the ship started walking southward, believing a Spanish outpost was within only a few days walk. Their assumption proved wrong. Of this group, only a few were to make it to Tampico, which was actually 300 miles away. Local Karankawa Indians picked off the survivors during their torturous journey. At first, the natives offered some of the injured survivors fish to eat. Once at the campsite, they attacked them. Other Spaniards stripped off their garments along the trail, thinking the Indians wanted their clothing. Without even that meager protection, the group faced even greater hardships—mosqui
Santo Domingo bowl by Monica Silva c. 1920-1930's 13" H x 10" A(30" circumference at largest part) Monica Silva was born at Santa Clara Pueblo around 1900. She married Santiago Lovato of Santo Domingo and moved to his pueblo. She is considered one of the best potters at Santo Domingo in the early 1900s. Her work is distinctive and this large jar has one of the notable characteristics seen on her work. A ceremonial break on the rim. This was told to me by a 90 year-old family member from the Malibu Estate where their collection was housed after moving it from their vacation home of 50 years on the AZ/NM border. She was an art student, and studied Native American art and pottery. This is a very old pot, estimated to be around 80-85 years old. The photos accurately depict the condition of the jar.
