Hi. This is a relic/reliquary containing an Agnus Dei. And it has also been touched to the True Cross of our Lord Jesus Christ. It measures 1" X 3/4" One side has the words AGNUS DEI, and the other, in French, TOUCHE A LA VRAI CROIX, or Touched to the True Cross. After Vatican 2, NO NEW AGNUS DEIS HAVE BEEN CONCECRATED. This is a shame, as the Agnus Dei is a powerful SACRAMENTAL, in the same category as holy water and blessed palms. The history of the Agnus Dei: Agnus Dei means Lamb of God. And is the name given to certain wax discs upon which are impressed the figure of a lamb, and the blessing of which, actually a consecration, is reserved to the reigning Supreme Pontiff. A wonderful genuine ancient Byzantine. Cast bronze cross pendant. Bearing Christ crucified to one side and Christ risen to the other, both top and bottom are hinged and it encloses an internal reliquary compartment. Probably a metal detector find, it dates from the 6th-7th century AD, it's in very good condition for its age, with light wear, encrusted dirt and one lower hinge clip missing. It weighs 45 grams and measures 3 ¼ x 1 ¾ inches overall. The final photo shows it with a US penny(1 cent) coin for scale. Which measures 19 mm/ ¾ of an inch diameter. Vintage 925 Cross Locket with Italy Rope Chain Offered for your consideration is this nice vintage sterling silver cross locket with a sterling rope chain. The locket is stamped"925" on the back with a 3 character mark I can not make out- the chain is stamped"ITALY 925" see photos) The locket measures 1 1/16" tall(including the bale) x 3/4" wide x 5/32" thick- the chain is 18" in total length- total weight is 9.5 grams. The locket hinge and both clasps work fine. These items are in excellent vintage condition but are pre-owned and as such shows some light signs of use commensurate with age. Nothing unsightly. The reliquary is for Joseph. The Virgin Mary, and the Holy Cross. The contents appear to be two splinters with the label'Lig. S. Crucis. presumably for Lignum Sanctae Crucis, wood of the Holy Cross. Beneath this is a piece of cloth with the label'Cap. B. Mry. V. presumably for Cap Beatae Mariae Virginis, Cap is an abbreviation for'hair' Beneath that is a collection of fibers, labeled'Pal. S. Josephi' presumably for Pallium Sancti Josephi, the woolen cloak of Joseph. The reliquary itself has a thorned design around the exterior, reminiscent of the Crown of Thorns. The backing for the relics is blue cloth of some kind, with various ... moregold and silver adornments. This is a Russian piece, imported for retail in London in the early 1900s. The lid of the box has'Russian Work' inside in Russian. As well as Noble& Co, Dewar House, 11 Haymarket, London. The reliquary is in great shape. The glass has no chips. No cracks, no problems whatsoever. The box is in good shape and has done a great job of protecting the reliquary. We can see the glue where the hair was originally affixed, but the hair does not appear to be affixed to the glue at this time. It is very possible that the hair has moved to another part of the reliquary, as it may have been quite small, but we cannot verify either way for sure. Incredible relic reliquary of the favorite Franciscan Saint. Saint Leonard of Port Maurice. This 1st class relic is from France. The reliquary is a polished brass 2 piece reliquary thats gold in color. The back cover has a beautiful rendering of the Virgin Mary of the Miraculous Medal. I date this relic to about 1878-1880. The relic measures about 1 1/8' long. And about 7/8" wide. The condition is excellent. The back displays the Franciscan red seal in wax of Jesus' arm and Saint Francis' arm, crossed. The silk threads are intact and perfect, ensuring the validity of this relic. One of Saint Leonard's works which still affect us today is his devotion and preaching about the Stations of the Cross. This is a relic of the True Cross. Vraixe Croix, Vera Cruz. It is set in a theca hallmarked 2xs with French Sterling Silver marks.the boar's head and another. The wax seal and threads are perfect. The seal has a perfect bishops/cardinal's hat. The tassels and a shield with various markings. The reliquary has 3 threads. It measures 7/8" x 5/8" excluding the bail. The back cover has a representation of Jean Gabriel Perboyre or Perboyle. The first martyr associated with China. He was martyred in 1840. He was beatified in 1889. This calls him"Le Bienheurereux" which means"The Blessed" so this True Cross relic dates from after 1889, probably 1890-1899. This rare relic comes from the estate of a French Archbishop. MULTI Relic Reliquary HOLY SPONGE of Jesus Passion on Cross & HOLY SEPHULCHRE
Hi. This is a very very special multi reliquary from Italy. Circa 1740-1770. The most important and rare relic is from the SPONGE that the Roman soldier used to give Jesus vinegar and gall during the crucifixion, after Jesus said"I thirst. The account of Jesus receiving a sponge soaked in vinegar or sour wine while on the cross appears in all four of the gospels, Mark 15:35-36, Mathhew 27:47-48, Luke 23:36-37 and John 19:28-30. Most bible scholars consider this an act of mercy on the part of the Roman Soldier, who was not named in the bible accounts, but has been called Stephaton since before the year 600 AD.
