The demand for gold became so great that ultimately(by about 1000BC) the Himyarites in turn imported it from the Ancient South-Eastern African Kingdom of Monomotapa(present-day Rhodesia/Zimbabwe) known also as the Biblical city of Ophir, from which the Bible records that King Solomon received shipments of gold, silver, ivory, gemstones, and peacocks) In celebration of that heritage here are two gorgeous. Partly motivated by a desire to control that gold. Rome engaged Carthage in three wars(the“Punic Wars” In fact father of the great Carthaginian General Hannibal was a gold merchant. The Romans virtually deforested the entire country of Spain making charcoal to smelt silver and gold. When the gold in Spain began to play out, in about 100AD the Roman Emperor Trajan conquered Dacia(modern Romania) for their mines. The Dacians had historically traded this gold to the Greeks for pottery and to the Scythians for amber. The Romans also exploited smaller gold deposits found in the British Isles, and were the first to mass-produce coinage on a monumental scale, the first truly monetized society. Between 100 and 400AD the Romans produced millions of gold aureus coins, and billions of silver and bronze coins. At the height of the Empire, there were over 400 mints producing coinage throughout the empire. Gold was also fashioned into Greek-style jewelry. Publisher: Wrens Park Publishing; 1999) Although there have been many books written about medieval women. Few have focused specifically on the lady. In a book designed as a companion to the author's previous book. The Knight in Medieval England. Professor Coss attempts to remedy this with a work which concentrates on the role of the lady within medieval society, how she was perceived both by herself and by her male counterparts, how she related to and participated within the seemingly prevailing male culture of gentility, how the lives of lords and ladies inter-related, and how they behaved towards one another. The author begins by introducing the issues to be discussed through the example of the Pastons of the fifteenth century. The origins of the English lady are then considered and her position. Status and image during the eleventh and twelfth centuries examined, highlighting both changes and continuities. The book then develops this theme by looking at the widening gentility in England during the succeeding centuries, especially as expressed through a variety of visual media. Employing a variety of sources. Including double monumental effigies, brasses, and surviving letters, Professor Coss opens to popular scrutiny the affective relations between lord and lady, before turning to antagonistic relationships. DETAILS: The pharaohs of Egypt insisted on being buried in gold. Which they believed was the"flesh of the gods. The boy-king Tutankhamun was enshrined in three gold coffins. The third and final coffin was made of 243 pounds(110 kilograms) of solid gold. As well, gold artifacts and jewelry abounded, including the solid gold mask which weighed 10 kilos(24 pounds) It’s worth noting that Tutankhamun was a minor, almost unknown and forgotten pharaoh.
