A retablo is a painting on a small sheet of tin(although there are some examples made on copper or wood) depicting a scene with a hand written description made to a saint or deity as an expression of gratitude for believers. When a miracle is received. The origin of the word Ex Voto is Latin. And it means"for solemn vow or promise" Faced with a particular problem, people would ... morepray to a Saint or deity. When their prayers were"answered" the person would in return, offer an exvoto to that deity in the same way we give thank-you cards. Exvoto subjects range from common occurrences to truly dramatic events. Though some exvotos have been painted by the person receiving the miracle, most are made by retableros: commissioned artists who interpret people's stories and produce these tokens of appreciation to be placed/hung on church walls or shrines. Reinforcing the owner's devotion and gratitude. These lovely miracle paintings are in fact advertisements of the power and mercy of the saints. In Colonial times it was the Spanish who brought the exvoto idea to Mexico. A custom quickly adopted by the wealthy. In the late 19th century, the peasants had already started following this same tradition. The upper classes eventually dropped the practice, however, the lower classes continue to follow the custom today. These charming paintings are highly valued for artistic and cultural reasons. And collected by folk art enthusiasts around the world.

And this printing process became known as lithography. This was one of the first forms of commercial art. Reason why ... moresome of the images are incredible. Before produce growers and distributors started using cardboard boxes to ship their goods to market in the 1960s. Fruits and vegetables were(and occasionally still are, by smaller growers) shipped in inexpensive wooden crates and adorned with beautifully crafted labels. Packers made an effort to display their produce with colorful and attractive labels in order to generate more business at the local market. These colorful labels were pasted onto wooden crates and shipped all over the nation for nearly 70 years. In the late 1950's labels were no longer used because pre-printed boxes replaced the older wooden crates. The leftover labels were gathered up by collectors. Dealers, and old orchard owners. These unused labels make up the trading stock that exists today. And. They are getting scarce! Condition: Used andale andalesell. Stunning Large Shabby Vintage Virgin of Guadalupe Heavy Plaster Relief Plaque Oh. This one is a show stopper. It's stunning. What I have is a vintage, high relief plaster wall hanging that depicts the Virgin of Quadalupe. Virgen de Guadalupe, it reads at the bottom, Reina De Mexico, it continues, and appears to be written by hand into the plaster. You can see that she has 6 red beads in her crown- the only color on the piece other than the deep gold finish that covers her. This is a substantial plaster piece, it weighs 12 lbs. and measures 24" tall by 18" wide and is about 3- 3 1/2" thick as my estimate at her thickest- in the center. She's in excellent structural condition, but I am calling her shabby because of her chips to her plaster. They are all small, and I find them endearing. You could touch them up with gold ... morepaint if you wanted, but I'd leave her just as she is. The largest chip is at the very bottom front of the piece- I'm assuming from someone placing it on the ground. It's about 1/2" by 1/4" and I"m showing it in photo 11. In addition, she has a smaller chip at her very top that I'm showing in photo 6, some on the sides, some on the back edges, and the body. I'm showing a close up in photo 17 of the chips to her hands at the top. The angel at the bottom also has chips to the tip of his nose, hands and surrounding area- see photo 10. All of the chips are small, and actually, considering how heavy of a piece of old plaster this is, it's really in quite amazing condition. Please superisze and look at all my photos. As you can see, there are two metal hanging loops built into the plaster in the back. No other issues other than the shabby chips that I can find. It has both a rustic, as well as a fancy flair to it. I just can't say enough about it- it is absolutely stunning. Please ask if you have any questions. Or feel free to inform me if you have any information about one of my listings. As with any of my items, if you ever need extra pic

The first Marian apparition in the Americas. Guadalupe plays an important role not only in the religious history of Mexico and Latin America, but also in the nationalist struggle(and identity) of the Mexican people. Pope Benedict XIV in his Bull Non est equidem of May 25, 1754, named Our Lady of Guadalupe as Patroness of México. He quoted Psalm 147: Non fecit taliter omni nationi/ To no other nation has such a wonder been done. In 1895 Guadalupe was elevated to Queen of México; in 1910, Heavenly Patron of Latin America; and finally, in 1945, she became Empress of the Americas. Known for her miraculous powers to cure the sick. Our Lady of Guadalupe is especially invoked during times of illness although petitioners seek Guadalupe’s aid for matters great and small. Her feast day is on December 12, when millions of the faithful converge upon her basilica to pay homage. Hers is the most visited Marian site in the world and even rivals the Vatican itself as the most visited Christian shrine. PLEASE CHECK ALL PHOTOS ANY QUESTIONS JUST CONTACT US. This is a photographic glass magic lantern slide. Black and white, labeled, Pilgrims camping by the Capilla del Cerrito Guadelupe-Hidalgo, Mexico. The very famous Basílica of Guadalupe- not just another Catholic church, but the central place of worship for Mexico's patron saint and the home of the image responsible for uniting pre-Hispanic Indian mysticism with Catholic beliefs. It is virtually impossible to understand Mexico and its culture without appreciating the national devotion for Our Lady of Guadalupe. The blue-mantled Virgin of Guadalupe is the most revered image in the country, and you will see her countenance wherever you travel. Waves of pilgrims flood the place year-round, but are especially frequent during the Holy Week and especially the Holy Day of December 12. The Basilica de Guadalupe is considered by many Catholics ... moreto be the holiest place in all of the Americas and it is the most visited sanctuary in Latin America. The basilica may be the second most visited shrine in all the Catholic world, second only to St. Peter's in Rome(The Vatican) Magic Lantern Slides are one of the best untapped resources for antique photographs there are. Slides were usually discarded after a relatively short period of use so are difficult to find. Slide is 3 1/4" x 4" is in very good condition, and can be viewed by projecting, holding it to the light, or placing it on a light box. This slide can be made into a photograph or poster. If you would like information on having that done AFTER you purchase the view, please let me know. You can learn more about magic lanterns and slides by going to www.magiclanternsociety.org.
