Center piece has Our Lord with his Sacred Heart on the obverse- side and Our Lady of Mt. Carmel on the reverse side. Rosary measures approx 16 3/4 inches. Crucifix measures approx close to 1 1/8 inches tall. Blue Beads are of an old antique/vintage plastic. This Rosary shows antique/vintage wear. The centerpiece shows the true age of the rosary and probably dates to the 1800's. The cross is not original. You may change the cross to something more appropriate if you wish. Condition: Overall the original pieces are in great condition. The ebony wood seems a little dry but this could be from age. Our Lady of Salette is the Black Madonna who appeared to two French children in 1846 and forewarned them of World War I. The crucifix with tongs and hammer was worn by Mary in the apparition. And is Lady of Salette's signature. ● 1 larger(3/4" diameter) silver-plated brass medal signed by Ernest Revillon(1854-1937) on both sides. ● 1 small sterling silver medal enameled in blue. Marked STERLING on the back. ● 1 goldtoned medal signed Penin. ● 1 rosary with silver dotted camphor glass beads. Complete. Although 1 bead has no dots. ● 1 cross-shaped medal. The signature of Penin indicates the designer was either the famed French medalist Marius Penin(1807-1880) or Edmond Penin. Co-founder of the famed Penin Poncet foundry in Lyon. The story of Our Lady of Salette: In 1846 Mary appeared to Melanie Mathieu and Maximin Giraud in the French town of La Salette. She was crying. And around her neck was a crucifix with a hammer and pincers. Mary's message to the children was about her ire at people swearing and not observing the Sabbath. They are fairly lightweight material with natural inclusions. And appear to be hand carved rather than molded, with slightly varying sizes and shapes. For that reason I've concluded the following: ● The black ave beads are horn(from domestic livestock) Natural in color(the color goes all the way through) They're not heavy enough to be stone or gutta percha, and too early to be Bakelite. ● The blue pater beads are either real gemstone material such as lapis or sodalite. Or horn dyed to mimic them. One has a chip at the hole where it appears the blue color isn't just an applied surface coating. But when I say"lightweight. don't let that fool you. This is a very high-quality devotional, well made by expert artisans and well cared for over the decades. About all the metal: The crucifix. Connector, and sturdy chain have no hallmarks and I haven't tested them, but they may be silver(probably low grade) There's no corrosion or plate wear, so they're solid metal, and not steel or plated. If you look at the feet of Jesus, there are(2) nails, one in each foot. This is how the crucifix can be dated to 1830 or earlier. This crucifix is 2 1/4" long without the bail. The center piece is rare! If you look at Mary. She is facing down, or on the rosary, facing the crucifix! This changed around 1850!
