Also known as the Sudarium and the Saviour Uncreated-by-human-hands, is inspired by the legend of the miraculous transference of Christs countenance onto a piece of cloth which He used to wipe his face. This image, uncreated by human hands, was said to have been sent by Christ himself to Augarus, king of Edessa. In Edessa Augarus attached the cloth to a board which did not decompose and placed it in a niche made for it above the gates of the city. Two Saints A wonderful old Russian icon painting with matching solid silver riza. The symmetrical composition depicts two saints(Zosim and Sovati? in front of a church. Beautifully painted in great detail. The painting includes writing in Russian, perhaps the artist's name or an inscription relating to the piece. The silver riza overlays the painting with an identical image and cutwork that shows the saints' heads and hands. The finely detailed repousse on the silver includes lettering, geometric borders and 3-dimensional gilt haloes. The silver is hallmarked"1882, 84, M И" with additional assay and country marks. Amazing craftsmanship. All around. The icon has been split in two and the angel(center top) further damaged with a hole. It's held together lightly with archival paper tape. This is a stunningly large antique early 1900's hand painted chalk ware religious saint St. Therese of Lisieux statue. It is hand painted with beautiful detail and rich color which has also acquired a lovely patina from age. she is depicted with intricate detailing and stands on a large square base. she also holds a large gold gilded crucifix with Jesus crucified in her left hand. Has many roses in the other hand, and a rosary at her waist. the back of the base is marked by maker and dated 1927. she is overall in nice antique condition measuring 22 1/4 inches by 6 3/4 inches wide. there are several small nicks and some paint loss. Antique Painting Early 1800s RUSSIAN RELIGIOUS ICON THE ANNUNCIATION I purchased two early 1800s Russian Icons. This is the one that I did not have the opportunity to restore but based on the other one that I own. It is certainly worth the effort to restore. Please note. That I have enclosed two series of photos. The first series is representative of the icon as it is today without cleaning and restoration. The second series of photos is with the flash. This gives you a good perspective of how the Icon will look once the original colors are restored. The other Icon was photographed with flash and not only highlighted the detail of the icon but also the color pigments below and the intensity of the colors. Also note that the back slats are a good representative of the age of the piece and while doesn’t always help with forgeries. Helps one ... moreto accomplish the research. Panels that utilize what are known as"back slats" cross members that are dovetailed into the back of the boards that make up the panel to prevent warping during the drying process and to ensure structural integrity over time— are usually older than 1880/1890. Subsequent to 1880/1890. Advances in materials negated the need for these cross members, thus, are seen either on icons painted after this time period when the intent of the artist was to deceive by creating an"older looking" icon, or on icons which are rendered according to traditional means as a way of honoring the old processes. Back slats are sometimes necessary on newer icons of large size for the same reasons(warping and stability) as existed pre-1900. I suspect this came from a home as opposed to a church because the amount of dirt and soot which was removed from the other Icon. But there is no way I can be certain of this fact. Also note there are two areas of pigment loss which have been highlighted in the pictures. I hate to depart with this Icon but since I have never had it restored. It is time to offer it to someone who will complete the restoration. For those unf

This can't be faked or just"painted" on! ~Hardwood curved peaked case measures 20-1/2x5-3/4" at the base and is about 9-1/2 inches high. Staining has been mostly in dark. But also light tones. ~Has classic. Iconic Seth Thomas quality wood case, with original antique label on the bottom. Beautiful intricate hinged curved door on the back lets a person see indside, make adjustments, repair, etc. ~Original 1890 to 1920 or so wind-up workings inside have been ... moreretired. They have been replaced long ago by"newer" but still antique) electric works and face by General Electric. These parts are from the 1930's or possibly 1940's. ~Case still has its original convex(slightly protruding like a bubble) glass crystal. It sits in a round brass metal frame on hinges of same material. ~Thus this has become a hybrid with an antique"upgrade" done long ago. The face is handsome and effective to read. It all runs smoothly and quietly with a sweep second hand. It seems to run slow. And may need a speed adjustmentor cleaning, which is beyond my experience. ~These clocks are now valued as an icon of the turn of the century to mid-century. When they were so commonly used. Antique Asian Filipino Water Buffalo, Oxen Detailed Carving Statue Cultural Icon
This auction is for an Oxen statue. These same animals are highly revered in Asian culture because of how valuable they are to plow through the muddy jungles thus providing sustenance for their people. Most like these I've seen are wood and some older ones are bone and ivory. This one has me stumped. It may have been made out of a reconstituted material. When you shake it. You can hear a slight liquid sound inside of it. Unless having liquid encased has a meaning but I've never come across it despite the number of these I come across. This one looks much more like an older version and has incredible detail of any I've seen. This item may have more value than I realize but I'm not Asian and while the craft work is exceptional, I prefer other collectibles so it's up for sale. Any questions feel free to ask. This is a very large antique early 1900's hand painted religious Saint Anthony statue. it is beautifully painted with an abundance of rich color which has acquired a lovely patina from age. it's done with a realistic approach and very well made. made from very thick ceramic and has nice weight to it. it depicts baby Jesus and a bible being held by Saint Anthony with a bouquet of flowers under his arm and a draped rosary at his side. he stands on a routed square base and overall in nice antique condition. measures 21 1/4 inches tall by 7 1/2 inches wide. baby jesus has a crack on his forehead and there is a chip on the bottom of the bible. displays very well overall. 19TH C. ANTIQUE SIGNED RUSSIAN ICON RELIC ST. NICHOLAS TEMPERA WOOD EMBOSSED TIN
19th century-Circa 1800s ANTIQUE RUSSIAN PRIMITIVE FOLK ART SIGNED ICON SAINT NICHOLAS TEMPERA on WOOD& EMBOSSED HAND-HAMMERED TIN RELIC. Wonderful signed in two places-19th century antique primitive Russian icon religious relic of Saint Nicholas. It is signed on the back with a faded but legible hand-written Russian ink inscription-I cannot read Russian but date of person owning it or gifting it or church ownership is dated on the back and reads"1896" please see inscription and date on back of wood block. It also has a stamped/embossed into the metal/tin at side signature of maker which is a bit faded but reads something like"CH" or"CR" with maybe a backwards"R" hard to see) and the number"84" with a round stellar'star' shape next to the number, I have included a close-up pic ... moreof this embossed signature as well-please see close-up pic provided. This antique Russian Icon relic is from the 1800s and consists of what looks to be tempera on wood block which is in very good aged period condition(see pics provided) An icon of Saint Nicholas holding a scroll with white beard and hair and raised relief of painted Russian crosses(see pics) the wood block is wrapped in a metal or tin sheet which is embossed& hand-hammered with Archaic religious symbols of Russian crosses, a halo around the saint's head and a robe-the halo shroud has hand-hammered details of little beading work around the perimeter of the halo and the robe(see close-up pics provided) There are also hand-hammered dots which spell out Russian letters which I cannot read as I do not read Russian-please see close-ups provided of the Russian hand-hammered words on front at sides of the Saint figure. The antique icon measures approx. 3.75" tall x 3" wide and is in very good original condition for age with no repairs or repaint. For sale is a vintage cast metal(copper/bronze? Last Supper plaque with Italian writing below the scene that reads: Amen Dico Voris Quia Unus Vestrume Traditurus Est. The plaque is 13 1/2" tall x 18 3/8" wide overall. It's ornately self-framed and the previous owner attached a hanger to the panel which could be replaced. The hanger is strong enough to hold the 5 1/2 lb plaque but doesn't hang quite straight. An easy remedy with a picture straightening strip. I'm not sure what's painted on the backside, but the piece is 100% metal. The plaque is in great condition as pictured with minimal use wear present.
