RARE Vintage 1970 Masonic Altar Table Cloth OES Fraternal
Vintage altar cloth in very good condition for its age. As all sales are final(no returns accepted) Please email me with any questions before bidding. The cream colored altar cloth measures approximately 70 inches long and 50 inches wide– including the lace trim. The Star is in the center of the cloth. Each of the star points. As well as the center, has a piece of colored cloth machine stitched on. There is also machine stitching around the star. The remaining lettering and symbols were hand inked. The podium in the center reads 1970. It is unclear what the material is but it feels similar to a cotton-poly blend. This item was made with great attention to detail as it is very well crafted. Overall.The altar cloth is in great condition for its age. There are two. Small tan spots which I have photographed and what appears to be a faint ink ... moresmudge. There is a very slight. Sweet musky odor to the cloth But. Seriously, you have to stick your nose on it to smell it. A few hours in the sunshine should take care of it. There are creases in the fabric from being folded. The exterior is a faded red paint over the hardwood. The doors flap open and close. w/a wire latch-hook. The inside door panels appears to have a piece of like colored paper covering it them wallpaper. The piece is solidly constructed and stands squarely on it's four legs. The nicho has a glass facing intact with no cracks. The contents and decorations are permanently enclosed. The corpus figure of Jesus is handcarved and fully painted. The carved and painted details are superbly naive as Jesus is depicted with hair. A beard, fingers and toes, wounds. The cross also handcarved and is painted green. The crown is thick cut and curled tin and the loin cloth is ... morea woven purple fabric that is trimmed in silver foil. Surrounding the figure are handformed flowers/lilies and roses made of colored foils and crepe paper. The flowers are suspended by a thread. And attached to a ribbon like a garland. Made of bronze, cast in the form of a mythical lion, depicted with its jaw open, showing fangs, a horned head, a scroll mane, scrolls on its shoulders, and a scroll tail. Its back is adorned with a foliate scroll decorated candlestick. This was probably made for use on an altar. The underside is hollow cast. This candlestick measures 9.4 cm in length and 9.1 cm in height. It weighs 239 grams. The condition is generally excellent, without damage or repair, the bronze has the patina of age. Listed are two matching walnut Gothic and Eastlake style parlor chairs with turned front legs. Pictures 1 through 5 are of chair one and 6 through 10 are of chair two. Mexican or New Mexican Bulto- Altar ~ 19th Century ~ Spanish Colonial Painted& Carved ~ please scroll down for more photos ~ SIZE: Height- 19" Width- 8.75" Depth- 5" DESCRIPTION: Very fine antique Mexican or New Mexican altar with carved figures and profusely painted with Christian- Spanish Colonial imagery. The altar is in the form of a Cross mounted on a stepped pedestal base and there are two carved and painted praying figures attached to the base at the bottom of the cross. Possibly Adam and Eve. The entire front of the piece is painted with images. As you can see. A crucified Jesus Christ is the main image, but there are also images of the Madonna, Saints, all sorts of symbolic tools and instruments, skulls and crossed bones, a deceased person wrapped in red cloth, and at the bottom, eight Anima Solas caught in the ... morefires of purgatory and surrounding a painting of Adam and Eve with the apple tree and serpent. This piece has more interesting images on one piece than I have ever seen. Probably Mexican in origin. But some of the faces look like the New Mexican style by Jose Rafael Aragon and the other Santeros in that Northern area. The piece appears to be quite old and I would guess that ir was made after 1850 but before 1900- maybe circa 1880's. On the unpainted bottom there is a nicely penciled name. Pablo" possibly the name of one of the owners over the years. This is a museum quality example of Hispanic- Latin American- Mexican or New Mexican religious folk art. AGE: 19th Century. CONDITION: Good ethnographic condition. As shown in the photos and with the following noted: Loss of the lower legs and feet of the larger carved figure. Wear and small losses to the painted surfaces, as shown. Darkening to the wood surfaces and a deep rich patina overall from smoke, dirt, handling and age. Overall, very good condition. The altar cloth is filled with amazing embroidery crosses and flowers and accented with couched metallic gold thread. This small table cover would be great for the upcoming holiday table dressing. This small table cloth would look lovely displayed on a small table or draped over a large table as a unique table topper. The hand done silk thread embroidery design is of 4 separate crosses in each of the corners. Above the four crosses is a flower bud leading to a large open flower with petals followed by more flower buds and leaves and stems. The colors of the silk thread embroidery are in shades of green. In fact both share a similar religious system in which deities among the Yoruba called Orishas are known as vodun among the Fon with similar characteristics and powers. In the various districts of communities altars would be dedicated to deities with specific attributes and powers. Figures of this type among the Fon and Ewe are generally found in the lower Mano River Region and in a tradition not fully documented.
