Description You are bidding on this very large Bernardaud and Cie Limoges vase decorated in textured gold featuring symbols of the cross.Specifically the French cross of Lorraine, and grapes and wheat(eucharistic symbols) Currently, altar vases are made of brass so it is very rare to find one in porcelain. This piece was used in a church as an altar item. I removed much candle wax and smoke remnants from the surface, suggesting it was placed near the candles on the altar. It also has some green florist's foam remaining in the bottom indicating it was used for a floral arrangement more recently. The bottom has the green B& Co, France mark that dates the vase to the years between 1900 to 1911. There are no chips, cracks or hairlines to the vase. There are still some light smoke and wax remnants here and there(to the left of the vertical ... moreline in the cross, for example) No chips or repairs. Dimensions: 15" high x 7" diameter Bernardaud& Cie was established in 1900 when Leonard Bernardaud bought La Taupiniere factory on Rue Albert Thomas in Limoges. This factory had been established in 1863 by P. Guery and R. Delinieres. Owned by Delinieres alone from 1879. Leonard Bernardaud and his father both had worked for Delinieres, and Leonard may have been a partner from 1895. A New York office run by the son Jacques Bernardaud was opened in 1911. Another factory was bought in 1919. Brother Michel Bernardaud was director from 1923-1949. In 1948 he installed the first effective tunnel kiln in Limoges.

THE RAKU FIRING TECHNIQUE Raku is a quick 1 to 3 hour low-fire firing to around cone 07; about 1846 degrees Fahrenheit. Red hot clay pieces are taken out of the kiln with tongs and then covered. After cooling a few minutes. The piece is immersed in water. This unique technique utilizes the four elements: earth(clay) fire(the firing) water(immersion) ... moreair(reduction) This FINE CERAMIC Blessing Bowl is handmade and hand glazed. The majority is raku fired for the glaze. Although a small portion is oxidation fired in an electric kiln. The artist uses stamps in bowls and incense burners. And the majority are hand carved in clay, a time consuming process requiring slowly carving away the many layers to the design edges. Some of the designs take many hours. The bowl forms are all made on a slab roller and then placed in a form to dry. They are then sanded and bisque fired to cone 04 in the electric kiln. This process takes about 10 hours. Washing and glazing is next. Followed by a second firing in the raku kiln. This takes about 2.5 hours. Pieces are again washed. Your blessing bowl will take a lot of heat without cracking but the underneath surface must be protected as they conduct heat. Sand is recommended inside the bowl if the bowls are used to burn cone incense. This will protect the design from being scorched. Care: Hand wash as fine china. According to recent scholarship based on a rare series of bronze coins and artifacts found in the region, the caves and their adjacent valley probably comprised a sovereign kingdom in Gandhara which maintained at least partial independence for almost 500 years, from c. 4th century AD to the 9th century AD. For most of its history, it was ruled by White Hun(or Hephthalite) governors or princes. Scholars contend that the bronze currency found in the region were issued by local semi-independent governors, or Tegins, in ... morethe Kashmir Smast valley, paying allegiance to the greater Hunnic Tegins of Gandhara and Bactria. I bought these at Red Baron Auctions in Atlanta(rbantiques dot com) These are solid oak with mahogany stain and have a wonderful gothic design. Each baluster is 125" long x 17" wide x 38" tall. They are in very good sound condition however they require having their finish restored. They are sturdy and make quite a statement. They are intended for indoor use. However, they could be adapted to outside use with the right amount of work put into it. The pictures were rotated in iPhoto and appear correct in my file. When eBay loads them, they get turned sideways again for some reason- sorry about that. They are being sold as a pair. Who"made wind with her wings. Place your own aspirational wishes. Spells, crystals, flora or fauna into her bowl, and let her wisdom be joined to the rituals you are working. THE RAKU FIRING TECHNIQUE Raku is a quick 1 to 3 hour low-fire firing to around cone 07; about 1846 degrees Fahrenheit. Red hot clay pieces are taken out of the kiln with tongs and then covered. After cooling a few minutes. The piece is immersed in water. This unique technique utilizes the four elements: earth(clay) fire(the firing) water(immersion) ... moreair(reduction) This FINE CERAMIC Blessing Bowl is handmade and hand glazed. The majority is raku fired for the glaze. Although a small portion is oxidation fired in an electric kiln. The artist uses stamps in bowls and incense burners. And the majority are hand carved in clay, a time consuming process requiring slowly carving away the many layers to the design edges. Some of the designs take many hours. The bowl forms are all made on a slab roller and then placed in a form to dry. They are then sanded and bisque fired to cone 04 in the electric kiln. This process takes about 10 hours. Washing and glazing is next. Followed by a second firing in the raku kiln. This takes about 2.5 hours. Pieces are again washed. Your blessing bowl will take a lot of heat without cracking but the underneath surface must be protected as they conduct heat. Sand is recommended inside the bowl if the bowls are used to burn cone incense. This will protect the design from being scorched. Care: Hand wash as fine china. Up for Auction Is: The Holy Name Alter& Sick Call Outfit Antique Oak Home Last Rites Box Patented 1909 by Koenig Bros. Back in the day most people were treated for illness and died at home. Hospitals were not in widespread use and doctors and priests(Catholic and Anglican. And others) made house calls. It was fairly common for families to have such a"sick call shrine" to assist the priest in delivering the Sacrament to the sick and dying. The Holy Name Altar is one style of what is commonly called a Viaticum referring to the Bread of Life needed to make the journey to the afterlife. The Holy Name Altar was intended for ongoing devotions also and NOT just for times of illness or death The box is meant to be recessed into the wall(a wire hanger has been added to hang flat on the wall) It has a fold down altar held with a chain ... moreand features built in ornate candle stick holders on the sides. Most of these boxes are missing the candle stick holders. The upper part of the piece is a shadow box Pieta Shrine with Mary holding the sacrificed Jesus. The statue seems to be made of plaster or chalk ware and is enclosed in glass. It features reverse painting on glass with angels in the upper corners. Iconic symbols down the sides and the words"Blessed Be Thy Holy Name" at the bottom. I do not have any of the items that go in the box. 22 3/44" in height x 13" in width x 3 1/2" in depth It is in very good Antique Condition with a few minor scratches and some wear from age. 1912 Antique Altar base Catholic "The Five Mysteries" + palm prayer cards
This appears to be a base for a home a ltar. It features a green. Gold, cream and black reverse glass silk-screened window that enclose s a scroll. There a a few tiny chips a long the edges of the glass but nothing serious. The scroll rotates by using the two wooden handles to reveal a series of 18 beautifully detailed and colorful lithographs. The scroll is copyright 1912 by Koenig Bros. and is in excellent condition. With no stains or tears. The images depict the life, cruc ifixion and resurrection of Christ. They are presented in"The Five Joyful Mysteries" The Five Sorrowful Mysteries" and"The Five Glorious Mysteries" The box measures10" x 6.5" x 3" deep. Not counting the handles or the candle holders. The glass is held in a channel by 2 decorative metal corner pieces. These pieces could be removed ... moreto clean the underside of the glass, which has accumulated some dirt and haze. There are a few scratched areas on the wood which will easily touch up. On the top are two cast pot metal candle-holders and what looks like the base of a crucifix. On the back there are a few tiny nail holes. So it seems likely that a crucifix was once there but has since been removed. The back has a compartment lined with de corative chip board and a place to hold items. We purch ased this at an antique show with several woven palm prayer cards tucked in the back. So we are including them as well. I have no idea how old they are. But they make a nice compliment to the altar. This is such a unique religious collectible. Hopefully we have accurately identified i t as research turned up very little information. If you have any more information to add. Email us and we will be gla d to add it. It would be wonderful for this item to continue to have a place of honor in someone's home or in a liturgical antiques collection. The base has images of the faces of Jesus, Mary& Joseph in high relief. Overall height is 15. so it would meet the canonical requirements for liturgical use in a small chapel or by a traveling priest, while still being small enough to be easily accommodated on a home devotional altar. Each side of the base is about 5" wide. One of the back feet has been damaged at some point& part of the scrolled foot has been filed off. Up for auction is a really nice lot of 4 count extra large sized altar cross/crucifix lot. These are very nice and vintage but in great condition. They are silver and gold in color and all have been on an altar at various churches in the past. They come from a prestigious priest estate. There is one where the Jesus figure has come apart from the cross and has been helped back by some tape as you can see in the photos. There is a brass like cross.
