Vintage Tall Silverplated Altar Vase with cross, crown of thorns and IHS motif
Another unusual item courtesy of Great Aunt Euphania and her addiction to 2nd hand stores. This is a nice silverplated old altar vase. It measures 12" high and the base is about 5" at the widest point. One side of it shows the crown of thorns and within this is a cross with the letters IHS over it. The IHS is an abbreviation for In Hoc Signo(Latin for"By this Sign I" or also as a Christogram for the first three letters of the name of Jesus in Greek(iota-eta-sigma) We have also heard people say it stands for"in His service" but tend to stick with the more traditional meanings, anyway it is a typical Christian symbol found frequently on altar items. The only markings we find are some small letters/numbers on the edge of the base which read"E1802" and below this"98Z" The fact that this is silverplate ... morelets you know this is an older piece when more people attended church and you had a society of gentlewomen who would polish the church silver. Ornate brass hardware accents the chest. The chest features 4 pull out drawers(2 small and 2 larger) of solid wood and a larger, double door cabinet which is centrally positioned. This section is completely lined with paper that is inscribed with Chinese characters. The paper covers both door backs, the cabinet bottom and the cabinet back face. The paper is attached and fixed to the cabinet. These doors are held with a large brass, medallion styled fastener. The lower drawers are lined with a red velveteen fabric on the bottoms.
