A pair of sake or altar vases for a shinto shrine, of garlic head bottle form with long cylindrical necks and oval bodies, the glaze of white tones with some discolouration(possibly smoke or incense) and one of the pair with an incised mark- DAIO and the reverse with a simple depiction of mountains and clouds in the Nanga painting style. Bases unmarked. Probably Seto ware. When used as a sake set it would make sense to have one marked and one unmarked to clarify which was being used while the other was being warmed, and in a better class of establishment, two bottles might be served at once, one hotter than the other. This is an extremely rare early 19th century solid bronze religious altar crucifix. This crucifix is of the highest quality and extremely well made with an abundance of very intricate precise detailing. it is made from thick bronze and is very heavy. the cross has an extremely detailed figural scene on the face which depicts hell at the bottom. Purgetory in the middle and heaven at the top. the scenes are very detailed. Done in high relief, and as legibly clean as a bronze casting can get. the tips of the cross are equally as ornate with nice cut out detailing. Jesus is very dimensional and also made from solid bronze. the base is 4 sided with tapered detailed edges. there are three scenes all done in very high relief. What a captivating photograph portrait! I recently rediscovered this intriguing antique photograph portrait of an ALTAR BOY. Framed in a Tigerwood frame, with a convex bubble glass. Based on the clothing and framing style. My best guess is that this piece is from the 1920's, and may go back as far as the 1910's. The oval photograph measures approximately 19-3/4" x 13-3/4" With frame, this piece measures approximately 22-3/4" x 16-3/4" The oval Tigerwood frame is highly detailed. There is considerable chipping and wear issues to some of the edges of the frame. See photos. 17 antique nails hold the backing on. it is securely ... moreheld. It has the old style wire hanger where the wire hanger actually shows over the top of the frame(when hung) The frame remains sturdy and strong. The photograph is in excellent condition. This stunning piece just came in from a European auction. I'm afraid there is very little known about it has it came from a private Estate. It is a lovely altar cross.
