It is a wood structure trunk and frame with smooth me tal(black) and woven pattern metal riveted overlays with beautiful beading to ta ck in metals and curved and straight gorg eousl y grained wood slat s. Here's what I stated about it s condition: Metal overlay surfaces have been repainted and restored. Some scratches and scuffs marks on beautifully grained wood slats. Leather handle missing on left side. Flip up side locking latches both flip up into locking position. But only one catches to keep it lock closed and the other is missing its catch. Center locking latching closes in position but does not lock and there is no key. Interior lining shows foxing and staining and has some t ares due to great age. $38.00 Shipping Condition: Used Location: Raleigh, United States A recent estate sale purchase. A small child's size travel/ steamer trunk complete with a tray and a key. This trunk measures approximately 22" ... morelong X 14" wide X 15 1/2" high and it has two hinges in back that hold the lid securely to the base. There used to be sturdy leather handles on each side of the trunk but they are no longer intact, these can be purchased inexpensively on-line and they're fairly easy to replace. The corner protectors and hardware appear to be brass plated steel. There are two hasp type closures, one on each side of the lock and the lock needs to be bent just a little to close it securely. We tried the key and the locking mechanism seems to work properly but we didn't want to damage anything so it will arrive open with the key tucked in an envelope safely inside. The inside of the trunk is wood and there should be wood beneath the black material covering the outside(it is non-magnetic and we don't think it's metal) This little trunk is in very good condition and once it's restored it should be a beauty- perfect for your antique doll collection or as a gift for a very special grandchild. For sale is a spectacular pair of solid. Hand carved, very old, antique Italian chests/high-boys from a monastery/convent. I estimate these to be from the early 1800's and most likely Tuscan in origin. They are phenomenal. They are missing the original marble tops as well as the original fretwork on the legs(only one piece remains) Some damage from woodworms as well as regular splits, cracks, scratches commensurate with their age and function. New marble tops and a little restoration work(I think they look lovely the way they are however, to be honest.they have a rustic appeal to them due to their wear) will make these the highlight of any room. They both have mortise locking doors(I do not have the keys) with carved floral motifs which open to reveal a complete chest of drawers in one and a partial chest of drawers in the other with ... moreadorable little double doors where the friar would have most likely placed something precious like an ostensory or reliquary. Last year. April-June, I made a lot of eBayers very happy! I held a big sale of antique paintings and other items(over 100! from a large London mansion. Enthusiastic buyers won LOTS of wonderful family heirlooms for very little(see my 100% feedback! and came to pick them up from the house(a few minutes walk from London's Oxford Circus) I'd intended to move out and spent the rest of the year abroad. I'm now back in the UK and the place is(contrary to planning) still mine! So I'm back in the old house again, temporarily, and will be selling a few more things until my final move. Some of these things are items I hadn't intended to sell, so I hope you find something you like! Large 19th Century Oak Chest with Brass Lion's Feet and Older Parts. Used for Bedroom Blanket Box. Storage Chest/Trunk/Box"A grand old chest! ... moreFor years this has been a magical dressing up box! It's full of lots of antique costumes and accessories. Younger relations head straight for it when they visit! But it would be good as a blanket box or general storage. It's very tall and has a huge amount of space. It looks a bit more impressive than many similar items. Having some grand trimmings, almost armorial. The carvings on the front are very imposing and clearly of some age. This type of carving often surrounded a coat of arms, which may have been removed in years gone by. It also has some lovely brass lion's feet(which really need shining up…they'll look really good when polished! We believe the front of the chest is much old than the rest. It's not uncommon to have wooden furniture rebuilt over the years. Often when they suffer from woodworm or general wear. One of the four rosettes on the front isn't there(I've only just noticed this, after all these years! It's dark wood, so you don't really notice. You would have to look hard to find a better restored origianl Genny Lind stagecoach trunk. This mid 1800s trunk has had a great restoration including new leather straps and buckles on the outside. Lovely quilted interior. And beatiful restoration of the tooled leather covering. And it does not smell! On the interior it still sports the wood restraining flap that would allow you to fill that side of the trunk and then close it without everything falling out. See the last 2 photos Petite size approximately 20" long. 13.5" wide and 9" deep. A kind and knowledgeable ebayer just added this info. the actual name for one of these is a valise. They used to put that on many of the old labels. Such as trunk, valise, and carpet bag manufacturer. condition. Overall a great looking trunbk but it is about 150+ years old. the hinges have ... morebeen replaced and work perfectly. The lock in not functional but it closes fine. It measures 36 inches long by 24 in ches tall with the lid closed by 20 inches deep. It features a remova ble storage tray and more linens. Beddings. And clothing can be placed underne ath for conv enient additional hu ge storage. It is a wood structure trunk and frame with smooth me tal(black) and woven pattern metal riveted overlays with beautiful beading to ta ck in metals and curved and straight gorg eousl y grained wood slat s. Here's what I stated about it s condition: Metal overlay surfaces have been repainted and restored. Some scratches and scuffs marks on beautifully grained wood slats. Leather handle missing on left side. Flip up side ... morelocking latches both flip up into locking position. But only one catches to keep it lock closed and the other is missing its catch. Center locking latching closes in position but does not lock and there is no key. Interior lining shows foxing and staining and has some t ares due to great age. But smells clean with nice scent like cedar inside. Truly a rare beauty of extra large size that has great looks and craftsmanship on evident in these earlier era pieces of exceptional beauty. There are some tears in the exterior leather and a hole in the leather in the back. The case measures 13.5" wide. 21.75" tall and 8" deep. It weighs about 19 pounds. There is a bit of a musty smell. Nice Refinished Dome Top Victorian Steamer Trunk Antique Chest With Key and Tray
Nice Refinished Antique Dome Top Steamer Trunk With Working Lock and Key. Interior Compartment Area, and Tray Here is a very nice clean refinished dome top steamer trunk or travel trunk from the late 1800's. Here are the dimensions: from left to right across the front is 28 inches. From floor to top is approximately 23 1/2 inches, and from front edge to back edge is 18 inches. This beautiful hump back chest is made up of poplar base wood with oak outer slat boards. The wood has a nice natural color, or patina which has come about only by age since there was no staining of the wood during the refinishing process. We have finished the wood with three coats of polyurethane by Minwax. The wood is in pretty good condition with only some typical character marks which include older nicks and dings and some stress cracks. This one comes with ... morethe original working lock. We have matched up a key that does activate the lock. The metal parts that make up this trunk are not brass, and have therefore been brush painted by hand in black and gold leaf. The front latches are original and are in working condition since the springs are intact. The side handles on this trunk have been replaced with Amish made black leather stitched straps. All of the leather that we use on our trunks comes from an Amish man in an Amish community near our house here in Pennsylvania. Going to the interior of this great trunk. It comes with an interior tray which we have replaced the bottom with wood to make it sturdy. This trunk's interior has also has the hidden compartment on the left side under the dome that we recreated. We put the drop door back on this compartment area and added a nice picture to the door. You can drop this door down to put items in this area and conceal them up inside the dome. At the right side, we have left the original decorative emblem and border in place. The thickly painted writing on top states: W H POPE PASSENGER TO MASSILLON OHIO USA. Northeast Ohio. Near Canton(south of Cleveland) Made of STEEL. With slightly corrugated sides, Oval Shaped, Hinged Lid. HAND MADE HASP holds the handle. And FRONT LATCH appears to be hand made, as well. And the single, LONG hinge at back. All 3 are very well done, but do not at all look like factory made pieces. Construction is STURDY. With Lapped edged on lid, Bottom and sides. Heavy enough to be STURDY and strong, but not too heavy to be unweildly. All hinges and clasps are secure and strong. Painted a dark bittersweet/mustardy-brown color. Antique Scottish Folk Art miniature chest of drawers box circa 1860
A box. Made to look like a Scottish full sized chest of drawers, with columns down the front. The kind of chest of drawers that used to be called a"Scotch chest" The drawers don't open. The top lifts up to reveal a plain box. Very much a one off. Made perhaps as a present and very much in the Folk Art tradition. Each part is homemade- you can see the whittle marks on the feet and even the handles have been made for this piece. Brass hinges and lock plate were bought. The rest is all individual. Approximately 27cm x 21.6cm across the top. Height- 24cm. A pleasing size. Condtion- It has at some point had a bad bash to the base. Which has knocked one of the feet off and it has been glued on again. It is old, old glue and could be done again much better with modern glues and not show. At the same time, you can see in the photo, ... morea crack appeared in the base at the back. The sides have been decorated with a shaped overlay. On one side three pieces are missing, on the other two. I would say this could easily be fixed without too much trouble and also could be ignored quite easily! The hinge works well and closes and opens and the front, the decorative part has all its knobs and drawers etc. The starting price reflects the damage and it is still a really fun thing. antique Civil War Navy SAILOR'S TRAVELING SEA TRUNK dated "1865"
This old sailor's wooden trunk measures 28" long x 19" wide x 21" high and shows dovetailed construction with rope handles on sides. Dating from the Civil War. The seaman who owned the trunk penciled an inscription in three lines on the underside of lid which is hand written and difficult to decipher but it has a date visable"November 1865" and his name is on the bottom line(difficult to make out) The trunk is heavily constructed with reinforced iron strap hinges that go all the way around and they are held in place with old hand forged rose-head nails. Also of interest is that it still retains both of its original hemp rope handles and there was some old shells in the bottom when the trunk was found. Condition: the right clasp hinge with eye bolt is missing and was replaced with another clasp. Some of the nails ... moreholding the strap hinges are more modern replacements but could easily be removed and square nails put in their place. Some of the wood slats are cracked. One rope handle is detached but both could be replaced easy enough. The trunk is still very sturdy. If you collect Civil War era Navy or mid 19th century nautical items. This is a nice bright blue steamer trunk. With metal corners, hardware and strapping. I believe the walls, bottom and lid are made of thin plywood with an exterior lining of sheet metal.Measuring about 29½" x 14½" and about 10¼" tall, it has a single leather or faux leather carrying handle on the front, right beside the lock. The inside is lined with paper printed with a wood grain design. I don't know the age of it, but it looks mid twentieth century, doesn't it? I also don't see any sign of manufacturer identification, and no labels to tell where it traveled. It has some surface scuffs and scratches. Especially on the top and bottom, in fact there are some distinct pressure dents around the edge of the lid, as shown in the third picture below. This is a very clean large oak trunk that has a variety of uses such as a blanket chest. Toy chest, or wonderful coffee table. It is made of solid oak with the original finish that has a nice patina and is finished on all sides including the back. The inside of the trunk has been painted red but can be stripped back to the natural oak. The trunk is 48" wide, 22" deep, and 24 1/2" tall. There is a piano hinge that opens the top. There is a lock but I do not have the key. The trunk was originally on rollers. One of the blocks under the trunk that holds the roller insert is damaged but is easily repairable if rollers are prefered. Email with any questions. The lock plate is marked with patent dates of March'59& April'77 and the hinge bar is marked May'70- please note these are 1800 dates(1859, 1870 and 1877) The exterior has canvas over wood with metal corners and lock latch. The interior features paper covering-womens clothes and accessories in the cover and checkered pattern on the lower section-with some water spots. This antique treasure measures 10 3/4" by 18" by 10 3/4" and is in good condition consistent with its age. This late 1800's CHILD'S STEAMER TRUNK would have possibly held its' clothes and undoubtedly held its' familiar treasures which made it feel more comfortable on a long journey. Part of the travels of this trunk's owner would have been by sea as well as land. As evidenced by the many travel decals on the outside of the metal steamer trunk. From Egypt, Australia, Holland, etc. This child was a world traveler. The reinforced metal trunk measures 11 X 11 X 20 inches. Has four pull-out drawers and one side of the trunk is a place for coats and clothes, or possibly a favorite doll or bear. The trunk was produced by EDUCATIONAL PLAYTHINGS; their label is on the lock side of the trunk. The cloth covering of the interior of the trunk is faded, and contrasts with the brighter blue on the inside of the ... moredrawers. The metal fasteners which hold the two sides of the trunk together are operational; there is no key to the heavy metal lock; the leather handle on top of the trunk is mostly missing. The top and base appear to be a marriage with the top being older then the base. The drawer fronts have a pronounced Tiger Maple and the color of the chest is that honey golden brown that is most sought after. The top appears to be a period piece from the early 1800s. The base appears to be more custom made which might be made 50 years ago, it is hard to tell. The originally outside canvas covering and interior paper have been removed to show the beauty of the pine wood. The wood was sanded and refinished with stain and multiple coats of sealer. All hardware is original and in excellent shape. The hinges and lid stay are strong and work properly. All hardware was cleaned and sealed. The lock does not have a key. French Empire Mahogany Marble Top Commode Chest Dresser with Gilt Mounts c. 1805

Description: This listing is for a 19th Century French Empire Period Mahogany Marble Top Ormolu Mounted Commode. Circa 1805. It is a fascinating work of art, constructed in three parts- first the marble, which is extremely heavy at just over an inch thick(1 1/16" thick) the top of the chest with the top drawer, and the bottom of the chest with the lower three drawers. Lifting the marble reveals the construction of the topmost portion. Each of the front corners with a full gallery of hand cut dovetails that lock the top into the thick corners. All of the secondaries are solid oak, joined with large pegged tenons along the frame, this large thick top joining the lower case with thick through-tenon wedged mortise joints- by ... morepulling out the wedge, the tenon drops out of the top portion, freeing it from the lower case. This lifts away from the case as long as the columns are not nailed at the top. The top drawer features the most incredible gilt ormolu mounts. Cast with stunning attention to even the smallest detail. Horizontal curled anthemions flank a seated angel, inscribing in a blank scroll. With wings furled behind, detailed even down to the tiniest feather, the angel rests with legs slightly bent as the robe flows from his legs, a trumpet peering out from behind him. Over either columnar support, gilt ormolu mounts of angels flank the top drawer, the figure on the right peering towards the sky with a globe behind him, the angel on the left sitting on a carefully crafted French Empire chair reading a scroll. The turned columns on either side rest on square plinths. Capped at the top and bottom with gold gilt flamed mounts, finely detailed throughout. Three drawers slide in and out of the case, each hand dovetailed front and back with solid oak secondary woods making up the frame and bottoms. Beautiful Victorian Era Steamer Trunk. This trunk has been conserved or restored. Has had quite a bit of work, but the only thing that has been added& isn't original to this trunk are the leather handles. Everthing else is original to this particular trunk The trunk had 3 coats of paint that were removed from its exterior. Afterward it is was polished witha metal polish, there is still some patina, after 100 plus years it is almost impossible to remove all of that with just cloth and polish lol The paint was light green and off white. In certain places small remnants of the paint may remain. Without damaging the surface of the trunk it is very hard to totally get it all off. Also I think it adds to the already very rustic beautiful charm of the trunk. It is important to note the color variations you see in the pics on the metal ARE ... moreNOT paint. This is actually a pattern in the metal. One the end pieces I think it is patina and discoloration. But the middle piece on lower portion, and next to end pieces on top, I think it is the way the metal is made. It is very beautiful, and seems purposefully placed There is very gorgeous and unique hardware. There are little flower or star shaped medallions on top of trunk and on the front of trunk The wooden slats have been sanded stained and finished The handles were replaced with strips of 100% leather Interior of trunk was stripped of all inside paper. They generally have a curved top that slopes in both directions and built using a variety of construction methods including molded ply and barrel construction among others. Within this style of trunks are a few other names that have come about based on the positioning of the wood slates that cover the dome construction. The exact origin of these names is unknown but seem reasonable and listed below as I understand them. Barrel Stave Trunks(1860-1885) they generally date a bit earlier than most of the dome tops made and have horizontal running slats instead of vertical(end to end vs. ... moreover the top) Giving it a slightly different look. The word"stave" in this case refers to the wood slats. These trunks were mostly made from the late 1860's until about the mid 1880s when the other dome construction methods listed below became more widely used. Often early examples of this style have a graceful. Well proportioned look and the later examples into the 1870's are quite simply well made. This trunk is in good condition.
