Auction includes two black leather straps 9 1/2" long by 1 1/4" wide and about 1/4" thick pre-slotted to receive the prongs on the retainers. Four gold painted pronged metal retainers approx. 3 1/2" by 1 1/4" Sixteen split tacks for nailing the retainers(Eight 1" split tacks for the inside and eight 3/4" split tacks for the outside) Once the retainers are nailed in place you have your movable handle. This design will allow for the handle to flatten out when not in use. Drill the sides of the trunk about 1/4" where the prong is to be located. 1880's US Army Officer Wood Trunk
This very solid wood trunk has markings on the lid and front which clearly indicate the name Theo Schwan. The trunk features metal handles and corner brackets and is quite heavy. I've uploaded photos which I believe show the best markings. The lid shows the rank of Major. Wikipedia shows the name of Theo Schwan matches that of a retired US Army Major General Theodore Schwan. A Medal of Honor recipient who served in the Civil War(Battle of Peebles' Farm) the Indian Wars(Red River War and Great Sioux War) the Spanish Amer ican War. And the Phillipine-American War. He is buried in Arlington National Cemetery. He also served with the Eleventh US Infantry regiment, commanding Company G at Fort Phantom Hill, Texas from 1870- 1873. Antique Steamer Trunk with Embossed Metal accents
Wonderful antique steamer trunk from family estate. Was my great-aunt's piece. In very good condition for it's age(late 1800's) This trunk measures 30" W x 15 1/2" D x 19 1/2" H. Bent wooden handles are in great condition and solid. Wood slats have a nice rich patina and metal is embossed with shell pattern and shows no rust. Original rollers on bottom, but at some point, additional rollers added. Trunk sits firmly on these rollers. Interior is in great condition with some peeling wallpaper. This is a great piece. It is a German antique steamer trunk I believe to be from about 1890-1910. This is a rare style of trunk. Double locked and oak banded(made with half round oak banding instead of flat wood bands) The exterior canvas is mostly intact with some nicks and tears from use. The color of the exterior varies a bit from darker to lighter brown. There are remnants of some old old labels on the outside of the trunk as well. All original locks. Hardware, etc. The interior lining is mostly there. But with some tears. The leather handles are still on, but one is broken and the other is very worn and would probably break if used. Overall it's in pretty good condition for the age. And it is awesome! Measurements: 18 inches tall. A Ladycomet Refinished Dome Top Steamer Trunk Antique Chest w/Straps, Key & Tray
Fabulous Refinished Antique Dome Top Steamer Trunk With Straps& Buckles. Working Lock With Key and Interior Tray This beautiful trunk sure has taken on quite a transformation from the time that we have purchased it. It was very rustic and in dire need of help. Here are the trunk's dimensions: from left to right across the front is 30 inches. From floor to top is approximately 25 inches, and from front edge to back edge is 19 inches. This lovely dome top top should date back to the mid to late 1800's and it appears to be made up of pine and poplar base wood with oak outer slat boards. We have finished the wood with three coats of polyurethane by Minwax. The wood has a nice reddish brown color to it. There are some typical older distress marks on the wooden surfaces. These markings include older nicks and dings along with some slight ... moreareas of discoloration. The majority of the trunks that we refinish have similar distress marks. This one comes with the original working lock. We have found a key that does activate the lock mechanism. The metal parts that make up this nice trunk are not brass and have therefore been brush painted by hand in black and gold leaf. The side handles were missing and have been replaced with Amish made black leather stitched straps. This one was missing the front latches, so we have run a pair of Amish made leather straps with roller buckles up the front and across the top. Instead of having the metal latches, you can use the straps to secure the trunk's top to it's base when buckled in addition to the working lock. As far as repairs go, there were two pieces of hardware missing where the outer slat boards meet. So we have replaced these with some home made pieces that look somewhat similar. There was also a section of an outer slat board missing, and we replaced it with a piece of slat board from a parts trunk. Wonderful NEW ENGLAND chest in original red paint. Found in a coastal Maine home. This rare country chest has the best form, AND SIZE 36" wide, 40" tall, 17.5" deep. The cutout base has a 7" lift and looks to be original height. The beautiful red paint is first coat and there is a coat of old varnish that was probably put on in the late 1800's. I would date this chest to 1850. The hardware appears to be original. Please see photos. The drawers are beautifully dovetailed and the drawer bottoms are original. IT EVEN HAS ORIG KEY! it has a 2 board back. A great piece of folk art in its purest condition. Offered here without reserve is this fantastic Child's or Miniature ca 1840 chest of drawers that has no repairs or restorations aside from the replaced knobs on the drawers(most likely a replaced glass to the mirror as well) It stands but 41 5/8" tall to the finials on the mirror. Whereas the chest alone stands 25 3/8" x 17" wide x 12 1/4" deep. So she's made to 1/2 scale. With fully dovetailed drawers, she's also a menagerie of woods, including cherry, poplar and mahogany(I'm sure there's maple in there somewhere as well) But clearly she's American. What more can I add? Again, there is no reserve, but USPS shipping will run $35 since she's sure to hit the balloon rate charge on shipping.

Unusual Clinton"Wall" trunk manufactured in Clinton. MA about 1900 give or take 10 years. A wall trunk is hinged so that you don't have to pull it away from the wall when you open the lid. Very good antique shape. Tin has two-toned raised grapevine pattern. Brass key shield. Cast iron hinges are stamped with manufacturer's name etc. Trunk has original tray fitted for the wall design with a huge maker's label still intact. I don't know the artist or maker. I purchashed from an estate sale. The colors are blue, green, white, and a yellowish tone. Refinished Civil War Era Dome Top Steamer Trunk Antique Chest Very Nice
I am listing a Beautiful Refinished Antique Dome Top Civil War Era Trunk. This trunk is probably from the mid 1870's period. As some of the hardware is marked 1872. T he trunk's dimensions are from left to right across the front- 26 inches. From floor to top is approximately 19 inches, and from front edge to back edge is 15 inches. I have removed all of the original paper that covered this trunk, inside and out. The trunk is made entirely up of pine wood. The wood has been finished with three coats of clear lacquer. The wood is in great shape with a couple of stress cracks in various places which are quite common on trunks this old. This one comes with the original tray. The front latches are also original and do work. The side handles are really unique and quite rare to see anymore. They are made of wood and are usually broke. These ... morere in excellent shape. Going to the interior, I have finished the interior wood with two coats of clear lacquer. The interior is in pretty good condition considering how old this trunk is. The exterior bottom underneath the trunk has normal wear. It also has the four factory original rollers and slats. Rare Antique-- Rand & Avery Co. ROLLTOP Gun cabinet
This unique roll-top(or roll-front. To be more exact) gun cabinet originates from the Rand, Avery& Co. printing house in Boston, MA. The printing house handled sequentially-numbered railway tickets for the Boston& Maine railroad for years. A fire in 1872 caused the relocation, and this piece probably dates from the period 1872-1889, when the Rand, Avery& Co. was finally auctioned. As clearly seen in the pictures. The following aspects will need to be restored: 1. Top shelf(barrel rack) is broken. But can be restored. 2. Top vertical roll-up panel(front) is intact. But moves up and down with some resistance, probably due to the back panel being bowed in. Can be restored without much difficulty. 3. Back panel is bowed in(possibly from water damage? and out of the rabbeted grooves. I have not forced it back because a full resotoration ... morewould require removing one side and regluing the panel into its tracks. 4. Top finial(center) is missing a chipped out section. Would need minor reshaping to retain original design symmetry. Aside from these three areas which need restoration. The gun cabinet is fully functional and intact. The bottom roll-up functions smoothly without effort. Can be used"as is" or restored for a perfected finish and function. Overall dimensions are 53" tall. 21" wide, and 13" deep at the deepest dimension. The following interested newspaper accounts detail the fire of 1872. And subsequent auction of the company. Boston Daily Globe. 21 Nov 1872: For the third time within ten days[The Great Boston Fire occurred on 8 Nov 1872] the citizens of Boston had their fears excited last evening by the prospect of an extensive conflagration. The building which was thus visited by the destructive element was the extensive printing establishment of Rand. Avery& Co. on Cornhill, at the foot of Washington street. The structure was six stories in height, the upper one being enclosed by one of the recently admired but now detested Mansard roofs. The flames almost immediately made

As you can see from the photos to the left and above. It is lined with a floral patterned paper and has a beautiful lithograph containing dogwood tree blossoms, a child in victorian dress and two children that appear to be Eskimo/Inuit with a dog. One of the children is riding in a sled with the other standing behind probably on the runners. As you can see. This tray is in pretty rough shape. However the art was so beautiful we had to rescue it and hope someone can use it! This tray measures 27 3/4" x 13 1/4" on the very bottom. It then angles up to measure 27 3/4" x 14" The piece measures 7 1/4" at the middle from the bottom ... moreto the highest part of the dome. Antique Stagecoach,Civil War Era, Round Top Trunk, ca 1860
For your consideration is a beautiful anti que round top Civil War era trunk. It is also known as a stagecoach trunk. Based on the lock. The hand forged iron handles and the hand forged nails I believe this trunk dates to 1850-1860. Also please notice the quality. Unusual, hand cut. Dove tailed corners. This trunk is made from six solid pine boards. All sides, top, and bottom are made of a single wide pine board. The top has a couple of small cracks due to the wood losing its moisture over its 150+ years of life. It comes with a working lock but missing the key. The trunk measures 30" wide X 15" deep X 13" high. It does not have a tray as trunks during this time were not equipped with trays. Here you are bidding on an"Antique Blanket Chest Trunk" This is a really great looking chest. It is handmade with large dovetail design. It has a lock mechanism(no key) and original hinges. Border around its bottom. This chest bears some bluish paint that probably once adorned it hence giving it a really nice distressed look. Top opens an closes properly. It measures approximately 41 1/2 inches long x 19 1/2 inches high x 18 1/2 inches deep. I would guess this item to be circa 1875 give or take. It is available for viewing in Asbury Park, New Jersey. Robert Burr 1800's Anitque Salesman Sample Trunk, Or Document Box
For your consideration is this exceptional Robert Burr salesman sample or document box. This appears to be a very rare example. And I believe few have survived to this day. Especially in this condition. Robert Burr was a very important and prolific trunk maker based in Boston, Massachusetts during the 1800's. In my research I found that his shop was initially located at# 3 Hanover street, in Boston's North End. Also the neighborhood of Paul Revere} I can imagine that some of his customers were part of the elite Bostonians of the time. Around 1850 the shop moved to Tremont Street in Boston. Mr. Burr died in 1855 and the shop was taken over by G. Roulstone, and he created his own label. This would mean this piece is a pre-1855 example. It has the original Robert Burr label still attached inside the lid. See photo} It measures 14"L ... morex 8 3/4"W x 6"H. It has a wonderful patina. And rich fabric lining in incredible condition. There is a small stain on the fabric strap that is attached to the body and lid. The outside of the box is adorned with brass studs in a very appealing pattern. The lock and latch are intact. The latch works but the key is missing. There are some dings associated with use, as well as a few stains. The bottom is a little stained and there is some peeling. PLEASE NOTE: Most of the pictures were taken inside with artificial lighting. They do make the wood appear somewhat lighter than it is. But they also reveal the signs of use with more detail. The best picture. Taken without flash or additional lighting} is the first one of it laying on a beige carpet. I am not an antique expert but try to describe my listings with detail. Rare Antique Hide Covered Round Top Trunk 30" - 1831!
Rare and Rustic. Antique Hide Covered Round Top Trunk- 1831! This amazing trunk dates back to when Andrew Jackson was president of the United States! Trunk is lined with newspaper from the Christian Intelligencer( April. 1831) The Christian Intelligencer was in publication between 1830 and 1920. It was printed and published in New York for an association of members of the Protestant Reformed Dutch Church. The trunk is highly adorned with brass nail heads. Steel plates and various types of leather. Hand forged iron handles on each end and a nice simple lock show off some serious craftsmanship. An old gouge repair is seen above the lock which was sewn with sinew. Condition is very good for the age and unbelievable journey this item has traveled. Uncertain what wood this is. Lid is still very straight with no major bowing or warping. Much of ... morethe soft. Deerskin hide has worn off, though some is still present in places. Unfortunately, the hide on this trunk has been peeled off, cut and removed in places. At one time the large brass nails spelled out the owners initials on the lid: SB" The hide is missing from the following areas: top middle section. the entire back and right side and the lower left side. We are guessing someone was looking to refurbish it many years ago? That is why these trunks are so rare. the ugly ducklings of history that get lost forever. There are no keys for the unmarked lock. The right front edge of the lid has split away slightly. Hinges were made of leather( present but long broken) Please see our pictures for more information on detail and condition. The newspaper articles are fascinating with articles about ship sinkings. West Point court martials and the Cholera outbreak beginning to kill the Iroquois in Ohio.
