This BLUE BIRD RED CEDAR CHEST has come down thru our family. It has kept both heirlooms and favored treasures free from harm no matter where the chest was stored. The red cedar lining is in amazing condition-clean and full of the wonderful cedar fragrance. It is made of hardwood and is very sturdy. It has a lock but I do not have the key. The dark cherry finish is original but crackled(as shown in the photos. It would be well worth refinishing or painting this piece. The inside needs absolutely nothing! 1930's vintage Caswell-Runyan cedar chest
The Caswell Runyan Company. Which began life in 1907 when it was founded by J W Caswell and Winifred Runyan, was the first of its kind to offer readymade cedar chests as a commercial product. Manufacturing took place in Huntington. Indiana, and the firm hoped to corner the cedar chest market at the point of its inception. The plant became the second largest wood-working plant in Indiana at its primacy. Caswell cedar chests were a patented product. They reflected the fact that people were moving away from creating their own furniture in favour of buying ready made goods. At first. The company employed approximately two dozen people– a figure which had increased to 600 by 1924, by which time Caswell Runyan cedar chests were being sold across the United States. This rate of growth is quite remarkable, bearing in mind the company forewent a national ... moreadvertising campaign. In 1929 Caswell Runyan merged with Utah Radio Products Co. a loud speaker manufacturer) of Chicago. Bringing together speakers and cabinets to complete a radio reception combination. Catalogue numbers. Patent numbers and lot numbers were printed on Caswell Runyan cedar chests. These can tell collectors a great deal about age and value. One or all of these details can be found stamped lightly onto the top edge of one of the trays. Aged chests can be professionally restored– a process that will restore some or all of their value. Vintage Lane cedar hope chest ready for refurbish USA made With replacement lock
LOCAL PICKUP ONLY This item has been recalled because of the locking mechanism. But I've acquired a replacement lock from Lane and will include it in the sale. This chest is a perfect candidate for restoration. The Lane cedar chest may look like it needs a lot of work. But the inside is fairly immaculate. Aside from a split in the upper drawer(see pictures) that doesn't affect the integrity at all, the inside of the chest is in perfect shape. The outside needs veneer work, and I've tried to detail in the pictures all the places where the veneer is chipped away. Still this isn't anything you couldn't fix with a trip to Home Depot. There are also scratches on the surface. And spots on the top where a lot of the veneer has worn away. There is a small bit of paint splatter on the top. Two of the rear hinges have been replaced ... morewith modern hinges, and the locking mechanism will have to be replaced(Lane will send you a new lock) All in all. Wonderful vintage. Hand-made solid cedar dome top/ hump back storage chest or train trunk. This vintage chest is handmade of ¾” solid cedar and smells wonderful when you open it. It weighs in at around 12 lbs. unboxed. Has a pieced, domed lid with two handles that are screwed in on either side to make it easy to carry. It has two gold-tone hinges on the backside and measures 18” long x 14” wide x 12.5” high at the very top of the domed lid. The lid itself is made with 14 separate pieces of hand-beveled cedar pieces, secured with small finishing nails in order to form the domed lid. This one MAY be made of Mahogany wood? not Cedar. It has no odor of cedar on the interior, but the outside bottom of the box has a faint odor of cedar. It is simply marked LANE on the inside of the lid. On the top of the lid there is a lovely heart-shaped decal, which at first glance it looks like inlaid wood.
