The hardware ... moreis gorgeous! The shape of the trunk is great! At first glance. It looks like a gold painted textured tin exterior with black hardware. Upon closer examination, it looks like the trunk is wood covered with textured tin. A magnet will attach to all the tin and all the hardware. The arch accents and straight accents on the sides appear to be wood(the magnet does not stick but slides to the metal areas) The bottom has seen better days. The tin shows wear at the corner and at the bottom edges of the sides. I tried to show this in the pictures. The bottom has been covered with felt. There is no tin used on the bottom-it appears to be antique wood covered by felt. The interior has been lined with a cream colored polyester lining fabric. The lining was applied with upholstery tacks and a glue gun. Along the two short side there is a ridge of wood inside the trunk which probably held a tray at one time. In one corner. I was able to pull back the fabric and take a photograph of what looks like the original lining paper. All the nails in the top and sides look like they are original except 3 philips head screws that are used in one of the back hinges. I was trying to figure out why there were air holes on the sides when I realized that the handles are missing. The beauty of the shape is the main attraction. Measures 28" wide x 17" deep x 18" tall that peaks to 20" Very pretty piece. Looks like with a little work the original splendor of this piece would be a delight to own. These trunks are also described as Dome Topped or Hump Back trunks. No returns on this item. Local Pick up is prefered in Raleigh. NC. Shipping will be calculated by actual weight. But I am having a really hard time deciphering it, it appears to be someone's name and then a place in New York. The trunk does have railroad transportation labels on both sides of the trunk. The trunk does have some wear as you can see, original front lock hardware is missing and it does have surface loss. Some of the paint has alligatored a bit on the sides as you can see from the photos. Trunk measures 35.25 inches wide by 17.25 inches deep by 17 inches tall. It has labels for New York Central Railroad and Westcott express one side and the other side has a very partial label and from what I can tell it is in French. The front of the trunk may read Hauve(France)New York. I think this is a really nice piece, I think it has a good folk art look to it and great to find it with original green paint. Ladycomet Refinished Flat Top Angle Top Steamer Trunk Antique Chest w/Key&Tray
Beautiful Refinished Flat Top Wall Trunk With Working Lock& Key. Interior Compartment Area. And Interior Tray Here is a very unusual fancy refinished flat top steamer trunk from around 1900 or so. Here are the following measurements: from left to right across the front is 28 1/2 inches. From floor to top is 22 inches, and from front edge to back edge is 18 inches. It is unusual in which the top and back and front slat boards are angled at about 45 degrees. We have only had about four of these over the past thirteen years to refinish and that would be out of around 1500 trunks. We have removed some of the metal from between the slat boards to expose the wood underneath. This beautiful trunk appears to be made up of pine base wood with ash or oak outer slat boards. The wood has been finished with three coats of polyurethane. There are some ... moretypical older distress marks on the wood. These character marks include older nicks and dings. Mostly concentrated on to the outer slat boards, and there are a couple of stress cracks. The majority of all trunks that we refinish have these type of markings. This great trunk comes with the original signed working lock. It is signed, Yale& Towne Mfg Co Stamford Conn U.S.A. We have matched up a key that does activate the lock mechanism. This trunk maker used a very nice amount of nice hardware on this trunk. A lot of it has embossed patterns to the metal. The front latches are original and they have a big number"3" at the top of them which we have highlighted in black paint. The metal parts making up this trunk are not brass, so we have hand painted the metal in black and gold leaf. The trunk maker also did a good job of running vertical and horizontal outer slat boards on this trunk, especially on the sides. It is not very often that you have two vertical slat boards and a horizontal slat board running on the sides of the trunk. Anyhow, it gives it a nice, unique appearance. The side handles have been replaced with sturdy Amish made black leather stitched straps.

The history of Eagle Lock Company is very interesting. ... moreWritten accounts differ as to when the company was started in either 1832 or 1833. The company was incorporated in 1854. At one time. Eagle was the largest trunk and cabinet lock maker in the world. They exported their locks to the West Indies and South America. The company at one time had three manufacturing plants and 1800 employees. Eventually the company was sold to people who lack knowledge about the lock business and proceeded to make many bad decisions. Barely holding on in the early 70's another individual bought the company from Penn-Akron Corp. Which had gone bankrupt. But by 1974 it was out of business after losing a bid to the Lori Corporation for a large order for cylinders for the U.S. Postal Service. We have refinished hundreds of trunks, each one with the craftsmanship that we have learned from growing up around our grandparents watching them run and refinish furniture in their antique shop. This particular trunk is a very nice, clean refinished flat top steamer trunk from the late 1800's. To begin refinishing this particular trunk we took all the paper off from the inside. We then removed the canvas from between the slat boards to expose the wood underneath. This gorgeous trunk is made up of pine wood with oak slats. Once we removed the canvas we sanded all the wood and then applied tung oil as a finish. After much research we have found ... morethat by using tung oil, not only does it not leave such a strong odor as other finishes, but it also penetrates the wood preventing the wood from drying out so quickly. On this trunk are two new Amish leather handles and two new latches to keep the lid secure. Also on the lid of this trunk you will find the original trunk stay. This trunk also has the original working lock with the original key. Due to the age of the trunk, having both lock and key is a rarity. The fancy metal hardware on this trunk has also been repainted by hand in black and gold leaf. This trunk also has new leather straps to help keep the lid fastened and to bring back the originality of the trunk. Many trunks this age had straps such as those that we replaced to help keep items secured when traveling. As in any trunk of this age there are a few signs of wear but that is to be expected. The interior of the trunk is very clean. Dropping down to the bottom of the trunk we have also applied tung oil to the bottom to give it a new refinished look and repainted the metal black. Up for bid is this awesome vintage steamer trunk. This amazing wardrobe-style chest normally stands upright on rollers and is pulled by a single handle on the top. The trunk is intended to travel on its wheels. But it also sits nicely on its side if desired. Once opened. The trunk reveals four drawers of varying sizes on one side. On the other side, a drape hangs over a small closet. A covered small suitcase box holds wooden hangers to be used in the closet- it fits into place to make a storage space at the bottom of the closet area. The top of the closet opens up. See pics. The interior of the trunk is all nicely lined. Including the drawers. The interior hardware and hangers are intact. There is a lock on the top drawer, I do not see a key for it, although the exterior lock on the trunk comes with its key. Based on the information on the ... moreexterior lock hardware. It was made by the Eagle Lock Company, Terryville, Conn USA, no. 56K12. I could find no other manufacturer identifiers on the trunk. The leather handle on the trunk is stamped with the number 16. The chest is black with what I would presume to be brass hardware on the exterior. The trunk is in very nice shape. The trunk is available for pickup only in Birmingham. I believe the box to be 1940 s.The lock is working well and the key is present.Made solidly from brass and steel.Possible fire proof?The box weight is 7 kg. 15 cm x 14 cm x 25 cm. With thick walls& HEAVY! The handle is not fixed and moves up and down well. Strong hinges.I have left the box as it is, i have not over cleaned it or used brass cleaning products on it.It could be restored if the new owner wishes?or left natural I have not seen one like this.
