The hardware ... moreis gorgeous! The shape of the trunk is great! At first glance. It looks like a gold painted textured tin exterior with black hardware. Upon closer examination, it looks like the trunk is wood covered with textured tin. A magnet will attach to all the tin and all the hardware. The arch accents and straight accents on the sides appear to be wood(the magnet does not stick but slides to the metal areas) The bottom has seen better days. The tin shows wear at the corner and at the bottom edges of the sides. I tried to show this in the pictures. The bottom has been covered with felt. There is no tin used on the bottom-it appears to be antique wood covered by felt. The interior has been lined with a cream colored polyester lining fabric. The lining was applied with upholstery tacks and a glue gun. Along the two short side there is a ridge of wood inside the trunk which probably held a tray at one time. In one corner. I was able to pull back the fabric and take a photograph of what looks like the original lining paper. All the nails in the top and sides look like they are original except 3 philips head screws that are used in one of the back hinges. I was trying to figure out why there were air holes on the sides when I realized that the handles are missing. The beauty of the shape is the main attraction. Measures 28" wide x 17" deep x 18" tall that peaks to 20" Very pretty piece. Looks like with a little work the original splendor of this piece would be a delight to own. But I am having a really hard time deciphering it, it appears to be someone's name and then a place in New York. The trunk does have railroad transportation labels on both sides of the trunk. The trunk does have some wear as you can see, original front lock hardware is missing and it does have surface loss. Some of the paint has alligatored a bit on the sides as you can see from the photos. Trunk measures 35.25 inches wide by 17.25 inches deep by 17 inches tall. It has labels for New York Central Railroad and Westcott express one side and the other side has a very partial label and from what I can tell it is in French. The front of the trunk may read Hauve(France)New York. I think this is a really nice piece, I think it has a good folk art look to it and great to find it with original green paint. This is U.S. Navy brass lock. It is marked on the front of the lock 14 Federal USN. It also says four brass levers. GENUINE SOLID BRASS" It has a little opening and closing key door. Please zoom in on the pics because this best describes this lock. It is in really nice shape and it comes with one key. The back of the lock says W. Bell and Sons LTD. Philadephia, Penna. Locksmiths by appointment and has the word"drain" It closes and opens with ease with the key. It would look nice on a old trunk or even a new one. It also would look good in anyones lock collection. Norwegian Chest SKELETON KEY Open Barrel Iron Trunk ANTIQUE 18th 19th Century
Antique Hand-Forged Skeleton Key I believe this hand-forged key was made for a Norwegian rosemaled chest. Many heirloom chests made in the 1700's and early 1800's came over with the Scandinavian immigrants who settled in my state of North Dakota. I bought the key from a man who had found it in the wild. Covered in thick layers of rust. It has cleaned up very well and is now a joy to hold and examine. The key features a slightly off-center construction. It is made of iron with streaks of copper. The hollow barrel was formed by rolling a thin sheet of metal and the seam is still visible. The ring on the end is heart-shaped. The key measures 4-1/8" long. Beautifully refinished. Chalk painted in a warm. Light gray, distressed, and clear waxed. Chest is in excellent, vintage condition. Very solid and sturdy. Wooden handles adorn each end, with a locking lid and original skeleton key. Metal bands with raised knobs are the perfect accents going down the top and sides of the chest. Plenty of storage inside this cedar chest. Manufactured by Universal Cabinet Company in Chicago, Illinois I have painted hundreds of pieces of furniture and sold them locally off line.
