Formerly a dresser base, having a pistachio green over rhubarb stained and painted finish and original metal scalloped cup handles, the carcass comprising of a moulded rectangular top above an arrangement of eight drawers and central cupboard comprising two frieze drawers and central cupboard door flanked by two banks of two short drawers to a plinth base survives from the latter part of the nineteenth century. Based on 40 years experience restoring trunks I would date this tool chest to the late 1800's to early 1900's which makes this trunk a 100 plus years old- a true antique. This trunk/chest was structurally sound when the restoration started and the wood bottom is in good solid condition. Has had multiple coats of clear applied. The trunk has the two original hinges which are heavy duty, tight and work well. The interior has been removed. Two metal handles were installed on the tool chest. The lid closes well. Measuring 27ins(69cms) wide x 9ins(23cms) high x 11ins(27cms) wide, it is a traditionally constructed chest with nicely interlaced corner joints, a couple of hinged clasps to the front and two sound, solid brass, hinges to the rear. It is finished with an antique wax over the original dark varnish and has a nice sheen to it. It is constructed with pine sections to the front. JAPANESE MEIJI PERIOD ANTIK MINI CHEST TANSU SILVER crane helmet pine samurai
This is a phenomenal miniature Japanese chest or tansu and dates to the Meiji period circa 1890's. The front doors. Lock, knobs are silver and have a nice patina- The standing Crane(tsuru) is carved in high relief and pines, flying crane in 1 dimensional relief. The overall area of this chest is I believe a textured weave of reeds and has a lacquered finish. I have shown a small chip on backside and it looks like organic material. The panels(shakudo copper shibuichi brass) are all carved in relief and show various good luck symbols and/or subject matter from Japanese history/ mythology. Koi, Kabuto, Shichi-fukujin, sakura, matsu, kakejiku, shakuhachi w/mask, kanji, etc. The 3 drawers are black lacquered w/the silver pulls. It is amazing to me how something of this quality/uniqueness is thought up let alone created. the Japanese artisans ... morewere and still are truly the best in the world- IN MY OPINION. UNUSUAL VINTAGE FOOTED PINE JEWELRY BOX or TRINKET CHEST
This is a very cute jewelry or trinket box. I think the wood is pine but you be the judge. The oblong octagon/rectangle shape sits on two"table leg" type feet. The inside is lined in a feather-print velveteen and a mirror is inside the lid. This box was probably hand made. I picked it up at an estate sale and do not know how old it might be. The chest has the original working lock and key and the strap hinges and side handles are blacksmith made wrought iron. Note the beautiful large round head hand forged strap hinge rosehead nail attachments. There are also square wooden pegs throughout. The interior is solid and has a"candle box" to the right. The dimensions are 42" wide by 25" tall and 21" front to back. Also note the quality touch of the small round wooden projectiles in the rear to keep the chest from hitting the wall and making the lid difficult to open. There is one rosehead nail that has an old replacement in the very rear. Also. The floor inside the chest is solid although the underside that rests on the floor shows wood loss from a decade ago. This chest came from the barn of my family farm in Vermont that dated back to 1776. The farm, not the chest) I have enjoyed this chest and carried it around for 50 years. The inside of of most antique iceboxes were usually lined with galvanized metal, zinc, slate, porcelain, or wood. The ice box literally began as a wooden box. In the 19th and early 20th century the iceman delivered ice for the first ice boxes- the predecessor of the modern day refrigerator. RARE AUTHENTIC 1800's MORMON Pine Wood Sugar Chest Square Nails Ice Box ORIGINAL
It is our pleasure to bring to auction this fine example of American History. Rare and authentic sugar chest which was later about 1830's converted into an ice chest. Entirely comprised of pine wood, masterfully dovetailed along with square nails throughout to many to picture. This item was a rare item to have in the late 1700's to early 1800's, used as a sugar chest for years under lock and key as sugar was such a prized commodity in those years. Then in the early 1800's converted into another prized item to have owned in the 1800's the ice chest. This item was in the same family for over three generations an LDS Mormon family, one can only assume it has some Utah roots with the early Utah Pioneers. The handles on each side are iron hand forged and in great shape, this piece has been very well cared for and preserved ... moreover the years. Dimensions are 28" tall by 24" depth by 23 1/2" wide, very substantial. As most know these types of items were never thrown away they would find a new purpose as shown here in this rare example of early American History. The bun feet are hand turned. Construction is very fine, the grates are original to this piece with ornate design and the ice box is in working condition, no holes or damage that we could find. The knobs will show some wear and a few repairs over the years certainly nothing to distract from the value in any significant manner, overall in remarkable condition for 200+ years. The feet will show some splits but again very sturdy without wobble they appear to have been made from a hardwood for durability and the weight. It is a true honor to own any type of early Mormon Pioneer item they are extremely RARE and very difficult to find in any condition as most are in Museums. Antique Pine Blanket Chest with Butternut Trim, circa 1800
Circa 1800 Wide Pine Plank Blanket Chest. Missing glove box, but enhanced with a Butternut moulding trim on the lid and skirting. The old milk blue paint makes this a very attractive large dovetailed original chest. The hinges,although correct from that period, are not the original set. The measurements are 18" tall, 20" in width and 46" in length. We are in Central NY, so unless you are willing to pay for crating, the only way to get this chest will be a mutual meeting. We are willing to travel to Albany or Binghamton or Utica areas for pick-up/delivery. If you are planning a visit to the Central NY during the summer months, we would hold the chest until then.
