A Ladycomet Refinished Flat Top Steamer Trunk Antique Chest w/2 Locks,Key,& Tray
Beautiful Refinished Large Antique Flat Top Steamer Trunk With Two Working Locks& a Key and Interior Tray This one has surely come a very long way from when we purchased it. This one was completely painted pastel green on the exterior like they used to do in the 1970's with a lot of furniture items. We spent a heck of a lot of time stripping over 99% of the ugly paint off of the exterior. The trunk should date back to around 1900 or so. It is quite unusual in which it has the double locks. This beautiful trunk is made up of pine base wood with oak or ash outer slat boards. We have finished the wood with three coats of polyurethane by Minwax. The wood has turned out to be a nice tannish brown color on the base wood and a tannish color to the slat boards. The wood is in pretty good condition although there are some scrapes and nicks ... moreon the wood in various places along with some hairline stress cracks. All of these markings are very common on most all of the trunks that we refinish. When we received this trunk. The lower locks were cut off. So we have installed two vintage Eagle Lock Company locks, both of which will work with the one key provided. The upper receiving part for the locks on this trunk are original indicating that we have replaced the locks with similar ones. Here are the following dimensions: from left to right across the front is 28 1/2 inches, from floor to top is 20 inches, and from front edge to back edge is 17 1/4 inches. The metal parts that make up this trunk are not brass and have been brush painted by hand in black and gold leaf. The side handles were missing and have been replaced with Amish made black leather stitched straps. All of our leather for these trunks is obtained from an Amish man in an Amish community near our home here in Pennsylvania. This beautiful flat top trunk which is a true flat top with no factory arch, did have a leather strap that ran up the front and across the top. I picked this up at a Pa. estate sale this past weekend. I couldn't believe the original. Working key was still here. It's a flat top with the slightest raise in the center, so, not completely flat. It's adorned with wood slats. Take notice of the stenciling on the leather trim attached with studs. On the inside you will see the original paper lining. This is in fair condition and the most unique retro pattern I've ever come across on a trunk. The pattern is orange. 3 shades of green, and black. There is also a unique texture to the exterior of the trunk with embossed floral pattern that is separate from the printed color floral pattern. The trunk still has both original handles. The latches both work but sometimes you need to use a bit of muscle to open them as they stick a bit. The inside mechanism for the lock is missing. The bottom of the trunk has some deeper scratches then the rest of the trunk. There are minor scratches through out the trunk as well as shown. Some hardware pieces show ... moresome rust. Nice Refinished Antique Flat Top Steamer Trunk With Working Lock& Key Here is a nice refinished steamer trunk from around 1900 or so. This one has a very fancy working lock. Here are the trunk's dimensions: from left to right across the front is 32 inches. From floor to top is 23 1/2 inches, and from front edge to back edge is 20 1/4 inches. This trunk is made up of pine base wood with oak or ash outer slat boards. The wood has been finished with three coats of polyurethane by Minwax to protect it and make it look nice. The wood is in pretty good condition considering the age of this trunk and there are some typical stress cracks in the base wood. We have shown a close up picture of some of these stress cracks on the top. The majority of the trunks have similar stress cracks. This trunk maker did a nice job of running metal banding ... moreon this trunk. By doing so, it gives the trunk a nice wooden sectioned appearance. Some of the metal banding was missing, so we have filled these areas with glue to make up for the missing banding. The front latches are original cast iron ones and do work properly since the springs are intact. The side handles have been replaced with Amish made black leather stitched straps. The metal parts on this trunk are not brass and have therefore been brush painted by hand in black and gold leaf. Someone has added a lock hasp on the front of the trunk next to the fancy lock. We decided to leave it there since it appears to be fairly old and you could use a padlock with this hasp to secure the lid of the trunk to the base in addition to the fancy working lock. The lock is fancy in which it has embossed and carved patterns on it. There is a close up picture showing this unique lock. We did match up a key that does work with this lock. We are calling this trunk a flat top, although this trunk has a very slight factory arch to the top which is noticeable in ths close up side view picture. Refinished antique steamer trunk circa late 1890’s. Early 1900’s with original hardware. This has a wonderful flat top surface, perfect use for a table or at the bottom of a bed. Trunk is in good condition, measures approximately 17 1/2" x 20 1/2" x 32" with side leather handles worn off but pieces attached. Clasp hinges lock in place, keys not included. 4 metal plated rollers on bottom may have had wood around them. Top insert with compartment measures 12 3/4" W x 5 1/4" Deep. Name identification marked on front is slightly visible, assumably owner of trunk. Number marked on bottom in red barely legible, possibly for traveling purposes. Refinished antique wooden steamer trunk circa late 1890’s. Early 1900’s with original hardware. This has a wonderful flat top surface, perfect use for a table or at the bottom of a bed. Plus it is nice and roomy, excellent for extra storage. The inside has been stripped of the original paper. Brass colored hardware and front lock, no key. Original handles in tact, which is rare as most broke off over time. The wood has been finished in a nice warm medium pine color with a not to shiny, not to dull, just right finish. The metal hardware has not been repainted, only cleaned. I like to leave the hardware in its found state. Rear hinges are in working order and original inside hardware holds lid up perfectly. Cleaned stained and has 2 coats of laquer. The wood is slick and smooth, you will not find many trunks with as smooth finish as this trunk. Physically it is in good condition but obviously it has been used through the years. A.E. Meek Steamer Trunk. Very Old, Very Interesting. The trunk is sturdy. It can support over 200 pounds. As you can see in the photo. It’s reinforced with wood on the outside. It appears that the canvas on the outside of the trunk was painted later then decorative flowers were added. It was manufactured by A.E. Meek Trunk and Bag Company. Denver, Colorado. I don’t know when it was made, but the A.E. Meek label inside the trunk says that their Denver phone number is 1216. There are 4 rollers on the bottom and all in good shape. There is a removable wooden tray that sits over the main storage area. On the outside. One leather handle is in good shape, the other has a couple of remnants of the leather handle. This chest may be a Jenny Lind(the top of the line for its time) due to the keyhole in front(no key included; has a lock. But whoever had the key locked the latch-trunk still opens and shuts, just doesn't lock without key, but has latches on each side) but I can not positively identify it as a Jenny Lind. I am unsure what type of wood this chest is made of, but it is dated circa 1880-1910 due to the embossed metal coverings, and the fact that the low flat tops were created beginning in 1880. This is a very hard to find 3-slat topped chest, as most for sale are only 2 slats. It has hardwood staves with metal trim and added hardware. Antique ca.1885 Flat Top Metal Steamer Trunk With Unusual Interior
This is a ca. 1885 Antique refinished metal covered flat top trunk. All parts are original. It is 28.5"x 17"x 20"tall and weighs 40 lbs. It is sometimes called a monitor or waterfall trunk. The lock is marked Pat`d April 15. 1879 and the slat caps are marked Pat`d March 1880. The key has been lost. It is clad with metal with oak slats. It is possible that it was made by Charles Taylor, New York. The interior is very unusual. It has a double tray hinged system that slides out of way on steel runners. The trays are finished pine and the inside is finish with a lovely floral print. It can be pick-up or you can make arragements to have it shipped. Look carefully at the photos. No returns. This is an absolutely gorgeous antique steamer trunk. As you can see in the photos the wood really accentuates the black color. The wood is beautiful. Much of the leather remains although both side straps have rotted away which is very common in a trunk of this age. The metal accents. Rivets and corner pieces are very ornate. In it's day this was a very expensive trunk. One hing on the back is in need of slight repair. A Ladycomet Primitive Early Refinished Flat Top Steamer Trunk Antique Chest
Charming Early Primitive Refinished Antique Flat Top Steamer Trunk Here is a nice refinished flat top steamer trunk from the mid to late 1800's. Here are the trunk's dimensions: from left to right across the front is 32 inches. From floor to top is 16 inches, and from front edge to back edge is 17 1/2 inches. This one is a more primitive style trunk in which there is more wood showing and less fancy metal hardware. This one still has the Jenny Lind influence in which there are the small brass rosettes or buttons on the thin metal banding at the sides. The trunk is made up of poplar base wood with oak outer slat boards on the top. The wood has been finished with three coats of polyurethane by Minwax. There are some typical older nicks and dings on the wood in various places. This trunk comes with the original lock which has been remounted ... morewith screws. The lock does not work since the top engagement piece or latch that swings down into the lock is missing. The lock is AS IS since this part is missing. The side handles have some wear, but were in good enough condition to keep. They are brown leather stitched straps. This trunk might serve nicely as a coffee table since it does have a flat top. These trunks can also be used to store collectibles like Civil War items or coins within. A real common way to use a trunk like this is to store clothing and other personal belongings within it, especially in a bedroom at the foot of the bed. Going to the interior, the wood is totally rough cut boards. There was glue residue on these boards which held the paper lining in place. The glue residue was light colored, so we had to stain the interior wood dark to try to cover up the lighter glue areas. The interior is dark colored with some glue areas showing and has rough cut boards. A nice picture of a girl holding her pet cat has been added to the underside of the top. Beautiful Refinished Flat Top Steamer Antique Trunk & Tray w/Lock & Keys
Beautiful Refinished Antique Flat Top Trunk with Working Lock and 2 keys and original tray. This is a very nice. Clean refinished flat top steamer trunk from the late 1800's. To begin refinishing this particular trunk we had to take off the canvas on the outside and all the paper from the inside. This gorgeous trunk is made up of pine wood with oak slats. Once we removed the canvas and paper we sanded all the wood and then applied polyurethane by Minwax. On this trunk are two new Amish tan leather handles. Also on the trunk are the two original latches to keep the lid secure and the original stay to help keep the lid open when needed. We also attached a new lock with two working keys. The fancy metal hardware on this trunk has also been repainted by hand in black and gold leaf. This is a higher end trunk as there is leather on all the ... moreedges. As in any trunk of this age there are a few signs of wear but that is to be expected. The interior of the trunk is very clean. We have also applied polyurethane to the bottom to give it a new refinished look. The size of this trunk is perfect for its use as a hope chest to keep all your precious belongings in. This beautiful trunk would look very nice placed at the foot of a bed. It could also be used by a college student to store things in. The size of this trunk measures 34 1/2"length x 20"width x 13" height. The two of us love refinishing trunks bringing back the beauty into a piece from the past. Very Nice Fancy Refinished Belber Brand Antique Flat Top Steamer Trunk With Straps& Buckles. Manufacturer's Brass Tag, and Brass Working Lock With Key Here is a refinished signed Belber trunk from around the early 1900's. This one sure is fancy with lots of metal hardware all over it. Here are the trunk's dimensions: from left to right across the front is 35 inches. From floor to top is 14 inches, and from front edge to back edge is 20 1/2 inches. This trunk is made up of the original laminate from the factory. It is some type of pressed composition over some type of wood. We have given the laminated areas a nice dark reddish mahogany color and then polyurethane over the mahogany stain. The edge banding with all the nails in it appears to be also a type of composition and it is a brownish color which we have freshened up. ... moreThis beautiful flat top has the brass manufacturer's tag. It says, Belber Make" Philadephia, New York, Chicago" They must have had a few factories producing their trunks. This Belber trunk comes with the original brass working lock. We have semi polished the brass lock and matched up a key that does work properly in this lock. The remaining metal parts on this trunk are not brass and have been brush painted by hand in black and gold leaf. The front latches are also original and in good working condition since the springs are still intact. The side handles were missing and have been replaced with black leather straps. This lovely trunk originally had leather straps. They were missing, so we have run a pair of nice Amish made leather straps with roller buckles up the front, across the top, and down the back in the same location where the original ones were. These leather straps with roller buckles are functional and in addition to the lock and latches, they help secure the trunk's top to it's base when buckled. A rare and wonderful trunk in deep navy blue with orange stripes and initials. The stripe and initials were custom painted so the owners could quickly identify their trunk. In excellent condition this trunk has everything from original travel stickers to all original inserts. Leather and brass trim. The only thing missing is the key. The trunk probably dates to the earlier part of the twentieth century. The trunk is very heavy and large mostly likely made of laminated wood. It is 25 inches across the front and back surfaces and 22 inches tall and 22 inches deep. A brass plaque on the top corner proclaims it was made for Lord& Taylor.
