ANTIQUE STEAMER TRUNK VINTAGE VICTORIAN STORAGE TRAVEL CHEST RESTORED REFINISHED
Up for sale is this beautiful restored large antique victorian roll top steamer trunk with key. It measures 35" long by 22 1/4" wide and 25" tall. The original canvas that wrapped this trunk has been removed and the wood was sanded. Stained with minwax"cherry" then sealed with two coats of spar urethane(light sand in between coats) The interior lining has been removed and the wood was sanded then stained. The trunk shows obvious aesthetic signs of age but these details give it the perfect patina and look. The structure of this trunk is solid and it is functional as a coffee table, blanket chest, etc. A great piece with tons of character that will be the focal point of any room. Antique(circa 1890- 1910) steamer trunk by one of the luxury brands of its time. Beals& Selkirk. The company was founded in 1889 in Detroit before relocating to Wyandotte. Michigan a few years later. The trunks produced by Beals and Selkirk were considered to be amongst the finest of their time. These trunks were built to withstand the toughest of handling. They were reinforced with leather or metal corners, straps, bumpers. handles, hinges, and locks. After the San Francisco earthquake in 1906 left thousands of people homeless, Beals and Selkirk sent 6 carloads of trunks. They also mass produced a simpler style for the army during WWI and WWII. By the 1920's, the Beals and Selkirk company shifted from trunks to handbags, appliance covers, and doctors' bags. This particular trunk is is good working order. Nice Refinished Flat Top Steamer Trunk Antique Chest w/ org. lock & key& label
Beautiful Refinished Antique Flat Top Steamer Trunk with Original Working Lock and Original Working Key My husband and I have refinished over 130 trunks. Each one is a treasure of its own. The history of each trunk dates back as early as the 1 800's. Each has its own unique story. While owning a trunk of your own. You can enhance the tradition and legacy with your own family. This is a very nice decorative refinished flat top steamer trunk. The particular d imensions for this are 32" length. 19" width and 21" height. This beautiful trunk would make a great trunk for a college student to keep stuff in, or for someone to store old photo books in. To begin the restoration of this trunk we began by taking off the old canvas covering and all paper on the inside. Next we sanded the wood on the entire trunk. On the outside and ... moreon the inside. After all the sanding was done, we then applied coats of Polyurethane as the finishing touch to give the wood a nice shine. The trunk has some typical small stress marks and small stress cracks which are common in wood of this age. Next we painted all metal parts of the trunk with a black or gold leaf paint. We then attached 2 new Amish made tan leather hand l es to this beautiful trunk. With this particular trunk we were able to keep the original lock and key and they are in good working condition. Working the way up to the lid of this trunk. You will find the original stay to keep the lid open when wanted. Also on the lid you will find the original label. This is in wonderful condition and very readable. We included a picture to show you the label. We love finding these on trunks, it fills us in on a little bit of the trunk's history. Finally on the bottom of the trunk we painted all the black on that too. Also on the bottom are the four original casters that roll smoothly while moving the trunk. Alligator Embossed Steamer Trunk 1872-1900 This slightly domed trunk with simulated alligator“hide” dates from 1872 to 1900 based on its patent dates and appointments. It is constructed of pine box framing with horizontal hardwood slats. The decorative tin is embossed with an alligator pattern and the trunk is secured with steel. Tin and brass hardware. Although its exact age is undetermined. The trunk’s hasp hardware shows a patent date of July 9, 72. Therefore, it’s fair to estimate from its overall construction and appointments that this steamer probably was manufactured between 1872 and 1900. A unique feature of this trunk is that the two front hasps have small levers that allow the lid to be secured in the closed position. The lock tongue is missing, and was not replaced in the restoration, but the lock plate when cleaned revealed brilliant ... morebrass details. This trunk is lightweight and measures 24 inches long. 14 inches wide, and 15 inches high at its crown. In the refinishing. The plain paper that lined the interior and lid was removed and the inside was cleaned, sanded and finished with two coats of clear satin polyurethane to preserve the natural color of the pine. A new floor of cedar was installed and a new tray was built and stained Early American. The exterior was refinished by sanding and wire brushing the tin. Then treating it with rust inhibitor and painted with Rustoleum Satin Black. The hardwood slats were cleaned, sanded, and finished with tung oil, with steel wool between coats to enhance the finish. The embossed“alligator” tin was cleaned and wiped with Minwax Dark Walnut stain to restore its original finish. It was then sealed with tung oil to create its natural look. THE 2 HOLES ARE A LITTLE OVER 3/4" DIAMETER AND IN A HEAVILY REINFORCED AREA ABOUT 1" THICK. THERE ARE 2 LEATHER STRAPS MISSING ON THE SIDE WITH THE LATCHES. A HANDLE WAS INSTALLED WITH WOOD SCREWS ON THE BACK ABOVE THE OAK TRIM LEAVING 4 HOLES 1/8" DIAMETER. THE FACE SHOWS AN INDENTATION BUT IT IS NOT AS BAD AS THE PHOTO SHOWS. THE METAL CORNER TRIM IS ALL THERE BUT ONE RIVET IS MISSING. SOME OF THE OAK HAS SEPARATED SLIGHTLY FROM THE CORNERS BUT ARE STILL INTACT. Beautiful Refinished Dome Top Steamer Trunk with Working Lock and key and full Interior My husband and I have refinished over 135 trunks. Each one is a treasure of its own. The history of each trunk dates back as early as the 1 800's. Each has its own unique story. While owning a trunk of your own. You can enhance the tradition and legacy with your own family. This is absolutely beautiful very nice decorative refinished dome top hump back steamer trunk from the late 1800's. The particular d imensions for this are 32" length. 19" width and 23" height. This beautiful trunk would make a great trunk for a college student to keep stuff in, or for someone to store old photo books in. To begin the restoration of this trunk we began by taking off the old canvas covering and all paper on the inside. Next we sanded the wood on ... morethe entire trunk. On the outside and on the inside. After all the sanding was done, we then applied coats of Polyurethane as the finishing touch to give the wood a nice shine. The trunk has some typical small stress marks and small stress cracks which are common in wood of this age. Next we painted all metal parts of the trunk with a black or gold leaf paint. We then attached 2 new Amish made black leather hand l es to this beautiful trunk. With this particular trunk we installed a new lock with 2 working keys. The interior of this wonderful trunk under the dome has a hidden compartment section. Notice picture. The lid also has the original picture which is in good condition. You can drop down the door to access this area in the hidden compartment which is also shown in a picture. You will find the original stay to keep the lid open. Finally on the bottom of the trunk we painted all the black on that too. Also on the bottom are the four original casters. This trunk has a very nice interior. Set of 6 wooden hangers from an antique wardrobe trunk from the early 1900's. They are in need of some TLC. But will be great for anyone restoring an old trunk! The first picture shows the whole lot. The others include close ups of the wood hangers. Showing their condition. They all measure around 18" wide& 8" top to bottom. Some of them have a little damage on each side as shown it the photos. Front lock doesn't work. Two clasp hardware still work. Leather handles present on one side, but fragile. Lid opens and closes easily. antique trunk refinished Victorian chest circa 1890-1900 w/tray and key
Up for auction is a remarkable refinished antique steamer trunk circa 1890-1895 in fabulous condition. The trunk comes with its original tray which has been fitted with a new wood bottom. The interior of the trunk has been completely cleaned of its old coverings. The wood sanded, stained and sealed with 3 coats of sealer. The old musty smell is gone replaced with a new finish scent that will disappear over time. The sealer was water based so not nearly the odor is left inside. All the metal on the trunk has undergone a three part process to bring back luster but still retain the antique character of the piece. The newly exposed wood exterior of the trunk has been sanded, stained and sealed with multiple coats(i lost count) of a high grade oil based sealer which resulted in a furniture like finish which will stand up,with care, for many years. ... moreNew premium grade leather handles were installed and end caps re-installed just as the original were with with nails turned back into the wood. The bottom of the trunk was cleaned, a rust inhibitor applied to the metal, then primed and everything sealed. The lock on this trunk is original. It is an Excelsior lock made in Newark NJ and the key locks it with a nice click. This trunk was originally sold by the Charles William Stores which was a mail order house located in New York City. This company was in operation before being bought out from 1860 to sometime in the 1920's. The original metal tag identifying the store remains on the trunk. On the tag is a registration number identifying the owner and states if the trunk is separated from the owner, contact(write in those days) the store and the name of the owner will be known. Quite unique for the day. This just a great antique trunk and can be displayed proudly in any home. It measures 32 inches long by 20 inches wide by 23 inches high. The lid has a slight arch. T he out side measures 23" long. 9 1/2" tall, and 12 1/2 wide" it's a great size for a coffee table, toy box, sock box, or actually use in the basement to store tools! Strong handles and original label inside which is rare for such a old box. Has original key hole but no key. Look at the detail edging on lid and bottom of box, very nice box. Period 18th Century Antique Carved Oak Storage Chest Trunk - RARE
This is a rare pre-1800 period oak chest or trunk. The chest features hand chiseled carvings or motifs on the front followed by a scalloped edge base. The chest has mitered corners along with hand forged hinges and nails. The lid braces were hand hewn and have distinctive worm holes that come with theses century old pieces of furniture. It is a wonderful old piece which reeks of character. The chest measures 351/2" by 13" and stands 16" tall and is in excellent. Deep royal blue with a striking yellow stripe and black leather accents. The interior is a pale green with white accents, a very stunning pattern by itself. Includes 5 drawers, 2 types of wooden hangers which are on an extendable rod, and a travel case. The top of the wardrobe opens for ease of access. The side says"Kenworthy, Glenside, PA. It measures 42" length x 22" width x 23" height. It weighs approximately 85lbs. It opens as you see in the pictures and when fully open measures 45" across. As far as condition issues. I have photographed what I have seen. Two of the rollerballs on the bottom have pushed through but still work and do not affect its ... moreability to stand upright. There is also another tear on the bottom(see picture) The bottom drawers metal accent has come loose, but could be fixed. There are a few tears on the bottom drawer and some age stains throughout the trunk(see pictures) There is no key for the lock however it does close, but must be reopened with a screwdriver.
