The trunk has a hinged lid, and the original lining is still inside the bottom portion of the trunk. The trunk is made of wood, with a nice brown covering that is mainly intact, although it is torn in quite a few places, and metal reinforced seams. There is no key with it, and the original locking mechanism is now missing. The trunk also has two latches, one on each side of the main lock, that are a unique design and work well, although they are covered with a fair amount of surface rust. The trunk also has other label remnants on it from travel, as well as a partial guarantee label inside the lid.

Ladies Saratoga Trunk" Otherwise known as a"Barrel Stave Top" or"Dome Top" ... moreThis style of trunk is quite often mistakenly referred to as a steamer trunk; steamer trunks are a maximum of 14" tall and flat. A bit rough. Someone removed the lock portion of the main latch. It is an unusual double latch design. The compartment lid inside has broken and been repaired. Corner wear, some surface rust and oxidation. Leather handles broke off and were replaced with some very heavy duty brass handles a long time ago. The brass handles appear to be quite old. One of the cast strap clamps is broken yet all there. There is some damage to the tin clad skin. Original lining is cracked and torn in places. It appears to be all original with the exception of the handles and has not been painted(painting these trunks takes away from their value significantly) I'm sure I'm missing something so please look at the photos carefully and ask questions! Item is available for preview with appointment. I personally would leave it an unrestored original yet it could be restored bringing its value up. This would make a great display piece in your store, business or home. It has a covered hat/ glove compartment in the lid. Hardwood slats. The inside of the lid has the 2 original color chromo-lithographs; one depicting a man pushing a wheelbarrow with a woman and 3 children inside and the other is a woman pushing her daughter on a swing with a smaller picture of what appears to be ice skaters. The metal detailing throughout is stunning. The footing I’ve never seen. The latches say“patd 79” and the middle plate says. Patd May 54 and April 73. Hence, this is pre-1880. The inside is rough but it still has all the Victorian inserts! The inserts are in really tough shape, ripped, water damaged but it’s all there. The entire drawer/insert comes out. Size is approximately 32”X25”X14” It’s all original…I won’t even dust it. IT STILL HAS THE KEY AND IT WORKS! And. As always, a few notes from the disclaimer department. Everything is“as is. To begin refinishing this particular trunk we had to take off the canvas on the outside and all the paper from the inside. This gorgeous trunk is made up of pine wood with oak slats. Once we removed the canvas and paper we sanded all the wood and then applied polyurethane by Minwax. On this trunk are two new Amish tan leather handles. Also on the trunk are the two original latches to keep the lid secure and the original stay to help keep the lid open when needed. We also attached a new lock with two working keys. The fancy metal hardware on this trunk has also been repainted by hand in black and gold leaf. This is a higher end trunk as there is leather on all the ... moreedges. As in any trunk of this age there are a few signs of wear but that is to be expected. The interior of the trunk is very clean. We have also applied polyurethane to the bottom to give it a new refinished look. The size of this trunk is perfect for its use as a hope chest to keep all your precious belongings in. This beautiful trunk would look very nice placed at the foot of a bed. It could also be used by a college student to store things in. Beautiful Refinished Antique Dome Top Trunk with Working Lock and key and original tray. This is a very nice. Clean refinished dome top steamer trunk from the late 1800's. To begin refinishing this particular trunk we took all the paper off from the inside. We then removed some of the metal from between the slat boards to expose the wood underneath.
