It is a wood structure trunk and frame with smooth me tal(black) and woven pattern metal riveted overlays with beautiful beading to ta ck in metals and curved and straight gorg eousl y grained wood slat s. Here's what I stated about it s condition: Metal overlay surfaces have been repainted and restored. Some scratches and scuffs marks on beautifully grained wood slats. Leather handle missing on left side. Flip up side locking latches both flip up into locking position. But only one catches to keep it lock closed and the other is missing its catch. Center locking latching closes in position but does not lock and there is no key. Interior lining shows foxing and staining and has some t ares due to great age. But smells clean with nice scent like cedar inside. Truly a rare beauty of extra large size that has great looks and craftsmanship on evident in these earlier era pieces of exceptional beauty. Refinished Flat Top Steamer Trunk Antique Chest With Straps and Interior Tray
Charming Refinished Antique Flat Top Steamer Trunk With Straps and Buckles and Interior Tray Here is a real primitive refinished steamer trunk or antique chest from the 1800's. This one is made up of pine base wood with poplar outer slat boards. It is probably from the Civil War era and has the original lock. The lock is there. But we could not find a key that works with it. So we are selling it in"As Is" condition as far as the lock goes. The trunk has the following dimension s: from left to right across the front is 27 1/2 inches. From floor to top is 12 1/2 inches, and from front edge to back edge is 14 inches. The wood has been finished with three coats of polyurethane by Minwax. There are some typical older distress marks on the wood which include older nicks and dings in the wood along with some stress cracks. A small ... morepiece of one of the top outer slat boards has been chipped away, probably many years ago. We have run a pair of Amish made leather straps with roller buckles up the front and across the top. These will secure the trunk's top to it's base when buckled. There were no front latches on this trunk. The side handles were missing and have been replaced with black leather straps. All of our leather products for these trunks are obtained from an Amish man near our home in Pennsylvania. You might want to use this trunk to store your Civil War items, coins, or other personal valuables inside. Our trunks have been used to display teddy bear and doll collections. Going to the inside, we have made a nice tray for the interior. The interior tray and interior wood have been given two coats of polyurethane. The interior wood is rough cut boards with the saw blade marks still on them. A nice picture of a Victorian girl posing has been added to the underside of the top. Going underneath the trunk to the exterior bottom, it is in decent shape and we have finished the bottom with a coat of polyurethane to make the trunk overall cleaner. 1870-1900 Victorian Antique Steamer Trunk or Chest, of the "Titanic" Era
This is a well preserved. Collector-quality antique chest with a rounded top. A photograph aboard the Titanic shows a trunk very similar to this one. The well-known"Titanic" which sank on its first voyage. Though thought to be unsinkable. Read about the"Unsinkable Molly Brown" saved alive from that ship. Steamer trunks" were standard luggage for traveling aboard ship in those days. Nothing is missing on this trunk except the key to the lock! Helpful for someone interested in restoring it. Even the antique leather handles( 150 plus years old) are strong and intact! and were used to lift the empty trunk for its recent journey from its purchase point. View the photographs of each of the thick leather handles. Recently purchased from an estate sale in Southern California. For its age, this"treasured" chest is ... morein truly in excellent shape. The trunk opens and closes work as should. There is no warping. No"musty" smell. This trunk is as is. With all of the interest and beauty of its aged condition. On the edges where the lid and the lower portion of the trunk meet. The flower-embossed tin sheet metal shows the patina's original condition, a golden copper sheen. The sturdy sheet metal on the very bottom of the trunk is plain un-embossed sheet metal. Black in color with wooden slats. In a"grease pencil or crayon" on the bottom of the trunk on one of the wooden slats appears"32 x 84" The bottom of the trunk shows evidence of wheels once attached in each of the four corners of the trunk. No labels have yet been discovered in the trunk which would reveal more about its origins. There is some writing on the bottom of the trunk on one of the wooden slats indicating"32 x 84" This trunk or chest is better than average condition from what I've seen on eBay. The original canvas that wrapped this trunk has been removed and the wood was sanded. Antique RailRoad Steamer Trunk Horse Buggy Chest. Cast Iron Hardware and Brass Lock. This was a traveling chest. Most likely RailRoad, has old stickers from traveling from state to state but there hard to read do to being old, weathered and in poor condition. Has owners name painted on side of trunk and below name Cincinnati, Ohio. Inside has blue maker tag, most of the tag is missing. Trunk is in Fair to Good condition, trunk is solid with no wood rot, All the cast hardware is good, cast iron and brass lock, some of the cast iron hardware is ornate and of good quality for the time. Front latch locks have a midevil look. Missing one wheel but the caster that holds the wheel is good. Trunk has paint loss, scuffs and scratches, rips in material, rust ect. Gorgeous Refinished Antique Monitor Top Steamer Trunk With Two Working Locks& a Key and Interior Tray Here we have finished a lovely. Fancy monitor top steamer trunk from around 1900 or so. Here are the following dimensions: from left to right across the front is 39 inches. From floor to top is 25 inches, and from front edge to back edge is 22 1/2 inches. This beautiful monitor top gets it's name from the late 1800's USS Monitor warship. It was a metal clad frigot that must have had this type of shape to it. Anyhow. This trunk has the waterfall or Deco style edge at the top. It is really neat how the trunk maker made the slat boards bend down around the edges. It is a pretty steep bend and it is incredible how they can make the boards conform to it back then. This beautiful trunk consists of rough cut pine and oak base wood with ... moreoak or ash outer slat boards. A lot of the boards are not planed down, they are straight off the saw mill and have the saw blade markings on them. If you look at the close up picture of the top, there are some boards on the top that are wormwood in which there are little holes here and there on the boards. You may seem some in the picture. A lot of antique collectors like to find furniture that has this type of wood on them. The wood has been prepared and finished with three coats of polyurethane by Minwax to protect the wood and give it a nice appearance. This trunk comes with a lot of fancy metal hardware and a very nice feature are the factory double locks which do work and are signed. They are signed, Eagle Lock Co Terryville Conn U.S.A. We have matched up a key that does work both of these locks, so you can store your items under lock and key away from others if you want to do so. The center latch is also original and does work properly since the springs in intact. These monitor tops only come about for us to refinish in a ratio of about 80 to 1 in which we only get about 2 or so a year to do. Up for sale is this beautiful restored large antique victorian roll top steamer trunk with key. It measures 35" long by 22 1/4" wide and 25" tall. The original canvas that wrapped this trunk has been removed and the wood was sanded. Stained with minwax"cherry" then sealed with two coats of spar urethane(light sand in between coats) The interior lining has been removed and the wood was sanded then stained. The trunk shows obvious aesthetic signs of age but these details give it the perfect patina and look. The structure of this trunk is solid and it is functional as a coffee table, blanket chest, etc. A great piece with tons of character that will be the focal point of any room. Antique(circa 1890- 1910) steamer trunk by one of the luxury brands of its time. Beals& Selkirk. The company was founded in 1889 in Detroit before relocating to Wyandotte. Michigan a few years later. The trunks produced by Beals and Selkirk were considered to be amongst the finest of their time. These trunks were built to withstand the toughest of handling. They were reinforced with leather or metal corners, straps, bumpers. handles, hinges, and locks. After the San Francisco earthquake in 1906 left thousands of people homeless, Beals and Selkirk sent 6 carloads of trunks. They also mass produced a simpler style for the army during WWI and WWII. By the 1920's, the Beals and Selkirk company shifted from trunks to handbags, appliance covers, and doctors' bags. This particular trunk is is good working order. The history of each trunk dates back as early as the 1 800's. Each has its own unique story. While owning a trunk of your own. You can enhance the tradition and legacy with your own family. This is a very nice decorative refinished flat top steamer trunk. The particular d imensions for this are 32" length. 19" width and 21" height. This beautiful trunk would make a great trunk for a college student to keep stuff in, or for someone to store old photo books in. To begin the restoration of this trunk we began by taking off the old canvas covering and all paper on the inside. Next we sanded the wood on the entire trunk. On the outside and ... moreon the inside. After all the sanding was done, we then applied coats of Polyurethane as the finishing touch to give the wood a nice shine. The trunk has some typical small stress marks and small stress cracks which are common in wood of this age. Next we painted all metal parts of the trunk with a black or gold leaf paint. We then attached 2 new Amish made tan leather hand l es to this beautiful trunk. With this particular trunk we were able to keep the original lock and key and they are in good working condition. Working the way up to the lid of this trunk. You will find the original stay to keep the lid open when wanted. Also on the lid you will find the original label. This is in wonderful condition and very readable. We included a picture to show you the label. We love finding these on trunks, it fills us in on a little bit of the trunk's history. Finally on the bottom of the trunk we painted all the black on that too. Also on the bottom are the four original casters that roll smoothly while moving the trunk. ANTIQUE STEAMER TRUNK CHEST VINTAGE RESTORED SMALL SIZE ALLIGATOR C.1872-1900
Alligator Embossed Steamer Trunk 1872-1900 This slightly domed trunk with simulated alligator“hide” dates from 1872 to 1900 based on its patent dates and appointments. It is constructed of pine box framing with horizontal hardwood slats. The decorative tin is embossed with an alligator pattern and the trunk is secured with steel. Tin and brass hardware. Although its exact age is undetermined. The trunk’s hasp hardware shows a patent date of July 9, 72. Therefore, it’s fair to estimate from its overall construction and appointments that this steamer probably was manufactured between 1872 and 1900. A unique feature of this trunk is that the two front hasps have small levers that allow the lid to be secured in the closed position. The lock tongue is missing, and was not replaced in the restoration, but the lock plate when cleaned revealed brilliant ... morebrass details. This trunk is lightweight and measures 24 inches long. 14 inches wide, and 15 inches high at its crown. In the refinishing. The plain paper that lined the interior and lid was removed and the inside was cleaned, sanded and finished with two coats of clear satin polyurethane to preserve the natural color of the pine. A new floor of cedar was installed and a new tray was built and stained Early American. The exterior was refinished by sanding and wire brushing the tin. Then treating it with rust inhibitor and painted with Rustoleum Satin Black. The hardwood slats were cleaned, sanded, and finished with tung oil, with steel wool between coats to enhance the finish. The embossed“alligator” tin was cleaned and wiped with Minwax Dark Walnut stain to restore its original finish. It was then sealed with tung oil to create its natural look. Vintage Trunk Vintage Flat Top Trunk. Amazing storage trunk dating back to the early 1900s. Wood construction with vulcanzied fiber covering and metal reinforced edges. Corners and clasps. Front lock doesn't work. Two clasp hardware still work. Leather handles present on one side, but fragile. Lid opens and closes easily. It is missing the locking hinge arm that allows the lid to be kept open at a 45 degree angle. It is solid and able to carry weight. Has name written inside. Inside lip where tray can be stowed is broken(easy to repair) Measures 31" long x 17" wide x 13" tall. Structurally in great condition. And sits flush and flat. There are no weak points. Beautiful Refinished Antique Jenny Lind Style Trunk With Straps. Working Lock& Key, and Interior Tray Here is a really beautiful completely refinished Jenny Lind steamer trunk or travel chest from the mid 1800's and it is signed on the bottom in painted calligraphy with black paint of the owner's name and the county in Pennsylvania that he lived. Take a look at the picture of the bottom and you will see this beautiful signature. We think it is"James Selle" or something like that and it says. Mifflintown Juniata County" which is about 1 1/2 hours from our house and it is where we purchased this trunk to refinish. It is kind of neat to know who probably originally owned this trunk about 150 years ago. Anyhow, here are the trunk's dimensions: from left to right across the front is 26 inches, from floor to top is ... moreapproximately 16 inches, and from front edge to back edge is 15 1/4 inches. This is a Jenny Lind trunk as we have mentioned before in other ads. These Jenny Linds came about because of the opera singer from Europe. She traveled overseas to come to America to perform and she had beautiful trunks to carry her luggage in. The American trunk makers noticed the beautiful style and started making trunks with that look here in America for customers. It is the slice of bread shape on the side where the top angles in along with the base angling in towards the top. Also it has the metal banding with the decorative buttons or rosettes. These are notorious for the Jenny Lind style. The trunk dates back to somewhere around 1860 or so. The wood is in very nice condition. It has been finished with three coats of polyurethane to preserve it and give it a nice appearance. A lot of times, there is a big crack or gap going across the top on these older trunks because of wood shrinkage. This one only has a small hairline stress crack on the top which is very common on older trunks that we refinish. Nice Refinished Antique Flat Top Steamer Trunk With Straps& Buckles. Interior Divided Tray, and Working Lock& Key Here we have a nice. Clean refinished flat top steamer trunk from around 1900 or so. This one is a true flat top with no factory arch. Here are the following dimensions: from left to right across the front is 36 1/2 inches. From floor to top is 24 inches, and from front edge to back edge is 21 inches. This trunk appears to be made up of pine base wood with poplar or ash outer slat boards. The wood has been finished with three coats of polyurethane by Minwax. The wood is in pretty good condition with some typical older distress marks which include older nicks and dings concentrated on to the outer slat boards along with some hairline stress cracks. Just about all of the trunks that we refinish have these similar markings. ... moreThis beautiful trunk comes with the original signed working lock. It is signed, Eagle Lock Co Terryville Conn U.S.A. We have matched up a key that does work properly with this lock. This one originally had leather straps with buckles. They were eroded away, so we have run a nice pair of Amish made leather straps with roller buckles up the front and across the top in the very same location where the original ones once were. These straps are functional and when buckled, they help secure the top of the trunk to it's base in addition to the lock and front latches. The front latches are in working condition and are original. The side handles have also been replaced with Amish made black leather stitched straps. The metal parts that make up this trunk are not brass and have therefore been brush painted by hand in black and gold leaf. Going to the inside of the trunk. It comes with the original divided tray. We have replaced the bottom of the tray with a wooden bottom to make it sturdy. We have removed the interior paper lining from the interior and tray since it was worn out. Nice Refinished Antique Dome Top Steamer Trunk With Working Lock With Key and Interior Tray Here is a lovely refinished dome top or arch top steamer trunk or travel trunk from the late 1800's to around 1900. Here are the trunk's dimensions: from left to right across the front is 24 1/4 inches. From floor to top is approximately 14 inches, and from front edge to back edge is 14 inches. We removed some of the metal from between the slat boards to expose the wood underneath. The trunk appears t be made up of poplar base wood which are rough cut boards. These boards show the saw blade marks from the saw mill since they were not planed down to a smooth texture. The outer slat boards appear to be oak or ash. The wood has been finished with three coats of polyurethane by Minwax to preserve the wood. This one was missing the lock when we ... morereceived it and we have given it an older replacement lock which is signed. It says, Eagle Lock Co Terryville Conn U.S.A. This replacement lock comes with the proper key and does work correctly. A lot of doll collectors and collectors of coins and Civil War items have purchased this smaller sized trunk to store their collectible items inside. If you have a teddy bear or doll collection, you can display those items in and on the trunk with the lid in the open position. The side handles were missing and have been replaced with Amish made black leather stitched straps. We do obtain all of our leather products for these trunks from an Amish man in an Amish community near our home here in Pennsylvania. The front latches are original and do work properly and they have been remounted with screws. There has been a couple of areas of metal patchwork done on this trunk. One area is at the top left side of the lid. A piece of metal was missing and we have put in a piece to cover this area. A close up picture of this area has been shown. VTG Antique Old FANCY Cast Metal Chest Steamer Trunk Lock Latch Hardware Parts
This is a really neat heavy cast metal lock/latch which I believe came off a very old steamer trunk of sorts. It's in good used vintage condition with some surface wear and tarnish and I believe a tiny crack by the bottom bolt that you can't see from the front and doesn't seem to affect its use whatsoever.please view pictures for any further description/condition. It measures just under 5 5/8" tall x 3" wide in the locked latched position. Don't forget to take a look at all my other unique vintage hardware I have listed as well. Fantastic Large Antique Black Steamer Trunk Chest
Nice. Heavy black/very dark brown antique steamer trunk. The front lock and both side latches are present. Often the front center mechanisms are missing. Gorgeous metal accents and rivet work. Much of the leather strapping has rotted away which is very normal for these trunks that did most of their travel in the damp bottoms of large ships. The initials JEM has been placed on the side. There is a small dent on the top and water damage to the lining only on the inside as you can see in the photos. PERFECT for an end or coffee table with the flat top, as a restoration project or a blanket chest. Measures 24.5" High, 38" Wide and 22" Deep.
