Stunning antique Chinese trunk that was used to transport travelers belongings on ships. Hand painted folk art detail on leather. Brass rivets and copper seams. Pigs skin leather. The front has a Pennsylvania Dutch style painted eagle holding a banner that reads. Marian E. Frank 1922. The E may be an& sign. The chest sits on 4 ball feet. It measures 16.5 by 9.5 by 11 inches. Antique India Folk Art Wood Hope Chest / Marriage Box Trunk Hand Painted
Hi. For sale an antique wood/ chest(circa 1800s/ early 1900) marriage box. I am not positive of the boxes origin but I believe this is Folk Art. There are hand painted tulips on the edges and hand painted white flowers used in early American art. The measurements are 17 inches wide or long. 9 1/2 inches in height, and 7 1/2 inches deep. The chest/ Box weighs 11 pounds. It does have wear which is to be expected for it's age. The paint on the flowers have faded in some places, there are a few cracks on the wood, one is on the bottom(does not go all the way through, and one is on the inside of the lid. Wood shrinks with age and cracks are normal. There are a few places where wood has chipped off(one on the foot) the lock is missing and there is a heavy patina especially the places that would get the most use(by the handles. The front side ... morehas a darker patina(see 2nd picture) than the back side, it was probably sitting up against a wall and was covered on the top. The feet did have felt pads at one time. The rivets(or nails) are old type nails. It is made very well, it is very heavy and sturdy and it closes fine. It is a very beautiful piece whatever its origin is and the paint job is intricate and looks like it was very time consuming. Please email with any questions I will be glad to help. Primitive Antique Folk Art Painted Trunk Chest Old estate find. This is a nice early trunk that has been decorated on all sides with folk art paintings. I do not know the age of the painting but it is charming and colorful. On the top of the trunk there is writing in script that says"He who gives a child a treat- makes joy bells ring in heaven's street" The oval with the writing is bordered with flowers and figures. There is a house on the front with a woman and man, a rocking horse on the ends and two angels on the back. Nice painted border around the top and bottom edge. From the historic port of Nantes it is constructed of fine oak rather than the typical pine. The decoration is original and untouched and depicted garlands of flowers with two delightfully naïve canary or oriole type birds. It is impossible to pinpoint its history. They were typically commissioned by ships captains or owners and are usually painted though I have never seen illustrations of such a romantic example. The inference is that it is a marriage piece with the inscribed date that of the union. One can guess it was a gift from a mariner/owner to his bride. Red Painted American Blanket Chest over Drawer Primarily Yellow Pine. 19th Century Item# 130010CPL26 This is a very attractive Painted American Blanket Chest over a single Drawer retaining an early grungy surface over earlier surfaces of the same color. It is a six-plank blanket chest. Crafted practically in a somewhat crude and certainly rural manner; the face and back are nailed into the sides of the case with square iron nails, this hidden behind half-round black painted molding outlining the facade of the case. The bottom board is nailed in even rows along the sides and along the back, beneath which a single drawer slides in and out of the case. The drawer construction matches that of the case, the joints half-lapped and nailed with iron rose heads, these resting over runners of the same[unidentified] hardwood nailed to the sides of the ... morecase with iron rose heads. The single plank top lifts over original cotter pin hinges supplemented by modern hinges for strength, these modern hinges actually the second set of hinges placed on the case to supplement the cotter pins. The result is a smooth operating top, lifting easily to reveal a large storage area and original steel lock(no key) The cleats flanking the case are nailed to the underside of the lid with a series of even rose heads. All of the brasses are added for effect, the original case having only wooden knobs on the lower drawer at some point before it was painted. The case terminates over boot-jack feet. For anyone passionate about country-style American Painted antiques. This is a beautiful little piece that is not only rather eye-catching, but also quite practical. Beautiful. Petite carved wood chest of drawers with marble top. The commode was probably some sort of burled wood that has now been painted a flat black. Because it was painted over burl, you can see the varying textures on the sides. It looks like the hardware or at least screws were replaced at some point as some of the screws are quite long when you open the drawers. The bottom drawer is hard to open. Some chipping to paint. The marble top is a beautiful shape with varying veining of purples and pinks. The piece is a great size and would work as an end table, nightstand, storage piece in a powder room, etc. I would recommend white glove shipping to protect the delicacy of the marble, but I'll leave shipping arrangements up to the buyer. C. 1820-40; almost untouched condition Item# 1401ETP11PP This is a nearly untouched example of early Americana. An austere and unembellished blanket chest from the second quarter of the nineteenth-century. The top is a single solid plank of thick poplar with molding applied to the edges using cut iron nails, lifting over original cut and forged iron strap hinges(retaining original screws) to reveal a tidy interior with a small till on the left. An iron lock used to be attached to the inside, this and the clasp now absent. Antique Hand Painted Pennsylvania Dutch German Wedding Blanket Trunk Chest
This is a beautiful antique hand painted chest or trunk. It is decorated on 4 sides with flowers. The flower painting is in pretty good shape on the sides and on the top. The escutcheon is very unique. The trunk measures roughly 46 inches wide by 23 inches deep by 25 inches high. It has been passed down in my family for several generations. I can remember it always being in a guest bedroom in my grandparents home and they were art and antique collectors. I am in the process of downsizing and I have quite a few pieces to sell. I would estimate late 18th to early 19th century. The hardware and lock are iron and the locking mechanism is very primitive in design. I do not have a key. The paint is in good condition but there is some wear on the corners and edges. The interior is in pretty good shape. The boards are solid. Country Pine Folk Painted 1840's Antique Immigrant Trunk or Chest. Hand crafted in northern Europe in the 1840's. This picturesque immigrant trunk or chest is wormy pine with hand painted floral motifs resembling traditional Scandinavian rosemaling. Hand planed with hand cut corner dovetails. This furniture has a beautiful old finish. Waxed and buffed, only an occasional wipe with a soft dry cloth is needed to maintain its warm patina. The interior is very clean. There is a compartment with a lift lid for valuables. Hand wrought iron mounts and handles are original, there are losses to the banding as shown. A 19th century painted blanket chest. Dovetailed throughout, in need of restoration or display as is. The surface is very worn and dry and we believe it to be original. Working lock and key. The hinges, while old, are replacements; the lock we believe is original. There is significant damage/loss to the bun feet. Lots of dings, scratches, wear and tear. Repairs to the area around the hinges on the back of the piece. The piece measures approximately 15" tall(including 2" bun feet) 27" wide, and 14.25" deep. The width and the depth are the box dimensions- the lid is a bit bigger. We do not know the maker or the region of origin, but it does not seem like an American piece to us. Beautiful Antique German Pennsylvania Hand Painted Trunk Chest For sale is a beautiful antique hand painted chest or trunk. It is decorated on 4 sides with flowers. The painting appears to be on top of a gesso or tempera of sorts. The flower painting is very nice and in pretty good shape on the sides but worn on the top. The escutcheon is very unique. The trunk measures roughly 46.5 inches wide by 23.5 inches deep by 23.5 inches high. It shows a good deal of age because it is very old. I am not certain but would estimate late 18th to early 19th century. It is possible that it is older since the joints and hardware are similar to chests claiming to be early to mid 1700s. The hardware and lock are iron and the locking mechanism is very primitive in design. I do not have a key. The iron hinges could use a little straightening. There are square ... moreand round nails holding it together. Some of the nails for the hinges have been replaced with screws. The paint is cracked and peeling and missing and dirty. The interior of the trunk shows mostly red. The lid has a label and a picture of cupids. The label in in German but I don't think it has anything to do with the origin or maker of the trunk. There is a small lidded storage compartment on the left side. The ball feet appear to be correct. One toward the back shows deterioration. There are some random areas that show past termite activity or worm holes. I am not sure. The boards are solid. Though. This trunk was just removed from a Los Angeles storage unit and needs a very thorough cleaning. I am not an expert on such pieces and welcome any details people might be able to add. This is a beautiful primitive immigrant's trunk. This is a very large trunk measuring 55"Wx32"Hx24"Deep with a curved top. It has dark green painted planks with hand stenciled flowers. Also stenciled on the front is the initials"BLD" and the date"1849" The trunk has hand forged metal straps. Handles and an original keyhole with the old fashioned metal key. The key and latch still works. Construction includes wooden pegs and dove tailed joints. The inside of the trunk is the original whitewashed wood with built in box storage area. The 2 rings on the front face with a date of 1840 and the names of the couple is a nice give away this is a pretty special find. Its has its flaws from age but this one is 100% Org. no touch up work done to it. It is all hand peg construction with a super nice hideing box on the left side. Some of these were made with secret compartments. But I havent had the time to look. The Handles the lock& the hinges are bold gothicstyle hand forged iron It is still useable but I have miss placed the pins for the lid. All the wood is in good condiion on all 4 sides and lid. There is a chip on the back of the lid(see pix) and someone has used new screws on the hinges. The grain painting is in good condition with a few missing spots on the lid(see pix) There are no splits in the wood. All original feet and it has lock but no key. It is very sound structurally. MEASUREMENTS: 37 1/2" wide x 27 1/2" tall x 19" deep. The front and side planks are 21 1/2" one plank. A circa 1920 Dutch oak chest with canted sides and raised on feet. Very well hand painted in the style of the Frisian town of Hindeloopen. Known for its painted interiors and furniture. A tight glue joint can be seen in the bottom, the lid does not lock properly due to normal shrinkage, though the lock and key are in working order. Antique Pennsylvania Blanket Chest Painted and Dated 1850 / Folk Art 19th Cent
Here a fine mid 19th century Pennsylvania blanket chest. Perhaps it was a wedding present for Marion and Leroy. It is constructed of pine with all surfaces painted with the exception of the inside and bottom. It is a very nice display size with outside measurements of 36" wide. 22" tall and 18" deep. The folk painted surfaces have some wear as shown and there is fine crazing/ oxidation attributable to the age. Very fine shape for 164 years old. Nice forged strap hinges. I believe the 2 pieces of wood to reinforce the underside of the top were been added in the 20th century. It is very solid throughout.
