It is a wood structure trunk and frame with smooth me tal(black) and woven pattern metal riveted overlays with beautiful beading to ta ck in metals and curved and straight gorg eousl y grained wood slat s. Here's what I stated about it s condition: Metal overlay surfaces have been repainted and restored. Some scratches and scuffs marks on beautifully grained wood slats. Leather handle missing on left side. Flip up side locking latches both flip up into locking position. But only one catches to keep it lock closed and the other is missing its catch. Center locking latching closes in position but does not lock and there is no key. Interior lining shows foxing and staining and has some t ares due to great age. But smells clean with nice scent like cedar inside. Truly a rare beauty of extra large size that has great looks and craftsmanship on evident in these earlier era pieces of exceptional beauty. Today you can go anywhere in the entire world within 24 hours by plane. Just think way back when before commercial airlines. People traveled primarily by railroad or by ship. Traveling was long, hard, and exhausting. People would literally live out of these trunks as they traveled for weeks and sometimes months on end. Thus. They were built with quality and built to last, which is why they have stood the test of time! The craftsmanship that went into the construction and design of theses ole’ trunks are truly nothing short of spectacular. I recently discovered this wardrobe trunk buried in the rafters in the attic of a local farm house estate in a in nearby town. It stopped me dead in tracks and I had to literally pick my jaw up off the floor! There was no way I was leaving without this trunk. And lucky for me I had hubby to carry it out of the attic and down 3 flits of stairs! And now for the decription… This is a nice authentic period Wardrobe steamer trunk. It is signed on the exterior by the maker Oshkosh Trunk Company. I am unsure of the exact age. But it was clearly left where I had found it for a very very long time. If I had to guestimate I would say it is likely from the early 20 th century. It measures 40 x 22 x 20 inches and weighs 75 pounds respectfully. The exterior is covered with what appears to be a volcanized material with dozens of original brass. Nails, knobs Hinges, Lock and hardware. The lock comes with key and functions as designed. On the interior right side. The trunk has 5 wood drawers with original deco drawer pulls and covered in swanky antique fabric. The metal banks and plates have a nice rusted surface patina; the wood is in good shape but with a complimentary aged surfaces. The canvas has faded and has been torn& patched in places. The hasp for the locking mechanism is missing, and someone added some wooden"feet" to it which can be easily detached by removing the screws. Antique Trunk Wood Covered In Leather 1800's Metal Bands Beautiful Piece
Beautiful antique trunk. I had someone online look at pictures and he estimated it was from about 1890. The research I have done myself leads me to believe it was made between 1870-1890. It is made of wood and covered in leather. I believe that it's pine but I could be wrong. There are metal bands across the top and around the edges. Please see pictures this truck is old and has plenty of bumps and bruises. The leather handle straps are missing and there are several patches of leather missing on the top and front. There is also a crack in the lid. It definitely needs some TLC but is still beautiful and has tons of rustic charm. There is paper lining the inside that is torn and has some spots. Here we have an antique Late 19th Century-Early Twentieth Century AS-FOUND/ AS-IS Steamer Trunk. It has Provenance: lots of old stickers and writing the name Joseph C Fonseca. Stickers from the Greek Lines Navigation Co. and more. It has rounded edges, fancy metal work some copper? and banding- copper? the lighter colored banding might be leather, but I'm not positive. Antique Steamer Trunk-Dome Top-metal & wood bands-inside tray-circa 1890-1910
Antique dome-topped steamer trunk. Believed to be circa 1890-1910. Wood and most of the metal is in very good shape(could easily be refinished) however, the protective metal bands at corners have received some damage over many years of steamer-travel and freight-handling. The large interior tray is intact, and one of the lid-compartment doors is also intact. Note the decorative panel inside the lid, which is vibrant in color and unblemished. The interior of the trunk has the strong smell of cedar, so I'm assuming that tray construction is of cedar wood underneath the papered covering. Sorry but there is no key. The lid hinges close just slightly"off-center, but the trunk does close and latch securely with care. Can't see a maker's mark, but labels(where legible) indicate travel to NY, so assume it is of American origin. Great vintage trunk with great wide wood slats over pattered metal. It has a slight dome or curved shape to top. It's missing one the lifting straps onside. But the hardware is there for an easy repair. It has original owners name, P.E. Pierce, stenciled on one side as well. It measures 30" wide across front. 18" deep front to back. and 21" tall at highest point. It has 98% of it's original decorated paper inside. The hinges on back had come and have been repaired with new hardware, making it very secure. It has original cloth strap to hold it open. Please see many photos for best condition report. This is an antique lot of 8 original hardware pcs. off an early steamer trunk good for repurpose repair parts. They are in solid condition but are very old so some rust too backs but nothing terrible. There are 4 pcs. that go on the trunk lid and 4 pcs. the go fro the lid down the side. The straight pcs. are 4" long about ad the others are 3 1/4" because one end goes over the lid top. Each pc. is 1 1/4" wide. Original metal salvaged parts lot! Happy to answer questions! this is a nice small antique doll trunk or salesman sample. I got with an antique bisque head baby doll. It feels like is made out of wood and the stuff atique trunks are made out of it has had the lock cut out and reattached the handle part there is a hole you can see from last pics. Looks like besides lock part has tipical wear from age I would consider in nice antique condition. Has nice leather straps some metal has dents.
