What it revealed itself to be was certainly ... moreenlightening. For concealed between a thin layer of cedar veneer. An even thinner layer of decorative fascia veneer, and a 3/4" thick top strip of cedar running horizontally along the edge was in fact a huge sheet of PARTICLE BOARD! Prior to this rather cleverly deceitful method of increasing a company's profit with the use of inferior material under the guise of quality woods. There used to be a disclaimer attached to such pieces as this LANE'VIRGINIA MAID' CEDAR CHEST This disclaimer identifies the products used in the construction of furniture. And on the inside of the lid it says: 70% MADE OF 3/4" RED CEDAR PANELS(JUNIPERUS VIRGINIANA) So this isn't one of those particle board pieces. It is almost all solid wood except the veneers on the front and top, and the decorative base. ART DECO STYLE The blotchy areas are just where varnish remains-almost all of the varnish has totally disappeared. Leaving a raw piece with just those blotchy areas mentioned-the piece is almost immaculate condition otherwise. Antique "Lane Cedar Chest" 12/5/1929 Style 7340 Blankets, Woolens Altavista VA
The"Lane Cedar Chest Company" started in business as the"Standard Red Cedar Chest Company" in 1912 and the name changed to Lane Cedar Chest in 1922. Chest and box manufacture was their primary business. This chest is in excellent condition. And has a push in latch. We vacuumed out the interior, cleaned the exterior, and treated the exterior with Howards Restor-a Finish Mahogany and then with furniture oil. The scroll Panel on the front is wood and there are a couple of very small dents and dings. Like many of the later chests this is solid red cedar on all sides covered with verneer but the rear could be finished so it can sit in the open in a room and be used as a cocktail table. With or without glass. This piece is ready for you to use. Not a fixer up project, and all you need to do is add your clothing items. This original antique/vintage Lane Cedar Chest is a beautiful family heirloom. It is Style# 2120. Serial# 641260. Date of manufacture is Serial# in reverse: 06/21/46. It measures approximately 48" long x 18" wide x 18" high. I have included several pictures so you can see the overall condition. There are some light scratches on the lid and a few more on the front and sides. There are also a few small patches where the veneer has come off on the edges and one section(see 8th picture) where one of my children drew a couple of small pictures. 1930's Antique Lane Altavista Cedar Blanket Hope Chest
This cedar chest has been in my family since it was new. From the research I've done. It appears the date of manufacture is 10/06/1936. I have the serial number and style number. see photos) The interior is perfect(see photos. It would be worth a lot more money if refinished and possibly the lock replaced. The lock can easily be replaced and it still available for free due to a lock recall, so I just ordered one online and am waiting to receive it in the mail. This is a beautiful genuine antique Lane brand cedar lined hope chest which belonged to my grandmother. She was given this as a 9th grade graduation gift in 1952 from her mom and dad. The color is a beautiful medium brown and made out of solid cedar wood and veneer on the outside and brown stain finish. This chest is very secure and sturdy.
