Antique French Trunk Storage Chest Raised Metal European
At auction is a very fine old French chest. It has great age. Patina on the metal and wood. It looks to be brass raised and dimpled metal, with different scenes on 4 panels. Inside of the box is 24" long by 18" deep by 13.5" wide Top lid size is 27.5" long by 15 3/4" wide. It has a tag on the under side of the lid that says made in France. There was another tag beside it but part of it is missing. The writing and the ink reenforce its age. I am not positive when it was made. But you can see from the pictures its very old. The wood boards in the inside look like the were hand sawed, and have file, rasp marks. You can see it the picture that shows the lid opened. Not positive what the wood is but it looks to be walnut. The bottom and back are bare wood. It has 4 metal wheels on the bottom. This is a great old piece, please look at the pictures good. Any questions email me and I will respond as soon as possible. Icy Morre lived and worked in the French countryside. In the Chateaux region of Tourraine(from the French"tour" or tower) which is where my mother's family is from; Tours, the provincial capital. According to my mother. This chest has been in our family for over three hundred years. So it's quite likely that an ancestor of mine bought it from Icy Morre directly or, more likely, commissioned it. Think of it as early Louis Vuitton! Icy Morre's workshop had no running water or indoor plumbing. Judging from his hand-writing he was only semi-literate. If he had glass panes on his windows they would have been. At most, 6" wide. and forget about central heating. He would have had to wait nearly three centuries for that! But Icy Morre sure knew how to use a hand saw and a chisel! VERY OLD 18thC ANTIQUE FRENCH ROSEWOOD MAHOGANY BRONZE INLAID CHEST CABINET 46"
We are pleased to offer this fabulous. Old credenza. This is a gorgeous cabinet with French, Louis XV style. The credenza features a combination of Rosewood and Mahogany veneer with an abundance of intricate, inlaid patterns. The veneer has rich and vibrant colors. The cabinet is also heavily adorned with bronze mounts. There are two busts of a female figure, one on each side of the cabinet front. Each bust is supported by an inlaid, striped column and finished with Corinthian style, bronze bases. There are large, square, bronze floral medallions that adorn the cabinet. Bronze trim is applied around the perimeter on the upper section. It is also present on the perimeter of the base. The bun feet have bronze rings that encircle their mid sections. The cabinet has an upper, large single drawer and a large interior lower storage. The storage ... morearea has a single shelf. The drawer and the shelf are Rosewood. The door has metal dowels that hold it in place and allow it to swing open. These are not original and are from the 20th century. The cabinet exterior has intricate inlaid designs on each side panel, on the sides of the front of the cabinet, and on the front of the cabinet door. The top of the cabinet has a beautiful piece of black marble which has been cut to match the geometric shape of the cabinet top. The marble has white veins as well as few red veins. This is a very old piece. It consists of 3 sections(not including the marble) Both the top and the plinth connect to the center of the cabinet via crudely cut wooden dowels. There are no screws. There are more modern metal supports that have been added at some point. The back of the cabinet features hand chiseled dovetail joints. As does the drawer. The cabinet has bronze/brass door and drawer pulls that may not be original. This is a gorgeous cabinet of some antiquity. It is in good condition for its age. We are pleased to offer this beautiful. Antique to older vintage chest. This is a very nice piece of accent furniture that is also very functional. The chest features two large drawers for storage. It is crafted of solid wood and has French or Italian provincial lines. It is a bow front design with the curvature extending to the sides. The cabriole legs have a carved shell accent on the feet. The shell is also featured on the center of the scalloped apron/skirt. The entire exposed surface(excluding the back) have been hand painted and stenciled in a Neoclassical pattern of acanthus leafs and ornate scrolls. The color is predominantly white with a golden antiquing glaze wash. The patterns have colors of gold and light green. The drawers retain their original, generously sized, ornate pulls. The chest is in very good condition with some minor ... moreevidence of age/use. There are two water marks on the top. There is also some minor, chipping of the paint. My husband inherited it from a client approximately 20 years ago. He has since past and I do not know the complete history. It was in exellent condition when I met him and remained that was until we moved to a new home about six years ago. It was sitting over an A/C vent I do not know for sure but I believe that may have dried it out and caused the veneer to start chipping. If the right person knew how to fix or restore the veneer it would be perfect piece. The Green Italian Marble top is in pristiene condition. as are the drawers, legs and ornate brass fixtures. I think the wood tabs glued at the back are wider in this drawer and it is an easy fix. These were used in a mortuary for over 80 years. Tops are inlaid. There are two drawers each. Very exquisite. I am always on the lookout round my French antique markets for these early French textile boudoir boxes. But rarely come across one's in the form of a chest of drawers, this is such a beautiful example and in quite good condition commensurate with it's age, it does not look like it has had much use at all and the simply divine early fabric is still bright without fading, I adore this pretty early fabric with it's bold black background that really sets off the lovely soft colours of the many exquisite flowers, the sweet metal handles are all original to the drawers, structurally it is still good and strong and very useable, it stands on four turned wooden feet. The legs have an exaggerated dimension to their side profiles. The front of the chest has 2 drawers with a"hidden" pull out door. The remain three sides of the chest have a gorgeous, convex and concave design to their panels with the center of each panel having a circular, convex center. The legs, the drawers and the front door have hand carved(not perfect) notched details. The drawers have rather primitive dovetails. The door pulls out and is hinged. It almost"hangs" on the hinges when it is opened. This is a very elaborately carved piece with incredible character. It features French, Louis XV style with Chinoiserie elements. I believe, or similar, this one is extra large and would have been either a marriage chest or what is called'boite a' challs' to house cashmere and the like. The size is immense for a sewing box, though it is possible it might have been one in its origin. The cross-mounted silk ribbons in the interior lid is something we often see in the early ... moresewing boxes and is a way to tuck paper patterns in the cross-overs, as one might do with photos and memento, also. The box is truly a work of ebeniste's art, finest quality and in excellent form and condition. The hardware includes cast bronze paw feet and bouquet arched handle, all still in place and perfectly preserved. The lock appears to work, but we do not have a key to fit it at listing time. We try to have spare keys on hand and if we can match it either with something we have, or some we'll be buying while on buying trip, we'll annotate our listing to show it. Priced without key for now, however. The interior is as pretty as the exterior, and has no tears or holes in the silk, and no stains or odors. Would make a fabulous gift for anyone, male or female, as it is a brilliant tabletop box for display in even the most opulently appointed home or office. Note that it is fully 12.5" long and 9" wide.
