The paint has a nice crakling affect as well, which really adds to its vintage patina. I am unsure of its actual age, but it was manufactured by Peck & Hills Furniture Company. It has four drawers, all quite large, and a design that gives it a "chest on chest" appearance. The chest of drawers has a gorgeous fan motif pediment at the top of the back trim, and bracket feet at the bottom. The drawers have the original drop pull brass handles.

The chest has a polished pink granite top that just simply sits on top and has mitered angle corners. There are a couple of small chips in the granite at the edges. I am unsure of the age of the chest but would guess that it dates to 1920s to 1940 at the latest. It has glass drawer pulls, and has dovetail joints on the drawers, as well as a complex dovetail joint at the top, joining the framework together. The chair shown is offered elsewhere in our collection Item# 110105PII25 This is a remarkably preserved English Chippendale Period Kneehole Desk. Circa 1740-50. It is crafted of well figured solid single boards of Mahogany on the top and sides- there is no veneer on this desk, just solid boards of full grain mahogany. A simply molded edge runs the perimeter of the top, each corner scalloped. Each drawer is hand dovetailed front and back, with thin oak frame construction and thin oak drawer bottoms- all drawers are fully original and lack any adjustments and restorations to the secondary construction. Glowing hand forged brass hardware adorns each drawer. Appearing to have never been removed from the piece. Inside each drawer, as well as the tiny door in the kneehole area, silver metal locks are secured and functional. Each lock appears to be original, each uniquely cut on the right hand corner for all small drawers- it would appear the craftsman was presented with the challenge of making the lock of his choice fit the small space in conjunction with the pull hardware, and overcame this but cutting the corners of each lock. Hand made screws are visible throughout the lock hardware. While we cannot say for certain if the key is original, it is of the period, hand made and very similar in metal color to that of the locks. Each drawer is lip-molded and slides flawlessly in and out of the desk. Just below the top drawer is a secret drawer compartment. Appearing to be part of the frame design, but actually pulls outward smoothly as an extra hand dovetailed drawer. This is a unique addition for the craftsman to make, as many of these knee hole desks are without such innovations. The wide top drawer pulls out to reveal a full dust shelf. Measures 32" W x 19" D x 44 1/2" H(49" in back) I do know that the craftsmanship is phenomenal and the fit and finish is beautiful. The piece is in average condition with some scratches and wood chipped off in places. I'm guessing the extra compartment on top was a jewelry box. The wheels are made of wood suggesting it is very old indeed. The handcarved overlays are awesome. Two drawer handles are missing. This is a very nice hand painted chest of drawers with a writing desk to the top drawer. To the front it has superb carving with carved pillars to either side. Under the paint work is walnut. The drawers are solid wood with dovetail joints. The desk interiors is satinwood with a secret compartment with a slide over the top. There is a marble to the top. French Louis XVI Secrétaire à Abattant 19th Century. Carved Fruitwood w/ Marble Top Item# 120010TTT02 This gorgeous drop-lid carved fruitwood desk. Featuring a pierced brass gallery wrapping around shaped marble with turret corners over fluted fruitwood pillars with brass mounts. The drawer has original brass hardware with a strong lock in the middle, the keyhole a four-leaf clover lock guard, limiting the keys that can access the hole- this lock mechanism is mirrored on the drop-lid and on the pair of cabinet doors. The lid drops to reveal six small drawers and a few cubby-holes, all of the drawers hand dovetailed front and back, the bottoms bevelled to rabbet into the sides. The lower cabinet opens to reveal a locking box, key absent, the box somewhat destabalized due to a missing block on the right side. Beautiful Antique Japanese Tansu Document Chest, Japan, Drawers, Small Dresser
Up for auction is this beautiful antique Tansu document chest! This chest just has a fantastic look to it. The size of it is 23 inches long by 18 inches tall by 11 inches deep. All the hardware seems to be made of old copper. And I'm not sure what type of wood it is made from. I believe this chest is about 100 to 120 years old, but I'm not sure. The guy I bought it from said it was brought to the United States in the 1950's. As you can see from the pictures, the chest does show wear. The top especially shows wear from things being set on top of it over all the years. Also the wood on the front of the drawers shows wear from all the years of hands reaching in to the handles. There are 3 locks on the chest, but unfortunately I don't have the key. All the drawers open just fine. One of the sliding doors works great, and the other ... moreis a bit stiff. The chamfered and fluted corners flank the drawers. Each fully serpentine in form. The flamed mahogany veneers framed in cockbead molding applied around the edges of the drawer, hiding the dovetail construction of the drawers on the front. Antique Japanese Calligraphy Portable Chest 11inx7.5inx8in 3 Drawers & Lift Top
DESCRIPTION I am a 12 year veteran buyer/seller on Ebay. Now selling twice a year. In October and April. Most listings are antique or vintage Asian pieces with a few vintage European decorative items. I will have some vintage fine gold and silver jewelry as well. My 30 listings this month will be available till April 28th. A wonderful Meiji portable chest meant for caligraphy. Built with hardwood of the best quality. Called zelkova, from the Japanese serrata elm tree family. The grain is a warm brown with lighter tan striations and curves. The metal ware is copper cut in simple designs except for the front pieces of the three drawers and ornate lock. This piece was varnished originally. And was cleaned off and revarnished more recently. You can see the darker tones around the metal pieces. It measures 11 inches long by 8 inches high by 7.5 ... moreinches wide. There are three drawers of different sizes that fit snugly all the way across the chest. The top is hinged with a working round snap latch. That is pushed in to lift the lid using the handle. It covers another compartment finished in black enamel, that will accomodate the larger calligraphy tools. This pieces was acquired at an American auction and that time it was indicated that it belonged to the Takeda family estate. The base is marked with a logo representing a mountain and a symbol underneath, this was burned in the surface. Condition is very good but not perfect. I think if you compare it to similar pieces from the same period of mid-Meiji period or 1885. It is a collectable item with no major issues. As stated, a revarnish was done at some point which removed the wood`s dark patina as well as the copper`s. If left alone, all surfaces would be evenly dark. All the metal surfaces are clean and smooth with no errosion. A few copper head nails are missing and the lock`s key is missing. The smallest drawer at top right shows signs of a black ink spill on the left side(see images) The wood is in good shape. The lid has a bit of warping on the left edge as most

American Chippendale Walnut Chest of Drawers. Pennsylvania Late 18th Century c. 1770-90 Over Ball and Claw front feet Item# 130204PTP08 This is a fine American Chippendale Walnut Tall Chest of Drawers. Crafted in Pennsylvania during the height of the Chippendale Period c. 1770-90. The construction of the chest is dominated by an unusual joinery, almost certainly placing it in the shop of a rural craftsman somewhat removed from the influence of the trade. Most tall chests in this form of the period are joined using a thick poplar top dovetailed to the sides of the case, backboards that are chamfered into the top and rosehead nailed in orderly grids, the rear foot supports often a separate triangular secondary wood bracing the rear foot facings, the bottom board thick poplar faced by a generous blade of solid walnut and will rest over bold ... moreand large ogee bracket feet; rather atypical, the top board of this chest dovetailing to the sides of the case is somewhat thin(and was supported with an added top board as a result) the backboards"nailed" to the chest using wooden pegs secured in orderly grids, the stiles(or right-most and left-most backboards) extending down as the braces of the rear foot facings, the bottom board a thick poplar plank that was faced by a 1/16" thick strip of walnut veneer around all sides and resting over rather unusual(but fully original) front ball and claw feet and odd bracket rear feet. The use of the veneered strip around the bottom is almost an afterthought, suggesting that the craftsman changed his approach late in the design; he may originally have been planning the gadrooned molding as the finishing for this edge, but realized that this would leave little room for strength in the ball and claw feet. The decision process around it is certainly open to speculation, but in any event is certainly a depiction of a craftsman who was not familiar with designing this form. A barrel shaped drawer tops three smaller drawers. All finely dovetailed. The wonderful pressed glass knobs are original and add a little sparkle when the light hits them. The lower drawers are designed to open only when the top drawer is opened. When the top drawer is locked the entire case is secured.I do have the very nice steel& brass key) The face of the drawers is veneered in flame mahogany. The sides and top are solid woods. The case sits atop four turned ball feet. This chest is in very good overall condition with light wear and an older refinish. There are two small chips in the veneer. The screw in one of those knobs has been replaced. Measurements are: 18.5" wide, 12" deep and 17.5" tall. This piece is wonderful size to put to use as a chair side table. Collectors Set- Family Heirloom Chest& Vanity has been in one family since the 1930's and may predate that time. Handled gently. The Thomasville Emblem can be found inside some of the drawers. The model number stamped on the back of each piece is L-553. The wood is in amazing condition and has never been refinished.
