Offered for auction is a fabulous early twentieth century handmade goat hair rug/blanket. It is 100% natural with no dyes. It dates back to the early twentieth century. And is in very good condition, overall. I believe it to be from the 1920's based on the estate they were purchased from. But am not certain. The natural red has a beautiful faux-pile made of genuine goat hair. The top is a nice shaggy look. Great for a simple rug. It looks fabulous on a hardwood floor or in a cabin. If you ever wanted a fur rug this is the piece for you! They are also used as blankets. Though I feel it would be rather itchy. It does look amazing draped at the end of the bed or over a chair. It measures 50 inches x 75 inches. There are tassels of the twine at the ends. They show the yellowing of their age. However. This blanket has no bad odors. Indigenous Native American weft-faced textile. Region: The greater Rio Mayo region. In the State of Sinaloa including the Yaqui, Fuerte and Sinaloa rivers and including the very southern part of the state of Sonora. Culture: Mayo. Approximate Age: Early-20th century. Materials: Handspun natural and dyed sheep wool. Approximate Size: 69 inches by 55 inches. Colors: As in the photos. Condition: Very good. Used condition. There are a few light surface use-stains on one side. Apparently both ends have been very slightly shortened; the warp threads were expertly and professionally reinserted and the edges were sewn down with fine thread. The dyed salmon and yellow colors have faded from age. ... moreThe textile is basically bright and clean. Remarks: This special lot consists of a beautiful antique Mayo Indian blanket of historic style dating to the early-20th century. This one somewhat resembles historic Rio Grande weavings from New Mexico and Colorado. The serrated central diamond is especially large. The vertical side bands include finely serrated zigzags and rows of diamonds in various shades of brown and faded purple(probably originally blue) The dark brown(nearly black in some areas) center field is filled with winged serrated diamonds. Some in two or more colors. The wool is relatively long staple churro nicely woven with about 14 warps per inch and 18 wefts per inch. Although the thread count is quite variable. Retaining the original reddish stain. Does have age appropriate expected wear. Measures 38" long, 16" wide and 1" high and has a early hinged lift lid top. In colonial America, blanket chests were constructed of various species of lumber ranging from inexpensive pines used for"country" type furniture to more expensive hardwoods such as walnut, cherry, and imported mahogany. The latter were used for more formal pieces of furniture that only the very wealthy could afford. As early as 1660, craftsmen in Massachusetts and Connecticut were fashioning paneled and carved oak chests, constructed of wide stiles and rails. These had ... morefloating panels with elaborately carved intaglio decorations. Instead of a paneled top in the English fashion, the Colonial chest had a plain pine board top. This unadorned top surface was ideal for seating and did not need cushions thereby making it more functional. In their crude fashion, these chests were the counterpart of the elaborate cas, armoires, and caskets owned throughout Europe by wealthy families. Many households would not do without one of these blanket chests as few homes had a source of heat within the bedroom. On chilly nights it was convenient to merely go to the end of the bed and extract more bed covers to keep warm. Antique 1913 Peru Native Indian Woven Saltillo Serape- Memorial Blanket/Rug( I found this beautiful blanket at a local thrift. I know nothing about it's exact age or history. I have only been able to translate some of the words. It appears to be woven from wool. In two sections, and joined together in the center. It is in fair condition. The center stitching is coming undone in places. There a several small holes, and pet hairs present. I am guessing it has been washed.
