1813 - 1914 World War I - German Iron Cross Medal 2nd Class
1813- 1914 World War I- German Iron Cross Pendent 2 nd Class Since this one does not have a clasp. I assume that it would be the 2 nd class Overall condition is very good considering the age. But of course there are some minor age spots. I do not know enough about these medals. But following is what I have found during research. The medal was designed by noted architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel. It was a simple blackened iron cross. With continuous silver trim around the edge. One face had a simple oak leaf sprig in the center, with 1813 on the lower arm, and the Royal Cipher"FW" and a crown in the upper arm, the other face was blank. Until 1838, the blank face was the official front side of the medal, when the practice of wearing the medal with the face bearing the oak leaves outward was approved. Three grades of the medal were ... moreinstituted. The Grosskreuz(Grand Cross) for senior commanders; and the 1 Klasse(1st Class) And 2 Klasse(2nd Class) For individual merit in combat. The size of the 1st and 2nd class awards was about 42mm, and examples range from 28-42mm. The 1st class medal had loops welded to the rear side, so it could be sewn to the tunic. The 2nd class medal was suspended by a ribbon ring attached to an eye welded to the top of the medal. The ribbon was black with two white edge stripes. The state colors of Prussia. A non-combatant version was also issued, it's ribbon was white with two black edge strips. The Grand Cross was a larger version of the award, about 62mm in size. It was worn at the neck and suspended by a wider version of the 2nd class ribbon. Little change would be made to these medals during the following 100 years. Imperial German Medal Bar - Order of the Red Eagle / Order of the Crown
For sale. An Imperial German Medal Bar consisting of the following: Order of the Red Eagle 4th Class, Order of the Crown 4th Class, Kaiser Wilhelm I Commemorative medal. The medals show wear from age. Both orders are multi-piece construction. The Red Eagle Order has a sliver frame with the maker name“ZEHN” between the arms of the cross. The centerpiece appears to be hand painted. The Crown Order shows some finish degradation to the gilt. The enamel on the obverse is excellent while the reverse has a very slight chip near the“Den” of the logo. The gilt finish on the Kaiser Wilhelm medal is almost all gone. The ribbon of the Eagle Order shows thinning at the top and near the ribbon fold by the ring. There is wear and thinning on the other two ribbons but not as severe as the Eagle Order. Beautiful vintage East German medal in its own case. The medal is golden colored. On one side of the medal is a symbol of engineering or something to that affect. Around this symbol are words"fur den schutz. der arbeiter und bauern-macht. One the other side of the medal is a profile of an East German soldier with the familiar helmet. Around this soldier are words" reservist der nationalen volksarmee" which is assumed means reservist for the national army. Very beautiful medal which is assumed to be something to do with work in the military. The medal comes in its original plastic case.
