The medal which appear to be of white metal with a bronze center. Depicts a scene of a hunter with his dog taking aim at flying birds with pie trees and mountains in the fore ground. The medal has the following words in German"Wanderschutzen Riedenzhofen bei Rohrmoos" which we were able to translate to"Protect Migratory Riedenzhofen(a type of bird) in Rohrmoos(a town in Germany) There is an oval metal plaque, which has a pin on its back, with the following words on it 3. INT. WANDERTAG 1973, which suggests that this was the third international hiking event, which took place in 1973. We have attempted to research the ... moreevent but were unsuccessful, so we leave this to the next owner. This is really a nice and heavy metal which would make a worthy addition to any collection. Artist: Unknown Weight and Size: The medal(the bottom portion of the ribbon) is ~2 1/2" by 2" The top oval piece ~1 3/4" by 1 1/4" and the entire piece is about 5 1/4" long. The piece weighs about 2.9 ounces. Marks: Unmarked. Maker: Unknown. Condition: The piece is in excellent condition. I would grade the medal as uncirculated with a beautiful brilliant finish. GERMAN SOLDIER BEING HUSTLED INTO A COFFIN, Macabre WW1 medal, EXCELLENT Cond
I CANNOT SAY I HAVE EVER SEEN A MEDAL LIKE THIS BEFORE. RATHER MACABRE. BUT VERY RARE. It is uniface. Of silvered bronze, and shows a German soldier with picklehauser helmet being hustled into a coffin by two Allied soldiers, French and British, with the date 1914/5, so it was issued early in the war when confidence was high. The engraving of the figures is superb, very sharp and incisive, and the medal has a fine patina. DIAMETER 1.1" 27mm. A rare and historic medal in EXCELLENT condition and complete with its original tricolour ribbon. A chilling reminder of that greatest of all conflicts. The First World War. P&P £2.00.
