Very Nice Antique French Viola c. 1920s-Expertly set up, Ready-to-Play!
This very nice antique French viola is offered to the highest bidder with no reserve. The viola measures 15 1/4 inches or 384 mm. The instrument was most likely made in Mirecourt. France in the 1920s. It is probable that it was made at either the workshop of Laberte/Humbert or the larger firm of Jerome Thibouville Lamy. Both firms marketed various grades of instruments to American dealers under a wide variety of trade names and labels. While certain models can be positively identified for the most part, the work from both shops was often indistinguishable and sometimes produced by the same journeyman violin makers. This is example is in excellent original condition without any cracks or repairs other than an obvious. Old and well-done head graft. The viola has been expertly set up has new Pirastro Tonica stings and is ready-to-play. The instrument ... moreis very attractive with a nut brown varnish that is at once both warm and delightfully transparent and clean. There are some minor nicks and scratches that add to the viola's beautiful antique appearance. The woods are very good. With highly flamed maple for the back matching the ribs. The top is old, tight grained spruce, widening toward the flanks, with prominent bear claw figure. The back measures 15 1/4 inches or 384 mm. The viola is very responsive and has a wide dynamic range. It produces a clean clear sound with the lightest bow and has plenty of reserve power when pressed hard. The tone is clear and clean without being stridently bright, but it is so responsive and clear that it cannot really be called dark either. This viola has nice balance and is even across the strings. If you have been looking for a better grade of transitional, smaller-sized viola, something well-suited for advanced demands, this viola is an excellent choice. Rare vintage original circa 1920s to 30s French Art Pottery- stamped CREATION- RENE COMBEAU- PARIS Made in France. Glove- either calling card receiver or ashtray Measures approx 8-3/8" long and weighs just under 2 lbs. It is in Excellent Condition- no breaks.No cracks,no repairs,etc. There is some normal light crazing in the glaze. I think this is either a Calling Card Receiver used in some sort of business- possibly a clothing store or the like. It could also be used as an ashtray. Rene Combeau was evidently a French Inventor of sorts and is known to be the designer of a Dunhill Cigarette Lighter- named the SPORTS COMBO after the inventor COMBEAU. This is the most beautiful. Vintage panel of French fabric that I bought several years ago at the Monday Fleamarket in Nice, in the South of France. It dates from the 1920s. An elegant. Unpatterned, slightly rasised design in rich gold. It measures 70 inches long x 45 inches wide. And is in excellent condition with hardly any sign of wear or fading.
