Essentially the same low-fired enamels were now used with such authority that Qing polychrome-decorated porcelains outshine all others. The stellar polychrome decoration of the Kangxi period, the famille verte palette of enamels, takes its name from several distinctive shades of green that are ... morealmost invariably present in the color scheme. Famille verte enamels are brightly colored and translucent: they have been applied rather thickly over the darker outlines and details. In addition to the various greens, the famille verte colors include yellow; aubergine; coral-toned iron-red(rather flat and almost opaque) white(achieved by allowing the pure body to show through a clear enamel) and black(a composite color made of matte brownish black pigment covered with green, aubergine, or clear enamel) The blue enamel in this assortment of colors is different from the Ming-dynasty turquoise-tinted blue enamel; it is more violet or royal blue in tone. Finely hand carved and exhibiting sublime attention to detail including wonderful expression, flowing robes, and individually strung prayer beads. The Budai's posture is absolutely remarkable, with a solid, grounded feel, apparent especially from the side view. From any angle, he exudes a sense of joyful serenity. The carver was a master of the human form, with refined skill reflected in the way the robes fall around the rotund belly, the posture of the shoulders and the back of the thick neck, and the way he holds the bag and beads effortlessly, as if fully relaxed. Antique carved figure of Buddha. Natural jade. Made in China during the Qing dynasty. 1644-1911. Measurements: approximately 1 5/8 inches(41mm) tall and 1 5/16 inches(34mm) wide. Weighs 26.3grams. Carved from a single piece of jade. The seated Buddha in lotus position with crossed hands. Flowing robes beautifully depicted as are wonderful details to face. The jade is a light green, mostly uniform in color with a tiny bit of yellow-brown tinge at the very edge of the robe. Jade has a beautiful translucent quality. Fine patina. Marks: none. This is a genuine 18th century Chinese Schist Stone Head from the Qing Dynasty. They ruled China from 1644-1911, this would have been from the height and middle of their rule based from the detail on the specimen, dating to 1750- to early 1800s. A rarely offered and museum quality specimen. And I've seen 1 or 2 similar to this on display in a few museums. Try to find another for sale online, only other reference is someone else's private collection. a very uncommon piece. This is straight from my collection, always well stored, any dings etc were as given to me, all evident in the photos, but then again, this is 300 years old. either way, a very striking display or collection specimen. Measures: 5"h X 3.5"w Weight: 2 lbs 12 oz"Schist" refers to the type of stone made to create this bust. A common mix of quartz ... moreand grey stone, cut and polished then by hand. Known as the Gautama"Shakyamuni" Buddha. The face is supposed to express the"moment of awakening/enlightenment" the meaning of the word Buddha is"awakened one" so Gautama Buddha represents the first enlightened one, whose teachings all Buddhism is founded. Note that the left side of the face is blackened from years of candle and incense soot. Imagine the how many candles. Prayers, incense were burnt for this piece. Amazing history with these when they come up. This has not been mounted ever. Up for auction we have an outstanding Qing Dynasty 1644-1912 Chinese Seated Bronze Buddha. A MAGNIFICENT GILT-BRONZE SEATED FIGURE CHINA. QING DYNASTY, AND OF THE PERIOD(1644-1912) The Buddha is seated in dhyanasana on a double-lotus base, with the left hand in dhyanamudra holding a bowl filled with myrobalan fruit, and the right hand extended in varadamudra, holding a single myrobalan fruit between the thumb and index finger. The figure wears layered monk's robes that fall in crisp, elegant folds around the body. The face is finely cast with a serene expression, and the hair is dressed in tight curls that also cover the ushnisha below a globular jewel. This article came from the John R. Chinese gilt wood Weituo Pusa temple guardian statue; probably Qing Dynasty
Antique Chinese Carved Gilt wood and Red Lacquer Weituo Pusa( Buddhist Temple Guardian Statue- possibly Qing Dynasty Description: An exquisite. Large and finely carved gilt wood Chinese Weituo Pusa Buddhist temple guardian figure. This masterfully executed statue is covered almost entirely in gilding. When I first acquired the piece. I assumed that the gilding was worn away in spots, revealing a black primer undercoat. Later, it occurred to me that perhaps the black was on top of the gold-not under it. I did a small sample cleaning with alcohol(about the size of a quarter on an inconspicuous area) And sure enough-the black, though tar-like and stubborn, came off to reveal bright gold underneath. My conclusion-which the winning bidder may easily corroborate for themselves by repeating my test-is that the entire statue, with the exception of ... morethe base and some red lacquered areas, is gilded. This practice of painting wood with gold-based paint is consistent with Buddhist temple statues, and provides both majesty and protection to the figure. The expected wear, deterioration and insect damage usually expected of old wood is largely avoided on gilded pieces which have the benefit of a surface that is impervious to moisture and never oxidizes. As for the massive accumulation of black sooty deposits-if you have ever been in a Buddhist temple, you know that this is almost certainly the result of long exposure to burning candles and incense. Another remarkable detail is the fact that the lips and inside of the robes(visible on the sleeves and folds) are coated not in gilding, but in rich, red lacquer. Before the soot accumulated on this statue, it would have been entirely gold, on a blackened base, with red accents, as noted. The combination of fine hand carving on a large scale, covered in gilding with accents of red lacquer and the whole cloaked in tarry soot deposits add up in my mind to a genuine surface. This is an antique Chinese porcelain statue that represents Shoulao(Deity of Longevity) Most probably. This statue was produced in the 1900s-1920s. This statue is very exquisitely made, and the colors are very vibrant. on the bottom are a production mark in Chinese(茂生记造) and two old"China" marks,which indicates that this is a Chinese export item during the above-mentioned period. The overall condition of the statue is superb. But there is a tiny enamel loss(please see photo#4) which is probably a manufacturing defect rather than a condition issue. Dimension: 8 inches in height; 5 1/2 inches in width; 2 1/2 inches in depth. Please note: Nowadays the shipping charges are very high.
