This hand would have been taken from a quite large Buddha Statue years ago and mounted on the wooden piece it is on today. I can not read it. Large and finely carved gilt wood Chinese Weituo Pusa Buddhist temple guardian figure. This masterfully executed statue is covered almost entirely in gilding. When I first acquired the piece. I assumed that the gilding was worn away in spots, revealing a black primer undercoat. Later, it occurred to me that perhaps the black was on top of the gold-not under it. I did a small sample cleaning with alcohol(about the size of a quarter on an inconspicuous area) And sure enough-the black, though tar-like and stubborn, came off to reveal bright gold underneath. My conclusion-which the winning bidder may easily corroborate for themselves by repeating my test-is that the entire statue, with ... morethe exception of the base and some red lacquered areas, is gilded. This practice of painting wood with gold-based paint is consistent with Buddhist temple statues, and provides both majesty and protection to the figure. The wear, deterioration and insect damage usually expected of old wood is largely avoided on gilded pieces which have the benefit of a surface that is impervious to moisture and never oxidizes. As for the massive accumulation of black sooty deposits-if you have ever been in a Buddhist temple, you know that this is almost certainly the result of long exposure to burning candles and incense. Another remarkable detail is the fact that the lips and inside of the robes(visible on the sleeves and folds) are coated not in gilding, but in rich, red lacquer. Before the soot accumulated on this statue, it would have been entirely gold, on a blackened base, with red accents, as noted. The combination of fine hand carving on a large scale, covered in gilding with accents of red lacquer and the whole cloaked in tarry soot deposits add up in my mind to a genuine surface. This is a interesting Buddha. He is a Buddha alright, because some Buddhas have a hole for prayer. He has a hole on the back, but don't know why he lost his left arm, right hand and left foot. They don;t like natural damages. Some one must have abuse him. It looks the damage happened many years ago. Some one has paint the wound. But,anyway, he is still a Buddha. My altar has a little 10th century Cambodian Buddha, it doesn't have bottom half. I don't feel anything wrong there. This Buddha measures 11"H x 5"W x 4-3/4"Deep.
