Antique Chinese man with a scroll from the 19th-20th century. The story behind this statue: My Godmother's great uncle was a lawyer during WW2 and a Chinese man asked him for help with his citizenship because Chinese-americans were under great pressure to leave the states. He had no money to pay the lawyer so he gave him this statue as collateral until he could return with money. My Godmother's great uncle represented him but he never had enough money to pay the lawyer to get his Buddha back. The Chinese man told the lawyer that the statue had been in his family for years and when he had it shipped over here from his family. Apparently this was very common during this period of uncertainty during the second world war. I have done some research on it and it was definitely manufactured during the republic period and it was either manufactured ... moreby Mao Ji Sheng or Youlongsheng. Both famous craftsman during this period. It is signed but I do not read Chinese so I cannot decipher the symbols. ALSO, the family who owns this(my God-mother and her 3 children) do not want the statute because they believe it is haunted. They could not give me any specific reason but none of them want this statute in their home. I feel like this is important to mention because I do not want any one to get more than they bargained for. There will be no returns because they are anxious to get rid of it and I most certainly do not want to find out if it is haunted! Hotei and the 5 playing boys weigh nearly 7 pounds! I was told the signature impressed at the bottom is a Wei Hong Tai Mark? and it is an early 1900s piece following the Qing Dynasty, hence, the Chinese Republic Period. I purchased this item at an auction that had Asian antiques from a collector in PA. Please inspect the pictures. It is in excellent condition, no scratches, chips, or cracks. This is an antique Chinese porcelain statue that portrays Emperor Kangxi. Most probably. This statue was made in the 1900s-1920s. This statue is very exquisitely made, and the colors are very vibrant. On the bottom are a production mark(福建会馆游长子玉记造) and a Kangxi(康熙)mark in Chinese,which indicates that it was made by the top pott er- artist in China of the above-mentioned period. The overall condition of the statue is superb. No chips or hairlines. Dimension: about 17 1/2 inches in height. Old Chinese porcelain statues/figurines have many reproductions/knock-offs. Especial in the past couple of years. But since this particular potter-artist hand-made his wares, that makes it a tremendous challenge to copy his works. The reproductions are easy to identify if a collector focuses on these factors: a) Is the body of the statue in natural, shapely ... moreproportion? Reproductions are almost always in poor proportion. b) Is the glaze made from minerals? Reproductions use the kind of chemical glaze that is too smooth and has no shades of color? c) Is the figurine large in size?
