It may be early 19th century, 18th century, or even Ming Dynasty. I don't know how to date it exactly, but to me the simplicity and stylization of the figure indicates Ming sculptural ideas. This is a very rare depiction known as'The Birth of Buddha' featuring a Bronze infant Buddha. Also know as Buddha taking his first steps. Just after his birth. Buddha stands upright naked and bald-headed on a round lotus base. Buddha is posed with his right arm and hand pointing to the earth, his left arm is raised and the hand points to the sky. Buddha has a nice serene face with almond-shaped eyes, a pointed nose and smiling mouth, earlobes are slightly prolonged. Clearly seen are his nipples and the navel and the genitals ... moreare unseen. The color of the metal varies from a dark chocolate brown to a green spotted patina which can only be seen on bronzes of this age. The base is hollow and has trace of a black core. Ming Dynasty or Earlier Chinese Carved Wooden Sculpture of Guanyin Kwan Yin
Important Bodhisattva Carved Polychrome Wood Ming Dynasty(1368- 1644) Shown seated in dhyanasana on a rock-shaped base. Wearing a robe tied at the waist, a flowing shawl placed on the shoulders, adorned with a detailed necklace and bracelets, a tiara adorned with scrolling designs in a high stylized bun, the hands should be held in dhyana and abhaya mudra but one hand is missing. Condition: Both feet have had restoration work. There is some cracking due to age and dryness. There is a crack on both sides of the draped fabric. There are losses and wear to the carving. This carving and artistic style is very similar to the carvings from Song. Jin and Liao Dynasties. I have not had the carving radio carbon dated for a few reasons. You need to select an area that has not had restorations. This means the sculpture would need to undergo an X-radiograph ... moreto determine which areas were original(likely the underside of the base) I spoke with several laboratories and universities that didn't feel this would give me an accurate determination due to the possibility that the wood could be older than the carving. Notes: This piece comes from a prominent estate in Greenwich. CT and the owners purchased the sculpture approximately twenty years ago from Bonham's. Guarranteed authentic: Antique Sancai-glazed figure of Buddha. Made in China. During the Ming Dynasty, 1368-1644. Measures approx 9 3/4 iches(24cm) high. Seated on a rounded rectangular base. Modelled like a stone wall. The Buddha sits cross-legged on a lotus throne with beautifully draped robes, forming sinuous patterns. Crossed hands with great charm to the individually modelled fingers- note the curved pinkie of the left hand. Fine facial features and beautifully patterned hair. Long lobes to ears. Bare right arm with bracelets on the wrist. Condition is good. Especially considering the age.
