JAPANESE VINTAGE SATSUMA IMARI CERAMIC DRAGON BUDDHIST MONKS KWAN YIN VESSEL
This is a Satsuma style ceramic sugar bowl with designs of a Japanese dragon. Kwan Yin, and Buddhist priests. The shape of the dragon with raised white droplets as scales is coiled around the outside of the pot in heavy relief. His head forms the finial. This multi-color glazed ceramic pot dates to the early Showa Era(c.1930) and. Having been in storage for nearly a century, aside from a minor surface irregularity on the lid(see picture 4) remains in excellent condition. Satsuma imari is one of the more elaborate and collectible of the Japanese kilns and dates to from the late Edo Era(c.1850) This dragon bowl required multiple firings with the various detailed colorful glazes. Several of the colored glazes are raised and form a rich textural relief to the surface. The gold color is applied before the final firing. One was postally used from China, two were used from China but the stamp is missing, and two were used in the U.S. The postcards in scans 2 and 3 do not have standard postcard backs. The back has a printed caption. But no center line or stamp box. Turned from a single piece of soft wood and stained a dark brown, the side slightly curving inward at the rim, the foot plain and pronounced. Of a style used by Buddhist monks in Asia begging their daily meals, however, the lack of staining and use would suggest that this item may never have been used for that purpose though it retains the shape.
