So, I know it is at least older than the 1850's and it was probably brought from China by an early Chinese worker who came to California during, or just after the Gold Rush. It may be early 19th century, 18th century, or even Ming Dynasty. I don't know how to date it exactly, but to me the simplicity and stylization of the figure indicates Ming sculptural ideas. The photos should help those more knowledgeable to know the age and origin. AGE: Unknown- pre-1860. Possibly 18th century or Ming Dynasty period. CONDITION: Good condition. I am assuming there were articles of jewelry or things placed around the neck area which wore away the surface wood. It can easily be touched up but I have chosen to leave it for its new owner. This way the underside of the actual wood can be seen and it appears to possibly be rosewood as it has a light pinkish cast. It was bought many years ago from an antique shop in Warwick. Warwickshire( selling other Asian antiques) The white marble Burmese buddha is in very good condition for its age with no chips to the Buddha's face or body and only age related wear/ loss to the base he is sitting on. We are not sure if it is gold over bronze. As there is silver showing through on the wear points on the thumb and nose. It is very high quality with nice detail. It dates from the 19th Century, possibly earlier and measures approximately 1 + 7/8 inches tall by 1 + 3/8 inches by an inch front to back. Huge Antique 19th Century Burmese Buddha, Solid Wood w/ Base, 47", 132 lbs
This is an incredible find. It is a huge antique 19th Century Chinese or Burmese hand carved wooden statue of Buddha that comes with a Western Victorian era base. This would make a wonderful addition to a Yoga studio. Meditation center, restaurant or home. It came from the home of a collector of antique Asian antiques. The statue is hand carved from a very dense and heavy wood that we believe to be mahogany. It has a dark finish, so it is difficult to be sure on the type of wood. The piece weighs over 132 pounds, including the base, and measures 47" tall. The Buddha is seated in the lotus position with one arm raised. The carving on the face, feet, hands and statue base are excellent. The Victorian stand is made to the period with many joined pieces of wood and molding. The statue itself measures approximately 35" tall, 22" ... morewide and 15" deep. It weighs 110 pounds. The stand measures approximately 12" tall, 25" wide and 16 1/2" deep. It weighs 22 1/2 pounds. The statue is in excellent condition for it's age except for some fading to the finish along the edges and raised edges. The back shows some fading, probably from the sun. There is some minor cracking from age, especially to the back(see Pictures) The stand is in very good shape except for a stress crack across the front board(see picture) This piece is heavy and awkward, so it must be either picked up in Philadelphia OR the bidders can contact us in advance for a professional shipping quote. We will also make deliveries ourselves within 100 miles or so of Philadelphia, for a fee. Moving the piece requires two people. Very beautiful antique late 19th century Chinese bronze depicting Buddha in a reclining position. The bronze is excellently made with fine workmanship on the hands. Face and overall form. The age of the bronze Buddha is 19th century and very well made. The bronze has it's original dark patina with some age ware which only adds to character. This is a beautiful 19th Century Mandalay period Bronze Buddha with hands in Bhumisparsha Mudra. Sanghati robe over one shoulder, elongate ear lobes set behind hair in ushnisha. The Statue still has its original enamelled inlaid eyes. The Buddha is sat on integral plinth this is a typical style for this period. The Bronze has a fine age patination in very good condition for the age of the Buddha with no damage or cracks to the bronze casting but does have some small ware marks to the figure that would be found on most old used Statues.
