DESCRIPTION: Fine old bronze Buddha or Bodhisattva from China. Tibet, Nepal or other Asian region. This figure is quite beautiful with a very nice old patina of dark brown. Dark red, greens, etc. He is sitting, holding a bowl in one hand while reaching into it with the other. His head appears to be shaved and he is wearing a simple robe. The statue is nicely cast, with good detail and a fine clear and simple elegant design. I know this Buddha is very old because I bought it over 20 years ago from a contractor who was restoring an old 1850's building in'Old Town' Sacramento. California. ... moreHe found it partially imbedded in the original 1850's brickwork foundation that was being replaced. So, I know it is at least older than the 1850's and it was probably brought from China by an early Chinese worker who came to California during, or just after the Gold Rush. It may be early 19th century, 18th century, or even Ming Dynasty. I don't know how to date it exactly, but to me the simplicity and stylization of the figure indicates Ming sculptural ideas. The photos should help those more knowledgeable to know the age and origin. AGE: Unknown- pre-1860. Possibly 18th century or Ming Dynasty period. CONDITION: Good condition. I am assuming there were articles of jewelry or things placed around the neck area which wore away the surface wood. It can easily be touched up but I have chosen to leave it for its new owner. This way the underside of the actual wood can be seen and it appears to possibly be rosewood as it has a light pinkish cast. The buddha seems to have quite a bit of age.maybe 18th or 19th century but I am no expert in oriental antiques. It was bought many years ago from an antique shop in Warwick. Rare early 19th Century Chinese Hard stone Marble carved Buddha.
A very rare and absolutely beautiful Buddha carved from a very fine red mottled marble/hardstone. Dating from the early 19th century its a stunning piece of carving and very finely carved. It is clearly original. Its a beautifully carved item in its own right. The carving alone stands 17 cm and is 11 cm at the widest point. The head has been repaired which I didn't discover until I very closely examined it. Found during an estate clearance its a very scarce item and its beauty has to be seen to be appreciated.
