Tang Dynasty, 8th or 9th Century A.D. Possibly a Ming Dynasty or 18th or 19th Century Qing Dynasty Revival Imitative. SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Height: 151 millimeters(6 inches) Breadth: 81 millimeters(3 1/4 inches) Thickness: 82 millimeters(3 3/8 inches) CONDITION: Very good. No repairs but the majority of glaze is gone. A little wear and a few blemishes consistent with any decorative item which was buried for over one thousand years. Not flawless, but certainly in a better than average state of preservation– and unrepaired! Stands on its own. DETAIL: A nicely preserved clay statuette so wonderfully characteristic of Tang Dynasty statuary. Sancai. Or three-color glazes principally in yellow, green and brown was a development of the Tang Dynasty(618-907 AD) Sancai(three-colored" wares were first made for burial, using lead-based glazes that produced mottled and streaky effects in green, amber-brown, and cream, with an occasional addition of blue or black. There is one rim chip which was repaired by one of our conservators(visible as an unglazed spot along the rim) Normal tiny nicks and dings, all consistent with a ceramic utensil of this age, and the normal potting blemishes(glaze pits, etc. associated with hand production. Glaze is remarkable, almost entirely intact! DETAIL: A splendid. Very large black/brown glazed earthenware bowl in the style of the Song or Jin Dynasty of Ancient China. This particular style was produced using a black glaze, high in iron oxides. In the kiln the iron would oftentimes come to the surface of the glaze, creating brown/rust-colored“oil spots” or streaky“hare’s fur” patterns on the otherwise black glaze. The style became extremely popular in ancient China, especially with Japanese Monks to whom the Chinese exported this unique and rare product. Tea bowls were the most common produce of this technique. This particular bowl is a variation of this style, where rather than a large number of spots or drips, instead larger areas of high iron glaze were used to produce these large rust-colored streaks in the otherwise black-predominated glaze. Both the tea bowls, as well as larger sized bowls such as this are relatively rare. Both styles of tea bowls as well(oil spot” and“hare’s fur” are a very sought after variation of Song

A beautiful antique sculpture and fantastic display piece. Figures of this size seldom appear on the art market. Height: 36 inches Length 11.5" Width 9.5" Condition: Well preserved. The first Buddha statues were produced in about the 1st or 2nd century AD in Bactria(Afghanistan and northern Pakistan) perhaps as a result of Greek influence. And in Mathura. There is no standard way of representing the Buddha which may differ according to the artistic inspiration, the tastes or the iconographical canons of the different cultures in which they are produced. Some features however are common to most statues. The Buddha is depicted in one of several postures- standing, sitting in meditation mostly.Statues lying down ... moreare not of the Buddha sleeping, as is commonly supposed, but of him dying. The hands of the Buddha statues are shown in different gestures(mudra) each indicative of important things the Buddha did and which we should do also. The hands nestled in the lap suggest meditation. Held in front of the chest suggest teaching the Dhamma, one hand held up with the palm facing outwards suggests the giving of confidence or fearlessness. The ear lobes of the Buddha statues are nearly always shown elongated, this is indicative of renunciation in that while a layman, the Buddha wore large ear plugs which he stopped wearing when he became a monk, but which left his ear lobes stretched. It is often said that Buddhists worship statues. In the sense that they believe that Buddha statues actually are the Buddha or that they have some inherent power. But such ideas are quite incorrect. Buddhists do not'worship' Buddha statues any more than Christians worship the cross or Muslims the Kabba, which they face when they pray.
