Back in the day most people ... morewere treated for illness and died at home. Hospitals were not in widespread use and doctors and priests(Catholic and Anglican. And others) made house calls. It was fairly common for families to have such a"sick call shrine" to assist the priest in delivering the Sacrament to the sick and dying. The Holy Name Altar is one style of what is commonly called a Viaticum referring to the Bread of Life needed to make the journey to the afterlife. The Holy Name Altar was intended for ongoing devotions also and NOT just for times of illness or death The box is meant to be recessed into the wall(a wire hanger has been added to hang flat on the wall) It has a fold down altar held with a chain and features built in ornate candle stick holders on the sides. Most of these boxes are missing the candle stick holders. The upper part of the piece is a shadow box Pieta Shrine with Mary holding the sacrificed Jesus. The statue seems to be made of plaster or chalk ware and is enclosed in glass. It features reverse painting on glass with angels in the upper corners. Iconic symbols down the sides and the words"Blessed Be Thy Holy Name" at the bottom. I do not have any of the items that go in the box. 22 3/44" in height x 13" in width x 3 1/2" in depth It is in very good Antique Condition with a few minor scratches and some wear from age. Could use a little bit of cleaning.Please see the pictures. Thanks for looking!

Up for Auction Is: The Holy Name Alter& Sick Call Outfit Antique Oak Home Last Rites Box Patented 1909 by Koenig Bros. Back in the day most people were treated for illness and died at home. Hospitals were not in widespread use and doctors and priests(Catholic and Anglican. And others) made house calls. It was fairly common for families to have such a"sick call shrine" to assist the priest in delivering the Sacrament to the sick and dying. The Holy Name Altar is one style of what is commonly called a Viaticum referring to the Bread of Life needed to make the journey to the afterlife. The Holy Name Altar was intended for ongoing devotions also and NOT just for times of illness or death The box is meant to be recessed into the wall(a wire hanger has been added to hang flat on the wall) It has a fold down altar held with a chain ... moreand features built in ornate candle stick holders on the sides. Most of these boxes are missing the candle stick holders. The upper part of the piece is a shadow box Pieta Shrine with Mary holding the sacrificed Jesus. The statue seems to be made of plaster or chalk ware and is enclosed in glass. It features reverse painting on glass with angels in the upper corners. Iconic symbols down the sides and the words"Blessed Be Thy Holy Name" at the bottom. I do not have any of the items that go in the box. 22 3/44" in height x 13" in width x 3 1/2" in depth It is in very good Antique Condition with a few minor scratches and some wear from age. Up for bids is a old Viaticum Kit. Case is made of what looks to be plywood and is covered with some kind of leather type material. Top of case has a gold cross that is part of the covering(Not a metal cross tacked on) Bottom of case has a crack that runs the length of the case and a label that has"Manufactured By The Collins-Patten Co. 15 Miller Place Boston Mass. Inside is covered with red material and is in pretty bad shape and some of the covering is coming loose. Contents are candle holders. Bottles(one with water in it) a beaker and a jar with silver strainer top with cross. Latch on case is also broken. This is the first one of these that I have seen. Picked it up at an estate sale. The bottom reads‘ Blessed Be Thy Holy Name’ Inside the box under this painted glass is a beautiful hand-painted chalkware sculpture of Mother Mary holding the dying Jesus figure against a paper background of a church alter. Statue is about 12" tall. Painted in soft pastels and fills most of the shadow box area. The lower box area contains a fold down alter platform/ compartment held with 2 chains and a latch. The latch is fully intact and functions as it should- on it is a picture of the Last Supper and when opened up it reveals a papered interior which originally would have held a crucifix. Holy water, and small dish for the Eucharist. Giving someone Viaticum was a very important moment in the life of a dying Catholic. Canada. So of course what you see is what you will get. Sold as is. It still stand by itself. 24’1/2 height or 2 feet It weight 1.52 kilo or 3.35 pounds On the front of the box behind the glass you see a nice print of the Last Supper. This is all original so of course the print is antique too. App. the frame of the box is 12’1/4 large by 8’3/4 height. With the purple carpet(or kind of) inside and maybe that need to be clean. There is a chain used for safety, in good condition ... moretoo. The door close well and the antique brass locker works well. On the top of the box you have 2 screws that fixed the candle holders, maybe in brass. On the back of the box(you will clearly see it’s really antique) you can see the 2 screws holding the crucifix. Maybe this box was fixed in the wall as an aumbry. I don’t have the chalice. About the crucifix it’s also made of wood. Back of the top you have a metal attach which 1 nail is missing. You can see some rust on it but it’s still very solid. I cannot say which material is made the holy Jesus, looks like wood but on the left eye you see some silver color so…maybe a metalic statue painted in gold color. 3 nails fixed the statue on the crucifix. The gold color crucified Jesus is 6’1/2 height by 5’ hand to hand) Crucifix is 24’ height x 10’ large. On the top of the cross you see the INRI( Iesvs Nazarenvs. Rex Ivdæorvm) fixed by 1 nail and maybe you can add another one because it’s not completely fixed. Antique Catholic Viaticum Communion Last Rites Altar Shrine Holy Family
This is an antique Catholic Last Rites Rector Viaticum(Latin for last provisions) from the early 1900s used for communion and anointing the sick and dying. Back in the day most people were treated for illness and died at home. Hospitals were not in widespread use and doctors and priests(Catholic and Anglican. And others) made house calls. It was fairly common for families to have such a"sick call shrine" to assist the priest in delivering the Sacrament to the sick and dying. The Holy Name Altar is one style of what is commonly called a Viaticum referring to the Bread of Life needed to make the journey to the afterlife. The Holy Name Altar was intended for ongoing devotions also and NOT just for times of illness or death. The box is made from solid oak with reverse hand-painted glass in beautiful shades of sky blue. Lavender, gold ... moreand red depicting two angels with a big cross on the top. The bottom reads"BLESSED BY THY HOLY NAME" Inside the box under this painted glass is a beautiful hand-painted chalkware sculpture of Jesus as a boy, Mary, and Joseph with the dove of peace over Jesus. Statue is about 12" tall, painted, and fills most of the shadow box area. The lower box area contains a fold down alter platform/ compartment held with a chain and a latch. The latch is fully intact and functions as it should- on it is a picture of the last supper. When opened up it reveals a cloth-lined interior which originally holds a crucifix. Linen and spoon. On the oak edge on each side are the hardware brackets for 2 candle holders; both candle holders are also included. Giving someone Viaticum was a very important moment in the life of a dying Catholic, as the person receiving the Viaticum(Eucharist) believed they were about to exit this world and embark on a journey to the afterlife and could only get there by receiving this last rite. Local parish priests would make house calls and bless the sick or administer the sacrament of Last Rites to the dying. This box has a bottom compartment that folds down and stays in place with a chain and it held Holy Water and Crucifix. This lowered shelf would them become an alter. I do not have the accessories, just the BOX ONLY. The box is oak. It measures approximately 23 x 43 x 4. Weight is just under 9 pounds. The top compartment holds a chalk ware PIETA(Michelangelo) statue. The statue is the mother, Mary, holding her crucified son, Jesus. The window itself has reverse painting on the glass. 100+ year old sacrament box for the Catholic"Viaticum" Last Rites and Anointing of the Sick. Oak box with original brass hardware. Box is approximately 23" long and 13" wide x 3 1/2" deep. Box has an opening lid and compartment. That shows The Last Supper picture insert and it has a chaulkware statue of the Virgin Mary and Jesus, behind painted glass. Included in the listing. Are a 5" diameter, plated Communion dish, a glass Holy Water bottle, and a wooden bead and metal crucifix rosary. No original swivel candle holders. The oak has some surface varnish loss and staining around the lid(see pictures) Backing is brittle and has some tearing. But this remains a solid, beautiful piece. Antique Viaticum, Last Rites or Annointing of the Sick Wooden Box, early 1900's
Magnificent antique Viaticum wall mounted priest sick call box. The top larger section has a wonderful chalk ware figure of Michelangelo's Pieta. The wood frame is solid oak with one worn spot under the Last Supper picture. The lower section has a drop down hinged door that is held closed with the original brass latch in fine condition. Overall it measures 13" wide. 23" tall and 3.75" deep. The statue inside the top is about 10" high. The original backing paper has become brittle at the edges, some of which is gone. I believe it is from the early 1900's. Truly remarkable.

Early 1900s Koenig Brothers Viaticum Shrine Blessed Mother holding Jesus Chalk Statue that was inside the Shrine. Measures 11" X 6 1/2" Had shrine but it fell and broke. Figure has minor stains(age. But colors are still great. Not broke or repaired. Great piece for restoration project. I will pack it well for shipment.

Vintage Viaticum/Altar Sick Call Set With holy water bottle, linen, plates
Antique Wooden Viaticum/Altar Set for Sick Calls includes 2 metal plates. Holy Water bottle, Pure Irish Linen, Holy medallion, informational booklet that shows an arrangement of the Sick Call Set and instructions to the spiritual service and other information. Items are in very good condition. One of the plates has been bent on one side and the holy water bottle cap is chipped on the side. Otherwise, everything is nice and clean. Dimensions: height 11 in. X width 6 in. X depth 1.5 in. The front of the viaticum/altar has a crucifix with Jesus. To open the altar slightly press the middle near the cross with your thumb and slide the cross up until you hear a click noise. To close. Slide the cross down after placing it in on the metal hook.
