This is a very nice set of antique drawers from a Japanese tongue to chest. No idea what happened to the cabinet I got this from an estate auction of ... morean antique store that closed. Has all the markings from the antique store and even a card inside of it, identify marks that were on the outside of the case dating it back to 1742. COLLECTOR ANTIQUE JAPANESE SMALL CHOBA TANSU,MERCHANT CHEST,MEIJI PERIOD c.1870
PLEASE READ THE SHIPPING INFORMATION PRIOR TO BIDDING/BUYING: THE SHIPPING AMOUNT THAT DISPLAYS IN SEARCH RESULTS AND AUTOMATED FORMS IS NOT APPLICABLE TO ALL DESTINATIONS. THANK YOU. Here is a stunning and very desirable approximately 150 year old antique Japanese small Choba tansu. Or merchant's chest, dating from the Meiji Era around the mid to late 1800's, featuring a lock bar in the center and classical safe compartment at the bottom right. It boasts a natural light colour with a rich honey patina, beautifully shaped hand forged iron hardware, wood peg construction and 8 drawers of various sizes that provide versatile storage options including a full width drawer at the top. It is in excellent overall condition for it's age. But has a little lock issue: as there is no key and the top drawer lock is in the closed position ... morewith the drawer open it will not shut all the way. The safe compartment has a tendency to swing open by itself since there is no key to lock it. The lock issue does NOT affect the lock bar which slides in and out of place properly. Please read the description and examine the photos for more details on the condition. Locksmiths and larger antique dealers will own sets of multiple keys to fit a broad range of locks so you should be able to get the drawer unlocked easily enough so it slides into place. With a little patience you could also find an antique key that fits right here on ebay(I can recommend a seller who regularly stocks this type of item) Other small issues worth noting are a small repair in the bottom corner of the smallest drawer just above the safe compartment. The larger top drawer is stiff to open and close due to age and needs a tweak, and one corner plate in the back is bent out of shape. Given it's age there is some wearing off of the blackening of a few small spots of the iron, and a couple of small nails are missing. There is a thin fissure on the top, and one wider one on the back as is common with wood this age, but the tansu is good and strong. There ar

Large, Exquisite Antique Japanese Tansu Chest/Cabinet, C.1890 - Superb
Large. Exquisite Antique Japanese Tansu Chest/Cabinet, C.1890- Superb Exquisite Japanese Antique Tansu Chest/Cabinet. C.1890- Superb This is an absolutely stunning piece of antique Meiji period Japanese furniture. Dating to around 1890; it is a Tansu cabinet, a popular piece of decoration in Japanese and Chinese homes. This example is a very decent size, at 15” wide, 13” high, and 8” deep. The front panels of this example use an exotically striped tiger wood. With painted and lacquered panel doors above; these open to reveal not just 6 drawers to the inside, but shibayama panelling on the inside of the doors as well– an unusual decorative touch. The metal-work is in copper. And all original, and there is further painted decoration to the top and sides. C ondition Very good. And it has recently been cleaned and re-lacquered; there is a small ... moreamount of age-related wear, and one piece of metal is missing on the top left back corner. The sides show evidence of wear and tear to the black lacquer(see photos) Delivery UK delivery costs £12. To the E.U. £25, U.S. Canada £51. And to Australia. N.Z. and Japan. £69; please ask for the international postage cost to other locations. International buyers– Please note: Import duties. Taxes, and charges are not included in the item price or shipping cost. These charges are the buyer's responsibility. Please check with your country's customs office to determine what these additional costs will be prior to bidding or buying. About me I have collected glass and ceramics. Antiques and antiquities for many years, and my shop philosophy is to sell very good antiques at very low prices very quickly so I do not need to carry much stock; larger shops will charge much more. But take much longer than I do to make a sale. Each to their own, then- but that makes my prices ultra-low compared to a bricks-and-mortar antiques shop. I try to describe everything I sell as honestly as possible. Including any damage, issues, or attributions to a maker, in my descriptions.

JAPANESE ANTIQUE 200 YEAR OLD 1 DRAWER LIDDED SUZURIBAKO CALLIGRAPHY TANSU
This is a very special Japanese one drawer suzuribako(portable calligraphy tansu) made entirely of Japanese kiri(paulownia) wood. This chest shows a high degree of Japanese craftsmanship in the construction. Joined with hardened hinoki wood pegs(see picture 11) This chest was rescued from a 500 year old family warehouse just outside Kyoto and dates to the early 1800's(mid Edo Era) The hand forged iron metal on this chest also date it to the Edo era as all hinges. Corner work and latches are all made of forged iron with a protective coat of burnt lacquer. The drawer pull as well as top handle are also made of hand forged iron. The handles are made in a kakute(square) style which was the most difficult to make as it was necessary to cold chisle it out of a thick bar of forged iron. This chest was used to hold calligraphy and writing materials ... moreas well as money and valuables. The lidded top once held brushes and an ink stone(suzuri) The top interior area as well as the interior of the drawer were finished in black lacquer to help protect them from ink spills. This 200 year old suzuribako has been well used yet well loved and aside from a few areas of iron deterioration and minor wood restoration(see bottom- picture 10 as well as picture 9) it remains in very fine original condition with a patina that only 2 centuries of appreciation could give it. The top carrying handle is still secure and provides a convenient way to transport this chest. The lided top opens with the push of the side buttom(see picture 7) and snaps the top securly in place when the lid is lowered. The drawer lock has been neutralized but its latch will still slide up and down with the push of the lock button(see picture 8) to hold the drawer firmly shut. This Suzuribako chest measures 6" wide by 7" high by 10" deep(15 x 17.5 x 25 cm) A very warm accent for your home or office. Great to hold pens and paper as well as remote controls for the tv and stereo. Please enjoy the enlarged pictures to get a full appreciation of the fine hi

Antique Japanese Small Personal Storage Calligraphy Tansu Jewelery Box
This is a Japanese small storage/calligraphy box. It is made of lightly lacquered cedar that is jointed together and connected with bamboo pegs(we have a close up photo of these pegs in the side of one of the drawers. See the last photo) This was made to store papers and contain a calligraphy set on the top. This was most likely used for business. When we got it at an antique auction in Japan it still had some papers in it from the late 1800's. The Meiji era. That doesn't mean it was made then. Just when it was last used. The top comes off. Under it is where the calligraphy set would be. This tray also lifts out and there is a small space under where blank papers would be stored. The drawers are in good condition the handles are made of copper. Vintage Japanese Mizuya Kitchen Tansu Sliding Doors # 1 of 2 sets
This is one of two sets of sliding doors originally made for a Japanese kitchen tansu(mizuya) from the early 1900's. They are made of cypress and are jointed together at the corners. With a soft tap of a hammer they can be separated. Then a thin board or glasss could be inserted into the groove around the inside edges. We tried to show these edges in the photos# 6- 9. One of the inside edges is broken but it could be fixed with glue before or after the insert is installed. This broken section can be seen in photo# 5. Left side door look at the upright on the right side and the crack is visible. The bottom of the runner has an ebony inlay. This is for its beauty and the utilitarian purpose of making the wood stronger so the bottom runner doesn't wear down through sliding back and forth. They are 19 7/8 inches wide x 18 3/4 inches high(51 ... morex 48 cm) We have other antique/vintage Japanese items on our ebay site. We will combine items for shipping if we can safely do so. Vintage Japanese Kiri Tansu Doors & Hardware
These are a pair of doors made for an early 1900's Japanese tansu. They are all kiri wood with copper latches/ handles that cover a key hole. We don't have the key. The right side door has the key hole the left side has a fake key hole. These don't need to be locked to stay closed. There is a spring latch on the left side door that fits into a hole on the right side door. This can be seen in photos 7. 8 11& 12. Also the left side door has a bottom and top lock that locks it into the tansu. This can be seen in photos 9, 10& 12 in the upper corners. This latch slides up and down into a hole in the tansu itself. The left door is closed first then the upper and lower latches are locked into place, locking that door in place. Then the right side door would be closed and the center spring latch would keep it shut until it is ... morepulled open. The kiri wood is in pretty good shape. Considering it's about 90 years old. There are some spaces in the center panels from when the wood shrank over the years. There is also some expected wear on the edges and on the wood itself. Look closely at the photos please. The corners latches move up and down and the center spring latch still has spring in its spring. They are 17 inches high and the total width when they are together is 34 3/4 inches wide(88 cm) They weigh almost 4 1/2 pounds(2.2 kilo) We have other antique/vintage Japanese items on our ebay site. Or a Tsukue-dansu(writing desk) this tansu chest was made and used about 110 years ago in the late Meiji period(c. 1900) This style chest was intended to sit on the tatami floor and act as a writing desk being the perfect height for the person sitting on the floor to easily and comfortably put pen to paper. It has a nice configuration of 8 drawers as well as two sliding doors. The various drawers were of a size that could hold everything from large pieces of writing paper and accounts as well as smaller drawers used to store brushes. Inks, and valuables. Recessed side handles on both sides made this chest easily portable(see picture 5) In addition there is a very special"hidden" drawer on the underside of one of the middle drawers(see picture 10) This drawer could only be accessed by removing the drawer and ... moreturning it upside down and sliding out a hidden panel(see picture 10) This is where the accountant(or owner) would store his cash or valuables. The Meiji era coins seen in the hidden compartment will be included with this tansu. All original(including patina and finish) This tansu chest is made of solid keyaki(zelkova) wood with sugi(cryptomeria) wood interiors and hardened hinoki wood peg construction(see picture 11) All the hardware is made of hand forged copper with handles in the classic mokko(melon) shape. All eight drawers as well as the panel on the hidden section and the two doors move easily without binding. With the exception of a few minor ink stains on the top and front. see enlarged pictures) and a 100+ year old warm aged patina this chest remains in very fine condition and should serve one well for another century of use. It measures 23" wide by 12" high by 11 3/4" deep(58 x 30 x 29 cm) A great piece of Japanese history and a very interesting and functional piece of furniture. You'll love it. Vintage Japanese Style Tansu Wooden Calligraphy Drawing Box and Tools
For your bidding consideration: You are viewing a beautiful Japanese Style Wooden Tansu Calligraphy Drawing Box with Brass Fittings& Drawing Instruments. This box is made from a hardwood. Which appears to me to be cherry wood from its deep reddish tone, but I can not say with certainty. The box is fitted out with handsome brass hardware. Overall, the condition is very good for a vintage piece, but does show numerous scratches in its wood surface. These are not deep and should be able to be buffed out and polished, if desired. The brass fittings are dull from age and handling, but also could be brightened with a polishing. Otherwise, a beautiful box in excellent vintage condition. There are various tools included with the box, but having no knowledge or expertise about these instruments, I can't verify if they are still in really usable ... moreshape for their intended purpose, or not. On the bottom of the box, there is a sticker with the name of a previous owner. The box contains a top section that opens to reveal these various calligraphy drawing tools and instruments. With retainer bands to hold them in place. There is additional storage in two slender drawers underneath the top compartment. One of the two is lined with a plate of clear glass. This may have been original or added later. There are handsome brass corner shields on each corner of the box. As well as small round knobs for the drawers and a smoothly working brass swinging clasp on the main compartment, for security. On the top, there is a large brass handle, and hinges at the back. This is a gorgeous looking box for the calligrapher or artist. But also would serve very functionally for modern use holding pens, jewelry or other small possessions. It makes a grand decorative piece for the collector of ornamental boxes. The measurements are 10" by 6" by 5 1/2" tall. Thanks for looking! Tall Beautiful Antique Japanese Haribako Tansu Sewing Box w/ 2 Small Drawers
Antique Japanese Haribako Box- I came upon this box many years ago at an estate sale and was told it is an antique Japanese Sewing'Haribako' Box. This is all I know about this piece other than for the fact it is really a lovely object. I am not certain what the two holes are for. Reaching in to the one at the front of the piece I can feel the bottom of one of the two small drawers. The hole/opening at the top. In front of the two drawers, is roughly 1.5" Deep and there is another tiny hole at the base of that hole. Perhaps for a long needle or two to fit into? Or, perhaps there was some sort of pin cushion there at one time? If you happen to know, please fill me in! The two small drawers each come fully out and one measures just over 3.5"L x just under 1.5"W. The slightly smaller drawer measures 3.5"L x 1.5"W. ... moreThe whole piece is beautifully handmade and the woodgrain is distinct and very lovely. A curious and wonderful object! Stunning Large Antique Japanese Tansu Cabinet, with Stand, C.1900
Stunning Large Antique Japanese Tansu Cabinet. With Stand, C.1900 Stunning Large Japanese Antique Tansu Cabinet. C.1900 This is a fabulous piece of antique Meiji period Japanese furniture– it is a good-sized Tansu cabinet. Dating to around 1900, painted and lacquered in black with a delicate and beautiful design of gilded birds and trees with a landscape to the lower part; the decoration continues to the sides and shelves at the top. While the drawers fronts and cupboard doors inside have a gilded cranes and tree design picked out with blue and red paint- this is particularly stunning as it is such excellent condition. The ornate metal fixtures appear to be original. And are all present, and the piece retains it's original stand(although I have sold quite a few Tansus, this is the first I have seen with the stand still in place) The shelves ... moreat the top are also a rare and unusual feature, and at 26" 66cm) tall and 15" 38cm) wide and 8" 20cm) deep it is substantially bigger than any painted and lacquered tansu I have sold; it is exquisite, and you are unlikely to find a similar one for sale. C ondition Excellent; there is slight wear to the exterior lacquer. On some edges, and an area of old repair to the right hand side(see photos) There is a key to the door lock, but I don't think it is original, as it is very temperamental and doesn't stay in the door on it's own. There is also a missing area of lacquer inside the large drawer. The stand has a few small cracks in the wood. And there is some surface corrosion to the metal. It is a highly decorative example of the type, and in a very good size. Delivery UK delivery is free. To the E.U. costs £31, U.S. Canada £61. And to Australia. N.Z. and Japan. £89; please ask for the international postage cost to other locations. This will be shipped with the stand and shelving(which is fully detachable) seperately and securely wrapped to prevent damage, so will need a minute or two to re-assemble when unwrapped.
