A fine late 19th century brass mounted cowrie shell pocket snuff box. The hinged lid is engraved: Samuel Wyles Burton& dated 1878. Condition is excellent with wonderfull patina to the shell& a good strong hinge. There is a small hairline on the shell end which i have pictured, it has never been repaired or apart& i think the hairline has been there a long time, it certainly does not affect the function at all& requires no attention. Superb& quite rare antique snuff box that has clearly been very well cared for over the years. Size: 2 1/8 inches(5.4cm) by 1 3/8 inches(4.4cm) by 1 1/4 inches(3.2cm) high. Here we have. A rare George II Irish solid silver cowrie shell snuff box. With contemporary engraving to lid with the initials CM. Piano hinge. Bears the makers mark B.S below a fleur de lys for Benjamin Stokes who is recorded working in Dublin, circa 1750. No other hallmarks. Opens and closes with no play. One historic crack to the shell, very stable, and a small 1cm split to the edge of the silver lid, otherwise very good condition for age. DIMENSIONS- 75mm x 60mm. The base consists of a Stainless Steel container with 5 pieces of Cowry shell attached to form a pentagon. Excellent craftsmanship. Have no idea of age, manufacturer, or origin. The Shell in the light is gorgeous( see photos) Would make a lovely addition to dresser top for storing that special ring, or just a beautiful conversation piece trying to determine its origin. This stunning Georgian gentleman's Chinese Export Silver Cowrie shell snuff box measures 80mm(3.25' long x 64mm(2.5' across x 36mm(1.5' high and weighs 66 grams. It is marked inside the hinged lid with pseudo English Georgian hallmarks for the very well regarded Canton maker Lin Chong who was active between 1810- 1830. The silver work is as it should be for this period with a shaped thumb piece and the contemporary initials BB engraved to the centre and even a false opening button. The shell has a fantastic colour to it and has an old faint hairline visible inside highlighted in photo 11 and the silver has signs of use and no repairs or restoration. a superb fine old George 111 Cowrie shell silver mounted Agate set snuff box. The snuff box is approx 1790s and is 5.6 cms long x 3.3 cms wide x 3.2 cms deep. The agate in fine condition as is the shell, the silver top has no hallmarks i can see[there may be one below the snuff residue on the inner face but it was common not to hallmark Scottish silver then. the top has a slight rattle and it is evident that one end has been repaired in the past.
