Nice. Heavy duty, antique brown glass bottle sealed with broken off cork. Still has a couple tablespoons or so of liquid contents inside. Not for human consumption! Unknown contents. Original aged label intact, except for a few litlle dings, as seen in pics. Original ingredients for this compound elixir, are listed as Saw Palmetto Berries, Sandalwood, Corn Silk, and alcohol. This leads me to believe it would have been used for genital and/or urinary tract conditions. Saw palmetto has long been known for it's use for enlarged prostrate glands in men. The other herbal ingredients also have uri-gental indications in old pharmaceutical references. Well known Sharp& Dohme brand, with the label showing Baltimore- Philadelphia. Perhaps this is a clue to the age of this bottle? Very late 1800's to early 1900's is my best estimate. ... moreThis bottle is in excellent shape. No chips or cracks. The cork is firmly in place. Nice mold blown tooled lip aqua drug bottle from the late 1800s measuring 4 3/8" tall. Bottle embossed in two lines in the front Dr. Mc Munn's/ Elixir Of Opium with no embossing on the base.Bottle is in about perfect with a very thin strip of inner haze but no chips cracks dings or stains and some nice bubbles. It does have all the imperfections that come with and old collectible bottle inconsistent mold lines. Air bubbles, striations in glass and a uneven poured bottom. Still has the original cork with some wax on top and you can still see a small part of the seal that went across the top. Embossed on the sides of the hand blown bottle are Dr. McMunn's and Elixir of Opium. The bottle is 4 1/2 inches tall. Dr. McMunn’s Elixir of Opium was first formulated in the mid 1830s by Dr. John B. McMunn. The product became a big hit in the United States once the A. B. D. Sands drug company bought the recipe in 1841. Soon after.
