Antique 1890's Bookshelf From The First Carnegie Library. Few Made
These were specifically designed and produced for the Duluth Minnesota Carnegie Library. One of the first Andrew Carnegie built. Back when it was speculated Duluth would become the largest city in North America. The library had glass floors and a copper dome and fabulous huge Tiffany windows and rows of these shelves designed just for this library. The library was discontinued in use and a few of these shelves survive. Carnegie designed them himself. They are gorgeous. Wrought iron side pieces and original wood shelf. Fabulous. This is for a single shelf and two side brackets. 7.5" x 7.5" brackets and a 3' shelf. I have used them to set up a library of shelves. Wall hung. Very ornate cast iron sides. I have multiple sets.

The lock does not work and the key is a handle only. The right door has an original brass rim. The finish is in very fine condition on mahogany with just enough mars and dings for antique character. Drawers have hand cut dovetail joints and the ring pulls appear original. The back of this historic furniture shows hand planing marks. For easier moving. The upper section is removable. Fabulous triple width Sheraton revival Gothic Revival mahogany bookcase display cabinet of breakfront form with three astragal glazed doors and adjusting shelves. Standing on tapering spade feet. Fine quality piece. Measures 72 inches wide x 54 inches high x 16 inches deep. The gothic revival begins in earnest in 1837 with the publication in London of Pugin's Contrasts. But this gothic revival bookcase with glazed doors must date towards the 4th quarter of the 19th century. It seems well constructed and an attractive piece of furniture that would prove useful and harmonic in almost any home decor. This bookcase has wear commensurate with its age. Description: Here is a MARVELOUS example of a Victorian Era Bamboo Book Case. It has the tortoise shell decoration to the bamboo parts as well as some pyrography leopard spots remaining on the shelves. There is also a pair of sharpened dowels running up each side and nice turned ball finials. It is about 36" tall to the knobs on the rear legs. the top shelf sits about 29" above the floor.it is about 20" wide and 11" deep. it is complete and the shelves are all solid at the corners. the two top shelves are 100% the bottom shelf had a small split near one corner but that was repaired a long time ago from the looks of it and the board is feels as solid as the other two. The is an age crack or two here and there but none seem to be in a critical area. The bottom right rail of the little decorative gallery at the rear of the ... moretop shelf has a tiny amount of wiggle room but remains solid as are the rest of the gallery pieces. I also added two more pictures of the feet of the shelf which shows that each leg ends in a solid and complete bamboo"ring" node. Those of you familiar with these shelves will know how rare that is on a piece of this age. The color and patina are FIRST RATE as you can see in my pictures. But legible oval paper label that reads"Paine Furniture Company" The Paine Furniture Company wasw founded in Boston in 1835! They were a manufacturer. For your consideration is a French late Restauration gilt bronze mounted mahogany bookcase in good antique condition(1800's) h. 76" x w. 38 1/2" x d. 18" The interior is painted blue. And the back of cabinet is lined with worn striped fabric, possibly silk, of unknown origin and date. There is an approximate 1" hole routed in back of cabinet. Hardware is original: one rosette missing from top right cabinet door. Glass is intact. The mahogany is unrestored and in beautiful condition. The doors close, but not tightly as the key is missing and doors do not lock. This bookcase is purchased and authenticated from Bonhams auction house in Los Angeles. This is a beautiful real wood antique Indian bookshelf. We bought these a few years ago when we lived overseas. We transported them here and now are not using them except just to look beautiful in our kitchen and living room. We have 2 of them. Then design is that of 19th century India or older- that of the rich Maharajah dynasty leftovers. I think they are modern day replicas but in theory they could be originals I guess.
