TALL 1890S SOLID & BURLED WALNUT BOOKCASE CABINET WARDROBE CARVED GLASS DOORS
Here is a fine very late 19th century mostly solid walnut and very tall at 8 and 1/2 feet bookcase. I love the simple architectural features of the carved arches over each glass door which combines the look of solid walnut and It would be fantastic in a library setting or even as a display cabinet as working locksets are being replaced as I write this so both doors will easily lock. It is perfect for the room a the top of a narrow stairwell as it dismantles and sets up very easily. The base with the two drawers is the first level to set up. This base section retains the original porcelain castors. Each of the side panels is screwed to a rear panel. It is easiest to handle these steps like this. Add one side and then the other. Stunning, Pristine European Oak Bookcase, Late 19th/Early 20th Century, 6x7 ft
This bookcase belonged to my great grandfather who lived in Alsace and Germany around the turn of the century. It was brought over to the states in the 1940's by my aunt and uncle. The piece was just appraised. It was made somewhere between 1890-1920. Fair market value has been established at $3720. Though the actual value is between $5200 and $6500(see below) Here is more detail from the appraisal: The bookcase has 3 glass doors. There are rectangular wood inserts; the cornice overhangs and is triple molded and flat. The bookcase is a dark stained oak; the sides of the bookcase are paneled; the front sides of the bookcase have fluted Corinthian columns with 2 large relief scrolls. Above the doors are large relief scrolls which extend the width of the bookcase. The apron appears to be straight and the bottom is a flat molded bottom as ... moreopposed to feet and legs. The bookcase is classified as a"Continental" European bookcase. The wood inserts are astragal(wood or lead) and is a method of securing the glass. It is difficult to tell from the photos if the wood inserts have panes of glass or the inserts are"placed" on the glass. The bookcase is of an English style and would date C. 1890-1920. English furniture has both Germanic and Celtic strains. The bookcase is a larger reproduction of a mid-18th century English piece. The value for the triple bookcase would be between $5200.00 and $6500.00 in today's retail market. The market comparison approach to value was used which estimates value by comparison with properties sold in the relevant market. With adjustments made for all differences that affect value, such as differences in characteristics of value, in market layer, and in time. This is a very nice revolving tabletop shelf. It could be for small books or nic nacs. It is 15 1/2" tall by 12" wide. The cubby holes are 6 1/2"x6" In comes in two parts. The top shelves(photos 1 to 10) that swivel on the base(photo 11 and 12) I took different shades of the top piece to show how it was constructed and that there are two seperations between boards, but book case is very sturday, not loose. Dating back to the 1800’s it has a large bookcase topper with large glass front doors. The glass appears to be very old with some small imperfections in it. There are 3 adjustable shelves in the bookcase. The drop front desk, doors and drawers of the base all have burled mahogany accents. Behind the drop front are lots of cubbies and 4 dovetail drawers with porcelain ... morepulls for storage and organization. There are ink stains on the interior part of the desk from years of use. This adds so much character to this piece. The base of the desk has 1 large drawer with drop pulls and 2 doors that open for storage. The sides of the base are paneled and this piece is very solid and sturdy. The unit sits on casters. I do not know the maker or exact date it was made. This piece is antique and will not be perfect. This fine example has a moulded edge top edge over a single glazed door enclosing shelves and flanked by ormolu mounts and string inlay and is raised on a plinth style base. Victorian Carved Solid Cherry Bookcase ca. 1860
This ca.1860 solid cherry carved bookcase was custom built for Daniel A. Kenney in Boston. MA. Mr. Kenney worked on the ironclad ship, the"USS Monitor" The"Battle of Hampton Roads" between the USS Monitor and the CSS Virginia, was the first engagement between ironclad vessels during the war for Southern Independence. There is a descriptive historical plaque of ownership inside on the right. The bookcase measures 65" tall with gallery, 19" deep by 51" wide. Notice the Jenny Lind dovetailing on the drawers. The arched glass in the doors is beveled. The intricate carving is flawless. The right door squeaks when opened. There are 2 one inch long discolortions and a third one that is 1/4" long on the right side without indentations. They just appear as thin dark lines. Hand crafted in France of solid oak. The detailed fruit, vines and Renaissance motifs are sophisticated. The top of the base has been revarnished for durability. The rest of the finish is original and very well preserved. Waxed and buffed, only an occasional wipe with a soft dry cloth is needed to maintain the warm antique patina.
