Vintage Fire Alarm Signal Brass Bell Great Lakes Ship E.M. Ford Alpena, Mi
This is the sound producing bell and mounting bolt only as pictured. Markings indicate that bell is from a Great Lakes freighter that was launched on May 25. 1898 at the Cleveland Shipbuilding yard to haul coal and ore and was named the Presque Isle. Purchased by the Huron Portland Cement Co. of Alpena, Michigan in 1956 to haul cement to ports on the lakes and was renamed E. M. Ford in honor of company chairman Emory Moran Ford. Underwent several repairs and refittings over the years with the last being in 1980. Was sold for scrap in 2008. I do not know when this bell was manufactured and installed. Many thanks to Brian Ferguson's"boatnerd" website from which this information was found and at which much more is available. I was informed by a sailor who worked on the E.M. Ford that these bells were mounted throughout the ship ... moreto signal the crew to fires etc. Made of brass that is about 3mm thick. Measures 8 inches in diameter and is 1 3/4 inches deep. Weight is about three pounds. Mounting bolt is brass and is 1/2 x 2 3/4 inches. May need cleaning and polishing. Please view photos carefully. No international shipping.
