This most unusual European walnut. And hardwood(pine secondary wood) miniature wardrobe with ebonized wood panels dates ca. 1860-1880 and measures only 23 ½” tall x 17” wide x 7 5/8” deep. It features a faded and worn original French Polish surface with some irregular coloration but a nice sheen. All of the wood with the exception of the inside shelves(added early 1900s) appears to be original and there is only the scantest trace of old(inactive) insect damage to the bottom. The tiny, turned bun feet are sturdy and without damage and the locks and latches are right as rain. You will note a very small corner loss in the veneer on the top back corner as per the pictures. This imposing Louis Philippe Armoire is crafted in solid oak. The Armoire comes completely flat and can be assembled in about 20 minutes. The armoire stands on ogee scroll feet and a cut out plinth. To the inside there are 3 shelves. One with a full width drawer and one having 3 drawers below it. The middle drawer has a lock but no key so I can put a button knob on this one if required. All this is enclosed with a pair of panel doors complete with decorative carving and molding. The left hand door is held shut with a simple sprung catch. While the right hand door closes on to it and is held shut with original working lock and key. Antique 19th century French Armoire from the Charente - Walnut - to restore - NR
This auction is for a 19th century French armoire for restoration. The armoire is made of what I believe to be walnut. I purchased this at an antique shop near Cognac in the Charente department of France about 10 years ago and had it shipped to the US as part of a load of inventory for an antique shop(since closed) that was located in Connecticut. It was a project piece that I intended to restore and then sell. Unfortunately. I never had the time to tackle this so I am putting this up for sale to someone who has the time and skill to restore this to its former glory(we used to sell these in restored condition anywhere between $6K& $12k) The photos tell do the best job of describing the condition- to summarize, there is no back(it was a piece of plywood when purchased and removed pending restoration) the crown and top(as well as the bottom) ... moreare missing and will need to be rebuilt, there is no lock on the doors and door on the right has has a slight warp to it(that someone has corrected by putting a piece of wood into the opening to make it close completely) the spanner beneath the doors was replaced at sometime with what appears to be matching wood but not carved to match the rest of the case, the left side is complete but has come out of mortise on the front column and will need to be reattached, finally, the right side bottom spanner is missing the bottom of the curved carved piece(see a photo of the left side bottom to get an idea of what is missing) If you have done this type of restoration project before then you know what is involved and how nice this will be when complete- it's a great project for someone with some skill and patience. Height from top to bottom is 84" Depth from front to back is 21.25" width is about 52" The doors are 48" wide by 71" high. The escutcheons measure 19" high by 1.75" wide. Due to the size. Here is a fabulous early 19th century French wardrobe with original hinges and lovely carving across the top above the doors including raised carved applique date of 1835. Imported to Charleston from France by it's current owner after he purchased it at a high end antiques store in Normandy. The finish particularly on the front doors is nice with lovely wood grains and the original long metal hinges holding the doors in place. It stands 78 inches tall and measures 60 inches wide and 28 inches deep front to back at the widest points on it's bonnet. The outside of the closet itself measures closer to 54 inches wide and 26 inches from the front of the doors back to the wall. Three Door English Arts & Crafts Armoire c. 1911
MAKE ME AN OFFER! This is a rare example of English Arts& Crafts utilizing the classic Linen Scroll design which was used liberally in classic English architecture and design. Here. It embellishes a triple-wide armoire that was made in England for an estate in Belgium. We bought this piece through an antique dealer in Vancouver, BC who told us the history, and who had purchased the item in Belgium. He told us the piece was made around 1911 or so. We had this piece in the master bedroom of our Spanish Colonial home and it worked very well, but now we have downsized and it's time to let it go. The armoire is solid oak. With hand-hammered and hand-forged hardware. I do not have the skeleton keys for the locks. The main compartment features a shelf along the top and brass clothes rod for hanging clothes and functions extremely well as ... morean extra closet. The left compartment features adjustable shelves and has two drawers at the bottom(see pictures) There are two issues I need to disclose. Neither of which detract from the beauty or presentation of this piece. The left-most door is slightly warped(we puchased it this way) probably from being in Vancouver which is very damp, and so a small portion of the top of the door does not close flush with the rest of the armoire by about 3/8 inch. Also, the top-left most panel of the same door has experienced some shrinkage, hardly noticeable. Other than that. The piece is in excellent condition for being over 100 years old. We suggest blanket-wrapped shipping, but please note that like all antique armoires, it disassembles to move through hard-to-navigate areas within one's home, so there should be no worries about moving a piece this big after purchasing. I am listing this item for a friend. It has some great Kalamazoo. Michigan History behind it. It was made by a local cabinet maker from the vintage hardwood doors from the long closed Nazareth College. As you can see by the photos, it is in beautiful condition. It is equipped with an interior light that turns on when the door is opened. It was most recently used as an entertainment center but was not altered in any way so it could still be used as an Armoire. It is very large measuring50 inches wide(55 at the crown) 86 1/2 inches tall and 24 inches deep. Because it is made of hardwood doors, it is very heavy and will not be shipped. This is a scarce form of furniture and was most likely made with the hotel/boarding house market in mind. The top molding is an'egg& dart' variant. The applied carving is a'linen fold' variant in radial form. The right side is with a drop-front desk and cubbyholes. The middle rail is'beaded' and the'carving' on the drop-front is'scrolled vine' The Chifferobe has beveled and shaped mirrors with flanking turned baluster, ogee base rail, and is made of mahogany or mahoganized hardwood. It has darkened with age but has its original finish. c. 1890 Chifferobe. A wardrobe with mirrored front and drop-front desk combination. 54x76x13.

Here is an absolutely gorgeous quartersawn oak carved wardrobe with finials. Much like the style of Eastlake, purchased through the estate auction of an old Charleston family member, so I'm not sure if it is American made or perhaps English. It is certainly late 19th century to early 20th century solid oak(primary and secondary) with lovely carvings and dentition across the top, a large clear beveled dressing mirror, dovetailed drawers, original old hardware and an incredible amount of storage space within a solid wood cabinet that's made to travel in separate smaller components(base, closet, bonnet) so it could be easily maneuvered through the traditionally smaller hallways and stairwells of those now antique homes. This wonderful large functional wardrobe stands 87 inches tall by 53 inches wide by 21 inches front to back. Offering ... morean amazing amount of storage in a gorgeous quartersawn oak cabinet. This terrific Victorian wardrobe has 3 large sliding shelves and 3 nice deep drawers on one side with open closet space on the opposing side, still equipped with cloak hooks affixed to the walls as well as a hanging rod across it's width, added later. If the new owner desired, the open cabinet space for hanging clothes can of course be easily converted into any type storage you may need with the variety of storage system unit options available in most retail stores. Below both sides of the closet is a large deep drawer that runs the width of the base. LOUIS XV - STYLE FRENCH ARMOIRE - 1890-1910 Found by J Peterman
I wonder what wonderful tales it could tell us if only. Where its life began. We cannot say for certain, however, this armoire was said to have come from France before finding it's way to the U.S. and being drafted into service by the legendary retailer, Peterman, as a display cabinet. When we first saw it, it had rather indecorously been filled with piles of Peterman clothing in the midst of a shopping frenzy when they closed their stores years ago. We rescued it and brought it home to become a part of our eclectic collection of furnishings. It has taken a few re-locations in its stead since, but, alas, we're streamlining and must pass it one to someone else who will add new pages to it's story. We"placed" its twin a couple of months ago and the owner was so delighted that she sent us pictures of it in its new home! ... moreIts crown bears the wonderful carving that is the hallmark of the Louis XV design. As do the drawer front and front legs. It appears to be crafted of walnut and shines beautifully with a little polish. It has no key however the lock mechanism is intact and functional. While it does evidence the wear and tear of age, as do all of us that have experienced life to the fullest, it is still a lovely addition to any room and still quite capable of doing it's job of holding other treasures. It has mountings for a shelves(the latter not included as it wasn't when we bought it. There are some areas of wear on the mirrors(see photo) but these neither detract nor interfere with the mirrors' function, in fact, depending upon one's age, this can be an advantage. The top is completely closed and serves as a great place for display things. hats, florals, etc. Previous owner added supports to crown that are not visible unless you are looking down on the piece from above. I do believe that it is original. Measurements are 96" Tall 50" wide 19 inches deep. There is a drawer at the bottom and three shelves. It is sturdy. I see no structural defects. There is some fading and the normal wear you would expect from a piece this old. The mirror glass is the original My beloved Great Aunt Ruth passed at 102. Aunt Ruth lived each year to the fullest! It is my job to sort through her estate.this woman who loved to travel. Shop& start projects of all nature. Oyster shell veneering was used in Europe for over two hundred years. It had originated in Holland in the late 17th century. A Victorian Carved Satinwood Single Door Wardrobe Raised on Drawer Base A Victorian Carved Satinwood Single Door Wardrobe Raised on Drawer Base A lovely Victorian carved satinwood single door mirror fronted wardrobe raised over a large storage drawer base. The wardrobe is formed with a central door with full-length bevel edged dressing mirror in it. Either side of the mirrored door there is a section of carving and incised decoration. The carving is various swirls and there is incised lines down to the base. Opening the wardrobe it is fitted with cloths hooks and rails. The sides of the wardrobe are panelled. The base of the wardrobe is footed with one full-length storage drawer and the it is raised on bracket feet. The wardrobe has its original fittings. Handles lock etc(no key) The wardrobe dates to around 1880-1890. There is a small top ... moresection that lifts on and off, it also lifts off the base for ease of moving. Sizes Height 79” Width 48.75” Depth 21” Condition The condition of the wardrobe is excellent with it only having light scuffs and marks but commensurate to age.
