Antique French Armoire Louis XV Normandy Walnut Wardrobe Unusual Eye Motif
This is a beautiful Louis XV Walnut French armoire. It stands tall and proud and is an impressive piece with rich texture to the wood finish. The motif looks like an eye at the top and an eye on the bottom- quite unusual! The armoire is 24" deep. 54" 4'5" wide, 91" 7'7" tall. We are unsure of the weight but estimate at around 175lbs. It's been very well cared for in a smoke free home. There are minor marks here and there and it looks like the back right leg was repaired a long time ago. Missing the key. However it stays closed and opens easily without it. It's a hefty piece but not too difficult to move. The shelving and drawer all come out, as does the crown off the top. Classic Vintage Antique "Chifferobe" Wardrobe Armoire Early 20th Century
This is an early 1900's antique"chifferobe" or"chifforobe" or"chiffarobe" I.e. wardrobe with 5 drawers and a small mirrored door on one side, and a full size wardrobe door on the other side. Behind the full size door is a place for hanging garments with an iron hanging rod. A couple of the drawers need some work but everything else functions normally. Beautiful wood grain with wear and tear that would be expected for age of furniture. Has been in continual use for 75 to 95 years! The inside of the chifferobe is somewhat more rustic than the exterior. One drawer bottom is quite interesting(see photo# 6)I don't know if this wooden crating material was a replacement or if it originally came that way. Either way. It's been like that for as long as I can remember, and I'm 57 years old. Truly. This ... moreitem would make a great display piece for an antique clothing boutique or for great storage for at home! This chifferobe very likely dates from the very beginning of their marriage. If not. They certainly acquired it sometime soon thereafter. It was a fixture in their home for decades. And my widowed grandmother continued to use it throughout her adult life up until her death in the early 1990s. So this is truly an original vintage item with quite a bit of age on it. Antique CHIFFEROBE. ARMOIRE, CLOSET.c1907.5 drawers with original glass pulls.very clean except the last drawer needs some additional cleaning. Top drawer has WORKING lock. Smaller'hatbox' compartment has original beveled mirror in the door. Larger door on wardrobe side locks and also has the original beveled mirror. I had to reset the mirror as it had wiggled down and once inside found the label from the glass company in Tennessee dated August 1907(didn't think of it at the time. But I should have taken a photo of the tag) Inside this long side, is the original metal rod for your hanging clothes. It is original, sturdy, and strong. This chifferobe stands 64 inches tall outside. The original finish on fruitwood is very well preserved, it has been waxed and buffed so all that is needed to maintain its warm patina is an occasional wipe with a soft dry cloth. There are warps. Mars and shrinkage separations from age for character. Mirrors have a little antique"smoke" to show their age. Hardware is original, there are no keys, modern magnetic catches secure the doors. This lovely extra large antique mahogany armoire or wardrobe with gorgeous wood grains and veneers. Manufactured during the early 1900's in England or Scotland was recently imported from the UK through Edinburgh Scotland. It offers beautiful organized storage for even the largest wardrobe. This early twentieth century wardrobe offers a large double hanging closet with a hanging bar with multiple sliding cloak hooks on the bar as well as cloak hooks around the inside of the closet. This open closet space of course could easily be fitted with any of the the modular storage systems available in most major department stores if that better served the needs of the new owner. The opposing single closet is fitted with three removable shelves which makes four large functional cubbies. The decorative doors on this wardrobe include beautiful veneer ... morepanels on the two outside closet doors and a large arch top beveled mirror on the center closet door. The design of the piece includes decorative metal hardware as shown and it appears to be both original and intact. This wardrobe does have a currently working lock and a key. Though I never guarentee old locks. The real highlight is the gorgeous wood used to create this piece and craftmanship that went into making it into such functional storage space. This is a high quality piece with dovetailed drawers and sturdy construction. I've included a number of photographs in an attempt to accurately represent the construction, design, condition and beauty of the piece, though pictures just don't do it justice. I notice the bonnet was not quite seated on top when I shot these photo's but it does fit tightly and helps hold the wardrobe together as per design. This wardrobe is designed to travel easily in four pieces- the bonnet, a single closet and the double closet and the dresser base with five drawers. This wardrobe has been in our family since my great great grandfather won it as a prize in a pigeon-homing contest in Herentals. Belgium when he was 20 years old. Antique Wardrobe / Armoire, Solid Mahogany, Possible Entertainment Center
This is a great old heavy solid mahogany wardrobe which I believe is early 1900's. It has been in my family for at least 60 years. The outside was refinished with a blond antiqued finish many years ago and is still in fair to good condition. It is very solid without any loose joints. The inside is all solid mahogany drawers which appear to have their original varnished finish. The drawers are in excellent condition for their age and do not need any refinishing. A few of the dovetail joints are slightly loose but really do not need any attention. There are seven huge open-front drawers which glide in and out easily. It's been in dry storage for the last 20 years. The caning on the doors was done at the same time as the refinishing and is in excellent condition. At one time there were apparently fabric panels in the doors. The hardware ... moreis still there if you want to stretch fabric behind the caning. The doors come with the original brass key and working lock. In my opinion. This wardrobe can be used as is without major refinishing. Or you can restore the outside to the original mahogany finish. There are a few cosmetic issues: A small piece of the hand-carved detail is missing on the top of the right door. Also one piece of narrow dental molding is missing from the left side of the lower panel of the right door. It's fairly simple dental molding and would be easy to recreate with 1/8" dowel and a triangular file. These defects are not very noticeable until you get close. There is also a middle cross support visible in the photos. If the top drawers are removed. This support can be a shelf to turn this armoire into an entertainment center. It would accept a TV up to 31.5" wide(about 34" to 35" diagonal) The lower drawers could house electronics and media. The measurements are 64" high. 36" wide at the top, and 23" deep. The end sections have"bombe" shape as well as front sections. Matching bookmarked burled elmwood/ walnut veneer with scroll inlay design. The 2 side doors open to 2 adjustable interior blonde wood veneer shelves. Center door opens to area where a rod would have been suspended.rod missing but could easily be replaced. Nice splayed legs and center crown design. Lots of storage possibilities. Exterior color is closer to that as shown in photos 2. 3 and 4 when more light was available. Hutches, armoires, cribs, buffets, benches and clocks made up this dark carved wooden collection with it's signature geometric designs and pierced ship's wheels. The fancy turned balusters and the flower petal shaped carvings on these pieces replicated their larger counterparts, which were produced in Brittany, France. The ornate miniature has a front door decorated with an upside down keyhole or pendulum opening, backed with a brass plate. Here we have an old Trunk or Armoire meant for travel and has a label on it with a picture of an indian head that states: Genuine National Vulcanized Trunk Fibre.
