Antique Hand Carved Oak Wood Cabinet Door Ornate Thistle Arch Pattern Victorian Description: Up for sale is this estate rescued old door. It looks to be a door off of a cabinet of some kind. It measures 24 3/4" x 17 1/2" x 2" including the knob) As you can see from the photos this cabinet is carved by hand. The carving is rough and irregular but still beautiful in its intricacy! The pattern looks like it depicts a thistle plant inside of an arched design. You can also see that there are a couple of pieces missing from the design including one of the oval shaped designs in the top left and possibly two rectangle shaped pieces at the top of the columns below the arch. The knob also looks to have been hand carved. This door still has the original hinges which are rusted in place. The back of the door looks as though it had 2 cross ... morepieces which have been removed. The door does have some cracks developing in the bottom as you can see in the photos. The door is made of solid pine and has 4 raised panels. Hardware: The door is not equipped with any hardware. However. Condition: The door does not have a lock housing or any hinge mortises. On the exterior side of the door. There is a chip on the top-edge of the hinge stile, there is a crack and chip on the bottom of the hinge stile; a strip of wood is loose on the bottom of the lock stile. On the interior side of the door. There is a chip on the top ... moreof the lock stile, a chip on the bottom rail, and another on the bottom of the hinge stile; there is a crack on the top of the hinge stile; and there is a scratch on the bottom of the lock stile. The door has a solid, pine core covered with 1/16" thick, birch veneers. Also, please don't think that"veneer" means inferior quality. Unlike the paper-thin veneers used on modern doors and furniture. These veneers are almost 1/16" thick and provide strength and stability to the door. Also note that chestnut is a rare and valuable wood; it’s not commercially available due to the blight introduced between 1900& 1908. Which made the North American chestnut trees virtually extinct by 1940. The door is finished on both sides. But there are spots and patches of paint ... morehere and there. There are 5, horizontal, recessed panels on both sides of the door. Hardware:  The door is not equipped with any hardware. However. W e  have a good selection of period hardware in our eBay store. I have had this old. Vintage black forest wood cuckoo clock for a good number of years. I had visions of taking this in to the local clock'guy' But I just never got around to it. When the weights are attached and the clock is hung on the wall, the clock ticks. Winds and runs for several hours until the weights run down. The cuckoo and little man behind both doors do not work. There is some sort of music box inside the clock. It would be really nice for someone to get this working again or maybe just use it for parts. It measures 13" high from the top of the wooden cuckoo to the bottom leaf. Measurements don't include chain. Pendulum, etc, just the length of the clock itself. And have been treasured by several owners.  Small splits, scrapes and cracks are a normal part of their patina attesting to their age and extensive use. We examine each piece carefully when we receive it and report any damage we find in our listings. Please look carefully at the pictures which may also reveal condition and damage. Damage/Repair, worn patina. Cracks, Bamana wood Door Lock. Mali, African. Additional Information: A wooden door lock attributed to the Bamana. This example has some age and ... morethe surface shows the piece was extensively used. Bamana door locks are composed of two parts: one is a fixed vertical element which is most often carved with abstract. Human or animal form fixed to the door with iron staples. The second part of the door lock is a horizontal wooden piece that slides through the vertical piece where iron teeth would fall into small holes locking the door. The doors had pointed corners that served as hinges and a sculpted wooden lock to keep it closed. A small key would lift the iron pegs to open the door. The sliding locking bar passed just behind the vertical part. The face on this door lock is carved in a Bamana style and recalls Bamana figures identified as representations of an ancestor, which presence is required to ensure protection and prevent the intrusion of bad spirits and sorcerers.
