Antique Purple Lightning Rod Ball with one original "COLE BROS" cap.
This is an antique purple lightning rod ball that measures 5" from top to bottom of collars. This comes with the one original COLE BROS screw on cap with patent date of Dec. 12-1893 for the threaded collar. There are a few bubbles in glass that is natural for this age. Also. As you can see in the photos there are minor chips on the rims of caps. Collar screw areas are in very good shape. I believe this is a reproduction lightning rod ball since the glass is considerably heavier than old glass Shinn Systems I've had. Minor mold flaw and some like chips on the collars. Vintage Antique 68" Copper Lightning Rod with Blue W.C. Shinn Milk Glass Ball
This is a beautiful old copper lightning rod with metal stand and blue milk glass W.C. Shinn Mfg. Co. ball. The copper has a fantastic green patina and the stand has some surface rust. But it is still sturdy and functional. There are holes in the ends of the stand legs for attaching the stand to the roof or other structure. The glass ball is a bold robin's egg blue with the words W.C. Shinn Mfg. Co. wrapped around the middle. There are some tiny chips missing from the top rim and two larger chips missing from the bottom as shown in the 4th, 7th, and last photo. The ball still sits nicely on the metal disk, and there are no cracks in the glass anywhere. The white disk you can see under the ball on the photos is a thin foam disk that is there to protect the bottom rim of the ball, but it is not necessary and can be slipped right off. I ... morewill remove the stand and ship that part along with the ball in a separate box from the lightning rod to protect the ball from breakage and lower shipping cost. Roof Glass was used to highlight the peaks or crowns of Old Victorian houses. It was made to sit in a channel along the peak to go along with and enhance the weathervanes also used. Roof glass was sometimes used with the Burgoon Lightning rod ball system. It is embossed with: Pat. Antique/ Vintage Electra 53" Lightning Rod- The rod is copper and has a nice green patina. There is a 4-legged braided/twisted metal base to mount on to roof. Globe is amber/gold colored and has a 1-1/2" crack in the bottom. Weathervane arrow is another metal- maybe aluminum? There is a nice star burst on top of the arrow finial at the top. Vintage swirled steel lightning rod with mounted metal Eagle and Amethyst glass ball. Includes stand. Stand seems to be cast iron painted gold with(2) copper brackets holding(2) porcelain insulators. We believe the"spear" shaped topper to be copper as it has turned the classic"green" patina with age. Swirled rod measures 43" and approx 50" total length when mounted in stand. Bottom of rod will need a cable bracket installed for use. Perfect as is for decorative purposes. All metal in good vintage condition with just age/weather related wear. The Amethyst glass ball is approx 5 1/4" and does have a crack in it(see pics) Both ends on the ball are rough and chipped. But do have metal protective covers. Up for sale is a beautiful Rare Hawkeye Dark Ruby Red Lightning Rod Ball. It does have a 3/4" thick chip on the bottom collar(See picture#3) Which can be unnoticeable with the collar ring. There is also a hairline crack running from the chip up through the'W' on'Hawkeye' and continues through the middle of one of the stars. This would not photograph because of the deep red color of the glass. Do not let the damage detour you, it is still a very lovely hard to find piece.

found this at an old farm auction. very nice piece. milk ball is about 5" cow is about 9" long and about 6" tall over all 16" from bottom to tip and almost 20" wide. found one like it on ebay and it said it was a New Jersey. Farm fresh, antique 1890's weathervane but I am not an expert so please see pics and judge for yourself. Old Rare Original MUNSON Lightning Rod Weathervane & Glass Ball Farm Hardware
Here we have for sale an old original glass lightning rod ball. You are buying the ball on the left only. These are very rare Munson Lightning Rod Co. glass balls. The right ball is complete. With glass threaded tube and zinc threaded caps. The ball on the left is the same but doesn't have the tube or the caps. You can see in the pictures, the stained circle areas where the caps sat. These type balls have extra wide collar openings and little or no collars. This is intentional in manufacturing. The skirted cap screws down over the tube and rides against the shoulder of the ball. This type of glass ball was patented by Alvin J. Munson in 1887. Original zinc caps carry the name and patent date. These are rare balls and you don't find any parts much less complete balls much anymore. This ball was found here in South Central Ky. this ... morepast Thursday. It is 110% original, untouched, as found on a roof. No damage at all. All the staining is as mother nature put it. There was no caps or tube present. This is a rare piece and you won't be disappointed.

It looks like something from out of this world by its shape and design. This old lightning rod ball is in near mint condition. With the slight exception of an area where there is a glaze chip on the top, that looks to have been done in the manufacturing process(see pictures to determine) This lightning rod ball looks like it was well taken care of from the elements, as there are no scratches, chips or hairlines. It was totally covered in black soot when recovered, and an overnight soak in oxalic acid did the trick. This example was found in the southwestern area of Pennsylvania in farm ... morecountry. These were used on the old 1/2 inch twisted copper wire rods as both the openings are barely 3/4" wide at both ends. This ball measures 4 1/4" tall, and is 4" in diameter. It is quite heavy for its size. Interesting with the fancy stepped designs at either end, with the flat side in the center. Please see all the pictures as they tell the full story.
