I purchased this beautiful fireplace cover from a Virginia estate. This cast iron fireplace cover is unusually heavy weighing approximately 55 pounds. Both pieces have been have painted by the former owner; there are some chips in the paint. The cast iron is approximately 1/8” thick. The surround weighs 23 pounds. The dimensions of the surround are approximately 30 ½” wide and 30 ½” tall. There are two small cracks on the inner opening. Also. The lower left bracket is broken off and the top of surround has been sawed off to fit the metal to an existing fireplace(see pictures) The summer cover/insert weighs 22 pounds. c1900 mottled VICTORIAN TILE ~enough for fireplace surround; hearth~100available
The sale is for 1 of these great looking antique tiles surround that were made by the Trent Tile company of New Jersey in the late 1800's. They measure 6 x 1.5" I have the 3 x 1.5 inch tiles in this so very few or none of the mottled tiles should need to be cut for the surround with the traditional staggered design. The most common surround would be 30" high and across( or fifteen 6 inch squares) This comes out to be 60 tiles since 4 of these make a 6" square. It measures 31" Tall x 24-3/4" Wide The bottom center panel is bronze on tin.all the remaining pieces are cast iron. This will have to be disassembled for shipment! We arent sure of the purpose of the piece of wood on the back.whether that was something the former estate owner had for his fireplace.we do not know. The heir to the estate said he and his wife never used that fireplace in the bedroom; therefore perhaps he was proping it up or something. Nevertheless. This signed fire surround and summer screen is a piece of New York City history. On the bottom left side is inscribed: W& N H Jackson New York. On the bottom right is inscribed: Patent Jan 7 1846 238 Front St. The company began in 1827 as W N Jackson& Co. grate makers. At 238 Front St, it was the first company of its kind in NYC. The grates at this time were made of wrought iron, by hand. This means of heating gradually took the place of the wood stove. And was principally used for heating houses, until the introduction of the coal stove. The quality and design of their grates surpassed and replaced the European imports of the time. Used fireplace surround that was in our family room. It is 2.5 years old and custom made. It has an opening that is 60" wide x 47.5" high so it will fit around most standard fireplaces. The mantle itself is 70" wide. There are still some nails in the back where it was originally attached to the wall. And there is one spot where the wood attaches to the wall that got pushed in a little bit by a screwdriver or pry bar when it was being removed from the wall and is hardly visible. Late 1800's Iron Fireplace Surround with attached Insert and with Grate. Out of an 1800 home in Troy. NY, where the American Industrial Revolution began. This piece was created by the foundry of Wm H Jackson& Co. in NYC. and is numbered"140. The Jackson family had foundries in New York City through most of the 1800's into the early 1900's. As you can see in the pictures, the actual fire surround can be detached from the insert if you wish. All pieces have surface rust but are very solid. The rear covers are missing. Very few of these pieces exist now due to age and urban renewal destruction. A really great Americana piece ready to be admired and even brought back to its original beauty. Surround is 33" high. 31" wide and 3" deep. Surround opening is 27" high by 18" wide. Attached insert is 9" ... moredeep. Grate is 18" wide by 9" high. Total weight approx. 50 lbs. Oak veneer over pine. As found. Rescued from a barn after a house rehab project in Rehobeth Md. Somerset County. Mfg. by Steiner Mantel Co of Baltimore. See label. Likely late 1800s- find a Steiner catalog and you can probably get a better date. Slight damage to veneer in center. We believe from heat drying the veneer over the years. This can be fixed with water and glue. Left side has some damage at bottom. Easily repaired or hidden by a trim piece. Right side bottom intact. It appears very old but short of hiring a team of scientist and a carbon dating machine I have no idea really how old it is. And even they would probably be wrong. It is cast 1038 and 9 but that probably has more to do with the mold than anything else. You can see that one tab is broken off in the photos but I don't believe that effects its functionality. I put the dimensions in the 2nd photo since there were so many of them. The handles appear to have come off along the way and those that are not it now do not appear to be original. Gorgeous ANTIQUE Fireplace Fender / Surround - Circa 19th Century - Bronze/Brass
This is a wonderful antique FIREPLACE FENDER with unique features. On each side of the fender is a circular. Concaved and relief plate depicting the face of a woman. We believe this to be a 19th century creation and possibly older. Amazing details with ball finials and an intricately carved base. The scroll work throughout is beautiful. A lot of skill and effort clearly went into making this piece. This fender came from the Minor Hill estate in McLean. Virginia. If you google Minor Hill, you will see that this is an 18th century house owned by George Minor, Sr and Jr in the early days. This is also the house where Dolley Madison is believed to have hid during her flight to and from Washington, DC during the War of 1812. There was a recent estate sale at this location where everything had to go in preparation for its upcoming sale. The second ... moreto last photo is how the fireplace fender was found at the sale. We have cleaned it up using soap and water. The last photo is of the historic house itself. Excerpt from an online site: This house may have been where Dolley Madison stayed for two nights before returning to Washington. Located at the intersection of Virginia Avenue and North Nottingham Street in McLean, Virginia, the original house was reportedly constructed of logs as early as 1730. In 1770, George Minor, Sr. purchased the property and added a wing to the existing house. George Minor and his first wife, Ann, had seven children. The eldest, George Minor, Jr. inherited the house and occupied it during the War of 1812. George Jr. served as Lieutenant Colonel of the Virginia Militia 60th Regiment and was called to the defense of the capital; however, administrative delays prevented him from reaching Bladensburg in time for the battle. During the Civil War, the high ground south of the house hosted a Union Army encampment, complete with an observation tower. The house still stands, now surrounded by later suburban development. Tile for Fireplace Surround, Great Value
You are bidding on a large quantity of decorative time that would be ideally used for a fireplace surround. We acquired this for a client some time ago who then fell in love with a cast iron fireplace we had and changed directions. This is new tile that has a nice pattern that is consistent with a Victorian era. You will be buying 23 4x4 tiles that would be great for the top field and 80 2x6 tiles that would be great to make up the sides. As you can see in the photos I laid them out as you might use them in a fireplace and you will need to cut some tiles in half. So there is a great deal of flexibility here. This was laid out as a 40 x 40 surround and there were tiles left over. You could go wider and taller depending on your design. This tile is called Venice and has a model# 32020 and it is a made in USA tile. I think this tile is now out ... moreof production) If you do your research you will find individuals selling the 4x4 tiles individually for up to 7.00 each. These tiles would retail between 450-500 at a tile store. If you could find them. Vintage Claycraft Batchelder Tile Fireplace Surround Arts Crafts Stickley Era
Here's an incredible find. This Arts and Crafts Stickley Era fireplace surround was salvaged from a local bungalow"remodel"which unfortunately means they are removing anything original) It's mostly intact. There are some tiles missing from the interior firebox area but I have three of them; the other three are missing. Since these are way up under there. Replacement tiles would easily blend in. There is a bit of damage as shown to the center tile above the firebox and someone also drilled holes in two areas, which could be easily patched. Otherwise. The tiles are in good shape. Some staining I believe but they are still very striking. The center tile was identified by an LA vintage tile store as being Claycraft. It measures 12" by 8" A tile this size alone is probably worth $1200-1500. The field tiles that are ... moreloose are not marked. I haven't been able to id them. If you have an idea. Let me know. They are similar to Batchelder in effect. The surround is attached to its original wooden framing and lath. It was originally used as a surround for a gas unit. That it why it was removed in one piece and not attached to brick. The nice part is that it's all in one piece with original grout. This could be reinstalled for use with a more modern"zero clearance" fireplace or simply used as a decorative centerpiece. The tiles would have to be removed and cleaned to use with an existing brick fireplace. Measures 56" wide by 48 1/4" tall. The firebox area is about 2 feet by 2 feet. Need other measures? This deep pair of victorian/Art Deco cast iron fireplace insert surrounds is from the late 1800s or early 1900s. Naturally. They could be used again as fireplace inserts; however, with a little imagination and seeing our photographs you might be able to utilize these as the legs for a table with 2 x 8s supporting the sides. Antique Victorian walnut fireplace mantel and surround
Offered for auction is this very nice solid walnut Victorian fireplace surround and mantle. Has been professionally refinished and is a nice rich. Dark walnut. Just under the mantle top are round carved recesses, recessed square plaques with circular and cross hatch design, and also parallel carved lines in the legs. 62 1/8" wide at the top, 13" deep, 49 1/2" t, opening is 36" w and 31 5/8" tall. Last picture shows hardware that is used to secure the mantlepiece flat to the wall. Super piece to put around your fireplace box or just place on wall and add some brass items like in the pictures.
